Abstract

Online counseling refers to the provision of therapeutic helping services which manipulated the electronic communication technology between a professional counselor with his or her clients via devices such as telephone, e-mail, and other social media platforms. One of the services that is getting more attention right now in Malaysia is the tele-counseling which refers to the provision of counseling service via telephone. However, since the policy on its’ provision is still inexistence, this new trend of providing counseling service is still not being accepted by the conventional practitioners, who are still believed in the face-to-face communication in order to establish an effective counseling relationship.  The objective of this concept paper is to explore views of local counseling experts on the feasibility of tele-counseling provision. The thematic analysis from research data revealed three main themes namely, (i) acceptence towards tele-counseling; (ii) advantages of tele-counseling; and (iii) limitations of tele-counseling. The result of this initial study pointed out that tele-counseling can be considered as an alternative provision for the future.   However, in Malaysia, more guiding policies and directives need to be developed so that the delivery of this services in the future will not violate the ethics of the profession which in turn will jeopardize the professionalism of the field.

Abstract

The new challenges of the education process at all levels currently vary in different dimensions and perspectives.  One of them is to inculcate the critical and creative thinking ability among the students, specifically for students in the Y, Z, and Alpha generations.  Many researchers and scholars indicate that since the beginning of the 21st century and the possession of unique characteristics among the millennial generations, the future education system must be also revolutionized so that it will always be relevant and effective in holistically developing the future generation of a particular nation.  One of the ways to do this is by engaging critical and creative thinking activities in the daily teaching and learning process at schools and higher learning institutions.  This concept paper discusses the need for such engagement from a Malaysian perspective.

Abstract

The integration of expertise in counseling with a deep comprehension of contemporary technology is essential. Developing a sustained method is crucial for creating a practical framework to address the psychological ramifications associated with the escalating complexities of global challenges. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the use and challenges of online counseling (e-counseling) for global issues using the systematic literature review (SLR) method. The search was carried out in the Scopus database to obtain 637 documents after limitations in the year of publication, starting in 2020–2023. Another limitation was the use of the English language, and after quality assessment, a 25-article document analysis was conducted. The results showed that e-counseling was critical in addressing challenges and impacted many individuals in different regions. According to NVivo analysis, the practical implementation of online counseling (e-counseling) encountered several challenges, such as using potentially vulnerable technology, constraints within interpersonal relationships, and incorporating different methods.

Abstract

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health issues that is commonly experienced by children and adolescents as a result of traumatic events such as natural disasters, social conflicts, and violence. The high prevalence of PTSD among children and adolescents requires further intervention due to the risk of long-term psychological impacts. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Sand Tray Therapy in reducing PTSD symptoms and improving well-being in children and adolescents. The study uses an A-B-A-B experimental design, which is a variation of the single subject design (SSD), involving five subjects who were selected through a screening process and considered as representative of a population with PTSD and low psychological well-being. The research instruments used are the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-5) and Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scales (PWB). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test to compare PTSD and well-being scores between phases, and Cohen's d was used to measure the effect size of changes between phases. The results of this study indicate that sand tray therapy has a clinically significant positive effect in reducing PTSD symptoms and improving psychological well-being. Thus, this method can be considered an alternative psychological intervention for children and adolescents who suffer from PTSD and require an improvement in psychological well-being.
