Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

In the past five years, the number of santri continuing their studies at universities has increased, both in terms of quantity and quality. As university students, santri exhibit distinct psychological characteristics, particularly in terms of spirituality and Personal Growth Initiative (PGI), which are believed to influence their academic performance. However, there is limited research that simultaneously examines the role of spirituality and PGI on the academic performance of santri students. This study aims to investigate the impact of spirituality and PGI on the academic performance of santri students using a quantitative approach and multiple linear regression analysis. The sample consisted of 173 active students who were either current santri or alumni of Islamic boarding schools, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using three instruments: the Personal Growth Initiative Scale-II (PGI-II), the Academic Performance Scale, and the Intrinsic Spirituality Scale. The results show that both spirituality and PGI have a positive impact on academic performance, with a contribution of 28.5%. These findings emphasize the importance of spirituality and PGI in shaping the academic dynamics of santri students in higher education.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to construct a conceptual model of spiritual happiness (sa'ādah) and analyze the mechanisms for achieving it from the perspective of Imam Al-Ghazali's Sufism. Using qualitative research methods with a content analysis approach, data was collected through purposive selection of key texts in Ihya Ulumuddin that were selected thematically and interpreted using Carol D. Ryff's psychological well-being framework. The Psychological Well-Being (PWB) model emphasizes eudaimonic dimensions, such as self-acceptance, life purpose, and self-development, as its foundation. The results of the study reveal that Al-Ghazali formulated a psychotherapeutic mechanism in which the internalization of the qualities of qanaah (self-satisfaction) and tawadlu (humility) function as interventions to reduce distress caused by greed and ujub, which ultimately leads individuals to a state of ma'rifat as the pinnacle of happiness. These findings have practical implications for Islamic psychology to develop Sufi-based psychotherapy, as well as for modern psychological therapy to integrate spiritual concepts in achieving inner peace. Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine the protective role of religiosity in mitigating the symptoms of quarter-life crisis among final-year university students. The transition from academic life to early adulthood often triggers emotional instability, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding future careers and identity formation. Religiosity is hypothesized to serve as a psychological buffer that fosters resilience, meaning, and self-regulation during this critical life stage. Method: A correlational quantitative approach was employed involving 112 final-year students aged 18–29 from a public Islamic university in Indonesia. Data were collected through standardized questionnaires measuring religiosity and quarter-life crisis dimensions, and analyzed using Pearson’s product–moment correlation to assess the association between variables. Findings: Results revealed a significant negative correlation between religiosity and quarter-life crisis (r = –0.212, p < 0.05). Students with higher levels of religiosity reported lower levels of emotional confusion, anxiety, and hopelessness about their future. The findings indicate that spiritual beliefs, religious practices, and internalized moral values contribute to stronger coping mechanisms when facing transitional stressors. Significance: The study underscores the importance of integrating spiritual development into higher education counseling programs to support students’ psychological well-being. By highlighting religiosity as a protective factor, this research enriches the global discourse on the interplay between faith and mental health in emerging adulthood. Future research is encouraged to explore longitudinal patterns and cross-cultural perspectives to deepen understanding of this relationship.
