Abstract

This study aims to determine the conditions that encourage the construction of radicalism in Bengkulu and how it affects the formation of communication patterns in the SS group who are considered exposed to radicalism. The theory used to understand the formation of the narrative of radicalism is the construction of social reality from Berger and Luckman. The research method uses a constructivist paradigm with a case study approach. Data collection techniques using interviews, observation, and literature review. The results of the study found that the construction of radicalism in the SS group was formed by two factors– the first was the SS group's rejection of long-standing community traditions such as tahlilan, grave pilgrimage, and yasinan; the second is the factor of the mass media showing terrorist actors who use the same symbols as the symbols worn by the SS group. The impact of the radicalism label is that the communication formed in the SS group is exclusive, while the village community applies one-way communication in understanding the SS group.

Abstract

Bengkulu Province is an area that according to a survey by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) in 2017 has the highest potential for radicalism in Indonesia. The BNPT data is quite surprising because Bengkulu province has never been recorded as a place of radicalism and terrorism. This research explores the causes of religious groups that are considered radical in Bengkulu province. The method used in this research is qualitative with a case study approach. The results of the study provide the fact that there is a growing discourse in society that creates the image of SS s as a radical group in North Bengkulu and Rejang Lebong districts. The SS label as a group that adheres to radicalism can be explained from two perspectives. First, from the internal side, this group lives exclusively and does not interact intensely with the surrounding community. This exclusive life makes the perspectives, attitudes and behavior of SS group members differ from those of society. Differences in viewpoints, attitudes and actions become the embryo for conflicts with the surrounding community, especially in terms of beliefs. Meanwhile, from the second point of view, the surrounding community has also labeled the SS group as adherents of radicalism without knowing what the meaning and limitations of radicalism itself are. The role of the mass media in reporting on radical groups with several easily recognizable symbols such as robes, veils and beards also influences people's perceptions of the SS groups around them. This condition was further strengthened by the labeling carried out by several religious and community leaders who were used as references to portray SS groups. The label and image of radicalism in the end make the SS group's relationship with the surrounding community social distancing and foster stereotypes and prejudice. Keywords: exclusivity, label, prejudice, radicalism, Bengkulu

Abstract

Indonesia is home to many indigenous peoples who can preserve the environment through their traditions amid the increasing of external values and lifestyles’ penetration. The following presents the indigenous ecological knowledge of the Serawai people in the form of the celako kemali. Based on insights from the Indigenous research methods, this study aims first to assess the persistence of the celako kemali as a method for farming practices. Second, to identify transmission patterns of the celako kemali among generations in the Serawai community. This study found that there were 19 types of celako kemali. The current analysis demonstrates that, out of the 19 celako kemali, three types have been completely abandoned, five are still in use but with minor modifications, and eleven are still valid by established standards. The first generation acquires knowledge from their parents through the internalization process within the family. This first generation still preserves and maintains the 19 celako kemali daily farming activities. The second generation acquires knowledge through internalization within the family and horizontally by sharing experiences with other farmers, but horizontal channels are more dominant. This generation knows the 19 types of the celako kemali, although they dare to modify five types without losing the essence of their body of knowledge. The third generation acquires knowledge through vertical and oblique transmission, in which the oblique channel is predominant. This third generation learns a lot from village elders unrelated to the family, teachers, and mass media. However, this generation has abandoned completely three types of the celako kemali.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of Instagram social media on the dress style of students of the University of Bengkulu. The research approach uses descriptive qualitative studies. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, participant observations, and documentation of Instagram uploads. The purposive sampling technique was used to select relevant participants, namely active students aged 18–25 years from three faculties at the University of Bengkulu (Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Business, and Faculty of Social and Political Sciences) who actively use Instagram and often post fashion-related content. Data analysis was carried out using the Miles and Huberman method, which included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn, as well as triangulation to increase the validity of the findings. In sociological analysis, rational choice theory is used to understand how students adapt fashion trends on Instagram by considering various factors such as suitability, financial ability, and social acceptance. The findings show that Instagram is the main source of inspiration for students in determining their dressing style, especially related to Korean style trends. Nonetheless, students demonstrate critical ability to select and modify these trends to suit personal preferences and socio-cultural contexts. Students develop a variety of adaptive strategies, from financial management to negotiation with environmental norms, to express a unique yet relevant fashion identity. It is hoped that this research will contribute to a broader understanding of the role of social media in shaping student identities and behaviors in the digital era.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the development of religious tourism potential at the Sultan Abdullah Grand Mosque as a leading destination in Lebong Regency. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through interviews, observations, and document studies. Informants were selected purposely, including the Head of Tourism, the Head of Social Welfare, mosque administrators, and tourists who had visited the Sultan Abdullah Grand Mosque. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's techniques and Max Weber's Theory of Rational Action. The findings reveal that the Sultan Abdullah Grand Mosque has significant potential as a leading destination due to its historical value, unique architectural design, and adequate infrastructure. Efforts by various regional institutions, such as the Regional Government, Disparpora, and daily mosque administrators, have enhanced the appeal of this tourist site. However, challenges such as limited funding and park maintenance persist. The Lebong Regency Government has also undertaken various efforts to improve mosque facilities through infrastructure upgrades and extensive promotions. It is hoped that these strategies will attract more tourists, boost the local economy, preserve cultural and religious values, and establish the Sultan Abdullah Grand Mosque as a leading destination in Lebong Regency.

Abstract

Living a healthy lifestyle is a necessity in life. Along with the increasing development of modern lifestyles, busy work causes them to often consume fast food. Limited time to cook is the reason someone prefers to consume fast food. The increasing desire of the community to start implementing a healthy lifestyle in the midst of many office or other activities, causing them not to be able to prepare their own food or drink to be consumed creates a good opportunity for food producers, especially producers who sell healty food. Manufacturers must pay attention and be able to meet consumer preferences in making choices that are sometimes very selective by understanding and responding to consumer desires in order to create products that are not only healthy but also healthy This study aims to examine the preferences of producers in processing healthy food products, later this research will help identify what factors are prioritized by producers in producing and marketing healthy food to consumers. The research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach and using purposive sampling technique. Based on the findings in the field, some producers were moved by the lack of quality healthy food choices in the area. They strive to provide truly healthy products, using low calorie and sugar ingredients to replace less healthy ingredients such as mayonnaise and condensed milk. In addition, personal backgrounds, such as a love for healthy food, are also a major motivation in producing healthy food. The high public demand for healthy food encourages manufacturers to innovate. Products such as salads, fresh juices, and protein-based foods now come in various variants to meet consumer needs.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of the internet has transformed communication, particularly through social media platforms like Instagram, where digital rhetoric plays a crucial role in shaping follower trust. This study addresses the problem of understanding how different rhetorical elements influence trust among followers of the Instagram account @malakaproject.id, particularly among young adults from Generation Z. The research aims to explore the impact of logical arguments (Logos), emotional appeals (Pathos), and credibility (Ethos) on follower trust. To achieve this, the study employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing primary data collected through questionnaires and secondary data from relevant literature. The methodology includes validity and reliability testing of the questionnaire items, with data analysis conducted using multiple linear regression, T-tests, and F-tests to assess the relationships between rhetorical elements and follower trust. The findings reveal that the content on @malakaproject.id significantly enhances followers' trust, with logical arguments (Logos) having the most substantial impact, followed by emotional appeals (Pathos) and credibility (Ethos).

Abstract

Ecological disasters have resulted in environmental damage such as the sedimentation of the Lemau river estuary and abrasion on the coast of Central Bengkulu Regency. The increasingly critical environmental conditions have encouraged the women of Pondok Kelapa Village, who are housewives, to form the Lemau River Women's Group to participate together in efforts to save the environment. This research highlights the efforts made by the Lemau River Women's Group in responding to ecological disasters and environmental damage in Pondok Kelapa II Village, Central Bengkulu Regency, Bengkulu Province. A qualitative research method with a descriptive approach was chosen to explain the efforts made by the Lemau River Women's Group in advocating for environmental protection as a response to influence public policy and save the village's coastal area. The research data were collected through non-participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and then the data analysis stage was carried out. The results showed that the efforts made by women's groups in responding to ecological disasters include: non-litigation environmental advocacy as an attempt to influence policies that are environmentally sound and gender-responsive are still being fought for by women's groups today, other initiatives are efforts to adapt and mitigate ecological disasters carried out by groups by switching jobs to find alternative sources of income or economy from the previous way of utilizing marine products, then some initiatives have been carried out by women's groups by planting mangroves which aim to be an ecosystem rehabilitation action for further response to mitigate disasters and save the village coastal area. This research concludes that environmentally conscious women have become a pressure group for public policies that are not ecologically sound and have an impact on the ecological, and socio-economic conditions of the community. Women's groups are also at the forefront of responding to ecological disasters and environmental damage through disaster adaptation and mitigation efforts.
