Abstract

Research on web-based vocabulary learning applications has gained momentum in recent years, reflecting the growing interest in technology-enhanced education across Indonesia. However, a comprehensive understanding of how these studies have evolved and contributed to the field remains limited. This systematic review aims to analyze research trends on web-based applications for vocabulary acquisition in Indonesia from 2019 to 2024, focusing on the themes, methodologies, and outcomes reported in these studies. Following the PRISMA framework, 80 studies were identified from databases such as Semantic Scholar and Garuda. After duplicate removal and relevance screening, 42 full-text articles were reviewed, with 35 meeting the final inclusion criteria. The analysis reveals an increasing focus on platforms like Duolingo, Quipper, and Memrise, with many studies employing experimental methods to assess vocabulary improvement. Key trends include the integration of gamification and multimedia elements to enhance engagement and learner motivation. The review reveals an increasing focus on web-based vocabulary learning applications in Indonesian research from 2019 to 2024, with most studies adopting experimental designs to evaluate short-term learning outcomes. The findings highlight several applications such as Duolingo, Quipper, and Memrise are frequently employed, with positive effects on vocabulary acquisition through gamification and multimedia features. However, the research predominantly focuses on small-scale implementations, with limited studies exploring long-term impacts or usage in diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the use of Educaplay, a gamified digital platform, to enhance vocabulary acquisition among EFL students at Zubdatul Asrar NU Boarding School in Parepare. Recognizing the limitations of traditional vocabulary instruction, the research explores how interactive, game-based learning can support engagement and retention. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was employed with 42 randomly selected students. Vocabulary tests were administered before and after six sessions using Educaplay activities, and a student questionnaire was used to assess learner perceptions. The results showed a significant improvement in vocabulary mastery, with mean scores increasing from 55.71 to 94.48. Questionnaire data revealed high levels of student motivation and satisfaction with the learning process. These findings suggest that digital gamified tools like Educaplay can effectively support vocabulary development in EFL contexts, offering an engaging and inclusive alternative to traditional methods.

Abstract

This research examines students' perceptions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL), focusing on their views regarding its benefits and challenges. Conducted at the English Language Education Study Program, Tarbiyah Faculty, IAIN Parepare, this study involved 30 students selected through random sampling to ensure generalizability. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing structured interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to gather insights into students’ experiences with AI tools such as Elsa Speak, Duolingo, and Google Assistant. Data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring themes and key perspectives. The findings revealed that students perceive AI as both advantageous and limiting in their EFL learning journey. On the positive side, AI was seen as increasing motivation, boosting confidence in speaking, and providing practical opportunities for self-directed learning. However, students also expressed concerns regarding overreliance on AI tools, decreased creativity in language production, and AI's inability to adapt to individual learning styles and personalities. Additionally, some participants worried about AI’s potential impact on future job opportunities. The study concludes that while students generally view AI as a valuable aid in EFL learning, they recognize the need for a balanced approach. Educators and learners should integrate AI with traditional learning methods to enhance effectiveness while minimizing its limitations. Future research should further explore students' long-term perceptions of AI and its role in diverse EFL learning contexts.
