Abstract

Background: The existence of Higher Education has three main tasks, namely carrying out education and teaching, research, and community service. These three things constitute the Tridharma of Higher Education. In Indonesia, breast cancer is the second most common cancer suffered by women after oral/cervical cancer. Breast cancer generally attacks women who are over 40 years old. However, young women can get this cancer. To find early symptoms of breast cancer can be detected early by women themselves. Women can routinely perform the Breast Self-Examination (BSE) method by massaging and feeling around their breasts to find out whether or not there are lumps around the breasts. BSE is an effective way to detect breast cancer as early as possible. Objective: Carry out community service by conducting activities to teach breast self-examination (BSE) to young women. Method: This community service activity consists of counseling related to information on early detection of breast cancer and followed by a demonstration of breast self-examination (BSE) using the Breast Phantom tool. Result: Counseling and early detection of breast cancer was attended by 45 students of Madrasah Aliyah. Most students do not know about early detection of breast cancer and how to check BSE. After being given information about BSE, adolescents felt satisfied and committed to be able to carry out early detection of breast cancer. Conclusion: Community service activities have been carried out regarding information on early detection of breast cancer in young women.

Abstract

Garut Regency in 2021, women who experienced vaginal discharge were 318,976 or 29.73%. The high number of cases of vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age and the frequent occurrence of less serious treatment when vaginal discharge occurs are of particular concern among women. One way that can be done to treat vaginal discharge is to use a decoction of soursop leaves because they contain antiseptic substances that can kill germs, namely phenol, which has antiseptic properties 5 times more effective than ordinary phenol. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of soursop leaf decoction (Annona muricata L) on vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age in the Karangmulya Health Center Working Area, Garut Regency. Methodology: This study used a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test with control design. The population in the study were all those who experienced leucorrhea with a score of >5 or 50 people. The sample in the study used total sampling which was divided into two groups, 25 respondents in the experimental group and 25 respondents in the control group. The instruments used were observation sheets and technical instructions about the use of soursop leaf decoction. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney tests. Results: The average score of vaginal discharge in the experimental group before the intervention was 10.32 and after the intervention was 6.84, while the average score in the control group in the first measurement was 10.36 and in the second measurement was 9.04. The bivariate results showed a p-value in the experimental group of 0.000, a p-value in the control group of 0.000 and a p-value comparison of the experimental and control groups of 0.000. Conclusion: Soursop leaf decoction has been proven effective in treating vaginal discharge in women of childbearing age, so there is a difference in vaginal discharge experienced by women of childbearing age after being given soursop leaf decoction between the experimental and control groups. Suggestion: It is hoped that women of childbearing age can handle or treat vaginal discharge independently by using soursop leaf decoction.

Abstract

Pre-marital sexual behavior among adolescents is still a concern in most of the countries, including Indonesia. The condition would be worse due to the discontinuation of the study, pre-marital pregnancy, and risk of sexually transmitted diseases. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of pre-marital sexual intercourse and factors associated among adolescents of school age in Kendal, Indonesia. This cross-sectional study employed 176 in grade XI from 9 classes in Senior High School 4 Bima, aged 15 to 18 years old in Bima City, Indonesia. The sample was selected by proportionate stratified random sampling. The dependent variable is pre-marital sex and the independent variables are knowledge, self-control, relationship status, role of teacher, and role of health worker. The data analysis was done using univariate (frequency and percentage) and bivariate analysis (Chi-square and simple logistic regression) using SPSS software. The result found prevalence of adolescents who were at risk of having sexual intercourse was 26.1%. The factors significantly associated with pre-marital sex are not having self-control (COR 8.5) and being in a relationship (COR 5.0). However, other variables including knowledge, the role of the teacher, and the role of health workers did not find significant association with pre-marital sex. Future studies can add more potential predictors to the study including the level of household, school, and community. The government needs to add the issue of pre-marital sex as well as the tendency to discontinue the study if pre-marital pregnancy occurs. Self-control can be strengthened by involving religious activity in school. Some recommendations for school-based sexual education programs, youth counseling services, or community interventions for the target population could work more to prevent pre-marital sexual intercourse among adolescents of school age.

Abstract

The South Ogan Komering Ulu District Health Office noted an increase in cholesterol sufferers in 2020 of 743 people; in 2021, there were 870 people, and in 2022, there were 922 people. High cholesterol cases are caused by several risk factors, such as lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption. Garlic can be chosen as an alternative to lower blood cholesterol levels. Garlic contains allin which can increase HDL synthesis and slow down the endogenous synthesis of cholesterol. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the consumption of garlic (Allium sativum L) on cholesterol levels in female adolescents. This research uses a quasi-experiment with- a one-group Pretest-Posttest design. The population is a teenage daughter with moderate cholesterol (> 200 mg/dl to 239 mg/dl) of 30 adolescents in July 2023. Samples researcher using total sampling where teenagers will be given garlic capsules at a dose of 2x500 mg per day for 14 days. The instruments used were garlic capsules, sheets of observation, and technical instructions for checking cholesterol levels. A data analysis using the Paired Samples Test. The average cholesterol level of female adolescents before being given garlic was 219.53, while after being given garlic, it was 194.27. Bivariate results show a p-value of 0.00 0 < 0.05. There is an influence of the consumption of garlic (Allium sativum L) on cholesterol levels of young women in Tanjung Menang Ilir Village, South Ogan Komering Ulu District, South Sumatra in 2023. It is hoped that adolescents will be able to use garlic as an herbal remedy for cholesterol-lowering therapy so that it can be controlled and stable within normal limits.

Abstract

The prevalence of growth and developmental disorders among toddlers remains high, reaching 28.7%, and children experiencing early growth delays are at increased risk of developing non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disorders later in life. Developmental delays that occur before age 20 may persist and affect long-term health outcomes. This study aimed to examine the impact of infant massage on growth, development, and mother–infant interaction among infants aged 6–12 months. A pre-experimental study with a pretest–posttest control group design was conducted. A total of 40 infants aged 6–11 months were recruited using total sampling and allocated into an intervention group (n = 20) and a control group (n = 20). Study instruments included the Bethlehem Mother–Infant Interaction Scale (BMIS), the Ages and Stages Questionnaire–Third Edition (ASQ-3), standardized infant massage procedures, observation sheets, weight scales, and length measurement tools. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and nonparametric inferential tests, including the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test for within-group comparisons and the Mann–Whitney U Test for between-group comparisons. The results demonstrated significant improvements in growth, developmental outcomes, and mother–infant interaction following infant massage in the intervention group. In contrast, no significant changes were observed in the control group across assessment periods. Significant differences were also identified between the intervention and control groups. In conclusion, infant massage is effective in enhancing growth, development, and mother–infant interaction among infants in Depok City. Training and educational programs on proper infant massage techniques are recommended for mothers to promote regular practice at home, strengthen emotional bonding, and support optimal infant development.
