Abstract

Online EFL teaching and learning has been described as a viable method of dealing with the pandemic. Only a few studies have focused on teachers' expectations as an important component of teaching effectiveness. As a result, the aim of this study is to ascertain teachers' perceptions of teaching English skills digitally, as well as their difficulties in dealing with them. The qualitative analysis approach was used in this sample, with three English teachers serving as respondents. It collects data through in-depth interviews. Data is compiled, transcribed, and sorted according to the primary topic of each sentence. The findings revealed that EFL teachers faced a number of difficulties when teaching English skills online.Teachers struggle to find adequate resources for listening, depend exclusively on YouTube, have difficulty recognizing students' comprehension, and do not consider last-year students to be relevant. In general, the internal network does not accept video conferences, there is a lack of feedback, and it is a time-consuming operation. Teachers find it difficult to monitor their students' reading activity, loss of reading abilities, more student-centered attitude, and poor attendance in class when it comes to reading. Finally, pupils are unable to write proper sentences, and teachers do not provide any critical thinking activities. It has also been discovered that the receptive abilities of listening and reading are the most difficult to develop in relation to online learning.

Abstract

This study attempts to quantify the washback effect of the intense TOEFL training program in order to inspire students' learning through improved test scores. The TOEFL results can then be used for academics objectives and faculty requirements. The study was experimental and included a paired-sample t-test and qualitative descriptive design through interviews (a mixed method). Forty (40) students were chosen from any of the departments at IAIN Parepare to participate, and this was done through pretest, treatments, and posttest. The pre-test and post-test employed in the research procedure were both used to determine the students' beginning scores as well as their final scores. The paired-sample t-test in SPSS is then used to assess the data gathered from the pre-test and post-test. The participants are questioned based on the program's experiences in order to acquire information about the students' learning motivation. The outcome revealed that there were sizable variations between the pre-test and post-test scores of the students. It was evident that participants' total TOEFL scores had improved as a result of the intense training. Also, the data from interview illustrated that the students were well-motivated during the training program. This program can enable the participants to have good self-study, nice self-learning preparation, and more desirably confident to learn English or TOEFL.

Abstract

Proper diction relates to the choice of words used in conveying an idea. Diction in speaking becomes a difficulty for English teachers in classroom interactions. Especially for beginner English teachers, some of them are still unfamiliar with choosing the right/good vocabulary for describing and explaining material in teaching or using English to give some instructions. This study aimed at finding out the effect of diction used by the teachers during the interaction in the EFL class. This research applied qualitative research design and applied discourse analysis method specifically conversational analysis on the teachers’ utterances. Respondents who participated in this research were two English teachers and students respectively. The researchers collected the data through observation by recording teachers’ voices and interviews. This research found that the words or terms used by both teachers had an impact on the interaction, feedback and students’ interest in learning English.  Miscommunication, misunderstandings, as well as a few feedbacks occurred in the classroom.  There were a few learning aspects faced by both observed teachers to use proper word choice. They were a source of materials, teaching media and tools, as well as teacher training. All of them constrained those English teachers to employ the proper words during interaction in the classroom. Teachers are expected to be careful in choosing words or terms to establish communication between teachers and students.
