Abstract

Abstract

The objective of this study was to test the strategy of the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) in improving students' reading comprehension in the second grade of junior high school. This study used a quantitative method in the form of quasi-experimental, with a nonequivalent control group design. With the number of population was 266, the researcher took 30 samples for control and 30 samples for experiment class. The result of this study found that the value of t-test 8.233 is higher than t-table 1.699. So, the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. The calculation showed that usage Directed Reading Thinking Activity successful in improving students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss what has made an English Coursebook and outline the positive and negative consequences of globalisation on English Language Teaching (ELT). This study adopts the framework of globalisation context proposed by Block and Cameron. The data in this study cover all the coursebook content that show positives and negatives consequences, with total 13 examples in 116 pages. The findings show that there are several beneficial impacts of using this coursebook as it succeeds in covering the local culture. This study shows 10 examples that cover positive consequences in this coursebook. However, this coursebook also has several negative consequences. It lacks integration with international culture, of which it contains only two examples. However, the positive outweighs the drawbacks.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of bilingual teaching on improving mathematics learning outcomes in fourth-grade students of SD Negeri 24 Sorong City, especially on addition. The research method applied was a one-group pretest-posttest design with a quantitative approach. A total of 31 students took the pretest, were then given treatment in the form of bilingual teaching (using Indonesian and English), and finally underwent a posttest with the same questions. The analysis results showed that the average score of students' pretest was 74.84, increasing to 92.26 in the posttest. Descriptive statistical tests and Paired Sample t-Test confirmed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results (Sig. 2-tailed = 0.003). In addition to improving students' understanding of mathematics, the bilingual method also increased their engagement in the learning process, as seen from their active participation and enthusiasm during the session. Thus, bilingual learning has proven effective in supporting mathematical understanding while developing students' English skills. Based on these findings, the study recommends the implementation of innovative learning methods, such as bilingual education, to improve students' academic scores.

Abstract

Problem-solving ability is a crucial competence in mathematics learning, particularly for topics such as exponents and logarithms that are often perceived as abstract and difficult. Limited use of interactive learning media and insufficient opportunities for exploration commonly cause students to struggle in understanding and applying these concepts. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of an interactive flipbook based on discovery learning in improving students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities. A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed involving 28 tenth-grade students. The instruments included observation sheets of learning activities, a student response questionnaire, and learning achievement tests consisting of a pretest and posttest. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including N-gain analysis. The findings indicate that students’ learning activities improved across meetings, and their responses toward the flipbook and the learning model were positive, with an average score of 3.03. The mean pretest score increased from 19.29 to 67.14 on the posttest, with an N-gain of 0.60 categorized as moderate. Improvements were also observed across problem-solving indicators, particularly in modeling, strategy selection, and concept application. Overall, the interactive flipbook based on discovery learning proved effective in enhancing conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills, making it a valuable digital resource for mathematics instruction. This study contributes empirical evidence on how discovery learning–based interactive flipbooks selectively enhance different indicators of mathematical problem-solving ability, highlighting their stronger impact on problem representation and strategy formulation compared to interpretation and real-world application.
