Abstract

This research entitled “Behavior Changes in Paulo Coelho’s Veronika Decides to Die: A Psychological Approach”. The purpose of this study is to analyze the personality of the main character presented in the novel. In addition, the aim of this research is to reveal the main character’s environments contribute to the character’s motivation to life. This novel conducted the struggle from Veronika as the main character for finding her motivation to life.This study used qualitative research; descriptive qualitative methods are used to analyze data. This study used three main concepts of social cognitive theory by Albert Bandura (1986), there are reciprocal determinism, therapy, and dysfunction behavior/depression. This study also applied the theory of social cognitive theory in the book entitled The Theory of Personality by Jess Feist as a tool to analyze the personality of the main character also the main character’s environments contribute to the character’s motivation to life in the novel Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho.In this study, the researcher found two main results. First, this study indicated personality of Veronika as the main character in the novel Veronika Decides to Die based on the social cognitive theory concept that is dysfunction behavior. Based on concept of dysfunction behavior, it shows that Veronika is an introvert person, fainthearted, and suffering from depression. Second, this study discovered the main character’s environments contribute to the character’s motivation to life based on the social cognitive concepts, they are reciprocal determinism and therapy. Based on that theoretical concept, it shows that Veronika’s environment really helps her to find her motivation to life. They are Mari, Zedka, and Edward.Keyword: Motivation to life, Dysfunction Behavior, Reciprocal Determinism and Therapy

Abstract

Sanggar Belajar (SB) yang dibina oleh Pimpinan Cabang Istimewa Muhammadiyah (PCIM) Malaysia yaitu SB Kampung Pandan dan SB Kampung Bahru memiliki beberapa permasalahan terkait pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia. Pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia dinilai terlalu monoton yang disebabkan oleh kurangnya penggunaan media pembelajaran. Tentu saja persoalan ini dapat diupayakan pemecahan masalahnya salah satunya dengan pemberian pengayaan bagi siswa dan pelatihan bagi pengajar di SB Kampung Pandan dan SB Kampung Bahru Malaysia agar dapat mengoptimalkan pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia. Kedua kegiatan tersebut bertujuan untuk mengoptimalkan pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia bagi anak-anak Indonesia yang ada di Malaysia. Pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia dengan memanfaatkan sastra anak yang dikemas dalam bentuk video animasi terbukti mampu membuat pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia menjadi menyenangkan dan tidak monoton. Di samping itu, siswa memiliki pengalaman belajar berbeda dari biasanya dan lebih mudah mengenal serta mengingat kosa kata bahasa Indonesia yang baru mereka pelajari. Para pengajar di kedua sanggar belajar tersebut sangat mengharapkan diadakan kembali kegiatan pelatihan sejenis untuk menambah pengetahuan baru dan mengasah kreatifitas mereka dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar.

Abstract

Within the Mandailing community in Rokan Hulu, as the novelty, the research investigated the diverse viewpoints on nicknames that had developed throughout three generations (older people, millennials, and Generation Z), with a specific emphasis on the links between nicknames and bullying. These nicknames, which could be affectionate or insulting, could fuel or stop bullying. The researchers conducted an interview and a survey at Rokan Hulu, a suburban region in Sumatra, to gather qualitative data for the research. A survey was distributed to 40 individuals in Rokan Hulu. It is evident from the findings that attitudes have changed over time. Many individuals from older generations view nicknames as a form of endearment due to their perceived innocence and strong cultural heritage roots. On the other hand, younger generations, notably millennials and Generation Z, are becoming more aware of the potentially harmful effects that certain nicknames can have, particularly in connection with bullying and inclusion in social groups. People interpret and use language in a way that mirrors the broader societal and cultural changes occurring. By re-evaluating how different generations perceive nicknames, the research contributes significantly to a more in-depth comprehension of how shifting cultural norms influence linguistic practices and the social repercussions of those practices, particularly in the context of bullying.

Abstract

This research entitled Child Abuse Experienced By The Main Character In Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor And Park: A Psychosocial Analysis. Eleanor and Park was a coming-of-age novel written by Rainbow Rowell. Eleanor, one of the main characters, had a lot of things going on in her life, she lived in poverty and had to deal with child abuse everyday. This research was aimed to identify what kind of abuse Eleanor experienced and to analyze how the abuse affected Eleanor’s psychosocial development. This research was classified into a qualitative research. The data were taken from the novel Eleanor and Park written by Rainbow Rowell. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied four out of eight stages of psychosocial development theory by Erik H. Erikson while trying to classify different types of abuse that Eleanor experienced. The data were in descriptive form which was why the analysis is enlighten by the researcher in descriptive way. The result of this research showed that Eleanor had troubles passing psychosocial development stages due to what she had been through in her home life. She might succeed in Early Childhood stage but since living with her step-father, Richie, and receiving many types of child abuse from him such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse and child neglect, she failed to pass three later the stages. In consequence, she grew many unhealthy personalities and getting more distant with people in society. Nonetheless, ever since she met Park, she changed to be a better person, although it took her some time. The story ended without the researcher knowing if she passes the adolescence stage successfully. Therefore, there was still possibility for her to pass later stages well and be a healthy individual.

Abstract

Many authors use the theme of human rights in literature to highlight and address social issues. Similarly, Leila S. Chudori explores human rights violations in her novels Pulang (2012), Laut Bercerita (2017), and Namaku Alam (2023). This study analyzes the depiction of human rights abuses in these works as reflections of social realities during Indonesia's New Order era, employing new historicism theory. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through reading, recording, and literature review. To ensure validity, semantic checks were applied, while reliability was confirmed through intrarater and interrater methods. Data analysis combined archaeological method and thick description techniques. The findings reveal that Chudori's novels effectively depict various human rights violations experienced during the New Order period,  such as political imprisonment, enforced disappearances, censorship, or state violence to give readers a clearer understanding of the study's scope offering critical insight into the era's social and political context. This study contributes by illuminating how Indonesian literary narratives reinterpret New Order history, thereby bridging historical memory dan cultural expression.

Abstract

The occurrence of disparities in society with female characters, Disney stories told about the existence of heroine characters in the Disney renaissance era. Disney stories had become part of a show culture that has evolved into the reproduction of gender roles. This study was conducted to find the female representation as a heroine depicted in the Disney renaissance as well as to analyze the reasons how Disney heroines struggle in claiming their equality as a woman in their society. This study was categorized into qualitative and descriptive research methods. Furthermore, this study used the theory of the renowned feminist existentialism by Simone de Beauvoir, one of the Feminist icons and Philosophers of existentialism, with her book; The Second Sex, Beauvoir represented the section of the independent woman; a woman could choose independence, which means continuing to carry out the process toward freedom without having the insight of a predetermined goal. Therefore, this study aimed to elaborate how the female representation as the women to fight their equality to their desire for freedom. Thus, the heroine character was expected to be able to contribute to society in terms of gender awareness, including women.

Abstract

Literary works offer an in-depth and subjective perspective on a historical event. Historical events that may not be fully documented can be revived through literary works. This research aims to find a reflection of the history of the New Order using the Newhistoricism approach formulated by Greenblatt (1980) in Leila S. Chudori's latest work entitled Namaku Alam. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research using content analysis techniques. Based on the nature of the new historicism approach, data collection was carried out using a parallel reading method between literary and non-literary texts. Data analysis techniques were carried out using archaeological methods and in-depth description methods. The results of the research prove that the historical events of the New Order that were discovered included the arrest of people who were related to the PKI along with the negative stigma received by political prisoners and their descendants; personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness policies; supervision of people's reading; and petition 50.

Abstract

The present study analyses family and support systems in addressing religious discrimination, focusing specifically on Islamophobic incidents portrayed in Ibtihaj Muhammad's children's picture book The Proudest Blue. Using Kimberlé Crenshaw's intersectionality theory and Talcott Parsons' functionalism, this research examines how religious discrimination manifests in educational settings and how various environmental support mechanisms respond to these challenges. Through the application of a qualitative research method, focusing on textual and visual elements, the study identifies specific instances of Islamophobic behavior, cultural misunderstanding, and social othering. In addition, it explores strategies employed by families in the face of challenges, peer relationships within these communities, and the responses of the community at large. The findings reveal that Asiya experiences religious discrimination rather than generalized racism, with incidents specifically targeting Islamic practices through the degradation of religious symbols. The analysis demonstrates that successful social integration occurs through adaptive processes that allow Muslim students to participate fully in educational communities while maintaining their faith practices. This study contributes to the understanding of the potential of children's literature to shed light on the challenges posed by religious discrimination, as well as the intricate nature of supportive environments within educational settings.

Abstract

This research entitled “Consumerism of Leisure Class in Singapore in Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians: A Sociological Approach”. The purpose of this study is to analyze the leisure class reflected in Singapore in the novel Crazy Rich Asians. In addition, the aim of this research is to reveal the consumerism of leisure class in Crazy Rich Asians. This novel contains the aspect about the style of consumer in Singapore.The research uses qualitative method to analyze the data. This study uses the mimetic approach by M.H. Abrams and two main concepts of theory of leisure class by Thorstein Veblen, these are conspicuous leisure and conspicuous consumption. The research applies the data of Singaporeans leisure class in the book Understanding Singaporeans: Values, Lifestyle, Aspirations and Consumption Behaviours by Keng et al. This study also applies the concept of uniquely Singaporean mindset in the book entitled The Cult of the Luxury Brand: Inside Asia’s Love affair with Luxury by Chadha and Paul as a tool to analyze the consumerism of leisure class in the novel Crazy Rich Asians. In this study, the researcher finds two main results. First, this study indicates conspicuous leisure as a signal of leisure class in Crazy Rich Asians based on seven leisure activities of Singaporean. They are sports, social, self-improvement, various charity, travel, home, and other activities. Second, the study discovers the consumerism of leisure class in Crazy Rich Asians and uniquely Singaporean mindset as a main result of leisure class’ consumerism in Singapore reflected in Crazy Rich Asians.

Abstract

Dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, isu perundungan (bullying) di kalangan anak-anak dan remaja telah menjadi perhatian serius di banyak negara. Mahasiswa sebagai agen perubahan dapat terlibatan aktif dalam berbagai gerakan dan aksi kritis terhadap masalah perundungan (bullying). Peran aktif mahasiswa ini dapat dilakukan dengan cara menyampaikan gagasan atau cerita secara singkat, padat, interaktif, dan menyenangkan melalui comic strip tentang dampak negatif dari perilaku perundungan (bulliying). Solusi dari permasalahan tersebut adalah dengan mengadakan program pengabdian berupa pelatihan pembuatan comic strip bagi mahasiswa UAD dan IIUM Malaysia.  Dalam pembuatan Comic strip mahasiswa dapat memanfaatkan sastra anak sebagai kontennya. Pertimbangan dipilihnya pelatihan pembuatan comic strip karena comic strip memiliki tampilan visual yang menarik sehingga pesan dapat lebih mudah dipahami. Kegiatan ini dilakukan dalam beberapa tahap, yakni tahap persiapan, tahap pelaksanaan, tahap evaluasi, dan tahap sosialisasi. Secara keseluruhan, pelatihan pembuatan comic strip ini berhasil mencapai tujuannya dalam meningkatkan keterampilan peserta. Keberhasilan pelatihan ini juga menunjukkan pentingnya kolaborasi lintas negara dalam pengembangan program pendidikan yang tidak hanya bermanfaat bagi peserta secara individu, tetapi juga berkontribusi pada penguatan hubungan antarbudaya dan pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang isu-isu sosial yang dihadapi oleh generasi muda di kedua negara.
