Abstract

Garbage is still a problem in almost all regions in Indonesia, including in the Bello Sub-district of Kupang City of East Nusa Tenggara. Garbage in Bello Sub-district, some are simply thrown on the side of the road and some are collected to be disposed of individually or per household to landfills. In fact, with the right and simple technology, waste that used to be a problem as waste, dirty, smelly, causing disease and polluting the environment can become goods that can be utilized and have economic value. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide a little scientific knowledge to the public about the benefits of household organic waste and involve the community in making liquid organic fertilizer (LOF). The methods used were lectures and question-and-answer discussions during counseling about the benefits of household organic waste and liquid organic fertilizer for plant growth and production as well as soil fertility, and demonstrations during the manufacture of liquid organic fertilizer. The results of community service activities at RT 02/RW 01 of Bello Sub-district, obtained 1 training community group consisting of 10 housewives, whose were enthusiastic in participating in this training activity as shown by their full attention to the counseling activities provided by the presenters and demonstration activities for making liquid organic fertilizer by demonstrators, and also by their presence which is always complete, both at the first meeting (opening and demonstration of making LOF) on 8 July 2023 and at the second meeting (observation of results and closing) on 30 July 2023. In addition, from this community service activity, around 22 liters of LOF were also produced which were then distributed to each member of the training community group, each member of the activity implementation team who was present, and two facilitators for making LOF.

Abstract

Soil fauna is an important component of the soil ecosystem, playing a role in the decomposition of organic matter, nutrient cycling, and improving the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil. The use of Roundup herbicide as a weed control is suspected to have an impact on the presence and diversity of soil fauna. This study aims to determine the composition of soil fauna, the level of similarity, and the diversity index of soil fauna in land sprayed with Roundup herbicide and control land. The study was conducted in Maulafa District, Kupang City, using survey and field experiment methods. Soil fauna samples were taken at depths of 5, 10, and 15 cm and from the soil surface using a zigzag technique, then extracted with a modified Tullgren funnel. Environmental parameters measured included soil temperature, soil pH, and soil moisture. Data were analyzed using the similarity index, the Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’), and the soil fauna dominance index. The results showed that the application of Roundup herbicide did not cause mass lethality to soil fauna. The soil fauna composition in the treatment area remained diverse and was dominated by the order Collembola, particularly the families Isotomidae, Sminthuridae, and Onychiuridae. The similarity level between the treatment and control areas was high, with relatively stable diversity index values. This condition was influenced by the moist, litter-covered soil microclimate and the adaptability of the soil fauna through the detoxification mechanism of the Mixed Function Oxydases (MFO) enzyme.

Abstract

Soil fauna play a crucial ecological role in maintaining ecosystem balance, particularly in litter decomposition, soil structure improvement, and nutrient cycling. However, the presence of toxic chemical residues from leaves and herbicide applications has the potential to disrupt the survival of soil fauna. One source of litter suspected of impacting soil fauna is Chromolaena odorata, a weed containing bioactive flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins. This study aimed to determine the effect of leaf litter on soil insect populations and to analyze the impact of certain types of leaf litter in Maulafa District, East Nusa Tenggara. The study was conducted in November 2024 on cultivated land sprayed with Roundup herbicide in Maulafa Village, Kupang City. The research methods included soil and litter sampling, measuring pH, temperature, and soil moisture, and collecting soil fauna using the zigzag method in a 10 × 10 m plot at depths of 5, 10, and 15 cm. Samples were extracted using a modified Tullgren funnel for 24 hours and identified to the family or species level. The results of the study showed that 16 orders/families/species of soil fauna were found that generally live in the litter layer, while Isotomidae, Onychiuridae, and Sminthuridae are able to live up to a depth of 5 cm. Leaf litter acts as a source of energy and nutrition for soil fauna, and the chemical compounds of Chromolaena odorata are not lethal because soil fauna have an internal detoxification mechanism.

Abstract

Insects and soil fauna play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the soil ecosystem and serve as indicators of environmental quality. The use of insecticides in land management has the potential to impact the presence and diversity of soil fauna. This study aims to identify the types of insects and soil fauna found in cultivated land after the application of the insecticide Applaud 10 WP in the Maulafa Housing complex, Kupang City. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with a survey or exploration technique. Soil and litter samples were taken at various depths, then extracted using a Tullgren funnel and identified in the laboratory. Environmental parameters measured included soil pH, temperature, and soil moisture. The results showed that 14 species of insects and soil fauna were found at the study site belonging to several orders and families, including Acari, Collembola, Coleoptera, Hymemoptera, Isoptera, and Chilopoda. The soil pH, temperature, and soil moisture values were within a range that is considered good for supporting soil fauna life. Based on these results, it can be concluded that despite the application of Applaud 10 WP insecticide, soil fauna was still found with a certain diversity. The presence of this soil fauna demonstrates its role in maintaining the fertility and balance of the soil ecosystem in residential areas
