Abstract

Abstract

Vectors in kinematics are rarely highlighted in high school. Even though vectors are the language used by physicists. This study aims to determine the validity and reliability of the test instrument developed and to explore the ability of vectors in kinematics of high school students. The method used in this research is research and development of the 4D model. The developed test instrument for vectors in kinematics is in the form of multiple choice with an arrow direction accompanied by a command to describe the vector and explain the reason for choosing the vector direction. The test instrument covers one- and two-dimensional kinematics topics by highlighting the concepts of velocity and acceleration. Two-dimensional kinematics is divided into constant velocity and increasing velocity. This test instrument consists of thirteen questions with an average point-biserial coefficient of 0.493 and KR-20 of 0.784. Then, this test instrument was used to measure the vector ability in kinematics of high school students with a sample size of sixty-seven students. It was found that most high school students had difficulty in acceleration as two-dimensional vector, acceleration as one-dimensional vector, and velocity as one-dimensional vector with few obstacles. Learning with the method of integrating vectors in kinematics has the possibility to solve this problem.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is exploring the student’s density conception as early as possible so that when heading to essential topics that involve density in physics (like statics and dynamics fluid), students can easily understand these essential topics. In general, students' concept understanding of density is already relatively high with 63,5%. There are differences between the conceptual understanding of male and female students, which the conceptual understanding of density in female students was better than male students. The notable difference between them is the understanding of the concepts relating mass, volume, and density. Some students also shown that they had not been able to understand the basic conception of the density and properties of matter. For further research, it is better to provide a short interview session and give students the opportunity to describe mental models of the properties of substances that students have understood.

Abstract

Maximum learning requires planning and strategies in learning. This study aims to develop a learning tool product for dynamic fluid material based on STEM-7E Learning cycle with formative assessment to improve critical thinking skills of high school students. This research uses the research and development (R&D) method by following the stages of the 4D model and carried out until the develop stage. After the product was developed, the validity of the product was tested by two validators and 32 students of SMA Brawijaya Smart School Malang for the practicality test. The overall product validity test results were 100% and the product practicality test results were 98.25%. Based on the results of the validity and practicality tests, the developed product has a very valid and very practical category.
