Abstract

Abstract Language learners’ willingness to communicate in the target language is the key role in achieving their language learning goals. The notion of ‘Willingness to Communicate’ (WTC) is a model or concept that integrates psychological, linguistic, and communicative variables in order to describe, explain, and predict foreign or second language communication. This study was conducted to explore the possible factors affecting EFL students’ unwillingness to communicate in English in campus. The data were gathered from three research participants using unstructured interview and were analyzed qualitatively using narrative inquiry method and thematic analysis strategy. The findings of this study revealed that the main factors affecting the students’ unwillingness to communicate in English during the learning time in campus were linguistic, psycholinguistic, socio-cultural, and institutional factors. And among those major factors, socio-cultural and institutional factors were identified to be the most dominant ones that affected the participants’ unwillingness to communicate in English in campus. Keywords: English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Narrative inquiry,                           Willingness to Communicate (WTC)   Abstrak Kemauan mahasiswa jurusan bahasa untuk menggunakan bahasa sasaran dalam berkomunikasi adalah menjadi kunci utama untuk mencapai tujuan mereka mempelajari bahasa tersebut. Abstract

Currently English is an international language that makes it easy to use it to be able to communicate between each other. This study aims to provide an overview of the use of social media as a medium of learning English to improve pronunciation or pronunciation, using the TikTok application as a learning medium. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods on 10 6th semester students majoring in English at Mahmud Yunus Islamic State University Batusangkaryang who have used the TikTok application. In collecting data, researchers used in-depth interviews with participants to explore information about TikTok as a learning media in improving pronunciation. From the interview, the researcher analyzed each answer from the respondent and the researcher found that the use of TikTok as a learning medium could improve the respondent's pronunciation or fluency in speaking English. Based on the results that researchers get, most students state that the TikTok application can improve their pronunciation skills and TikTok can be used as a learning media for pronunciation in English because it has many benefits and is effective in helping students and lecturers in teaching and learning activities.

Abstract

Pronunciation stands as a pivotal language component and achieving proficient English oral communication hinges on mastering accurate English pronunciation. This study aims to identify erroneous sounds produced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in English Phonology classes. Sixteen participants were selected using total population sampling, and oral examinations served as the primary data collection instrument. Employing a descriptive-qualitative method, the analysis focused on empirical facts and phenomena observed among participants. Results indicate that all participants (100%) exhibited improper pronunciation of English consonant phonemes /q/, /ð/, /?/, /d?/, and /?/, and associated words. Additionally, a majority (87.50%) struggled with /?/ and /t?/, while over half (62.50%) faced challenges with /f/ and /v/, and a subset (25%) encountered difficulties with /z/. These findings underscore persistent inaccuracies in English consonant pronunciation among EFL students, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions.

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of using YouTube videos as instructional media on advancing speaking fluency in an English conversation class. A quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-tests was employed, involving 30 first-semester students from an English Language and Culture program in Pontianak, Indonesia, using total population sampling. Data collection included two oral speaking tests, a speaking fluency rating scale, and a questionnaire. A mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative) was used for data analysis. Results showed that the mean post-test score (78) was significantly higher than the pre-test score (67.65), with a difference of 10.35 points. This indicates that YouTube videos are highly effective in improving EFL learners’ speaking fluency. The study highlights the importance of incorporating effective instructional media in EFL education to better address students' learning needs and enhance engagement, ultimately leading to more effective language learning outcomes.

Abstract

Background. Language processing and syntactic structure are closely linked to the cognitive system and mental representation. Mental representation serves as an internal model that allows speakers to predict, interpret, and produce grammatically structured sentences. In recent years, research in psycholinguistics and cognitive neuroscience has increasingly highlighted the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying syntactic processing. Understanding how mental representation interacts with syntax can help explain individual differences in language ability and processing efficiency. Purpose. This study aims to examine the role of mental representation in the construction and processing of syntactic structures. Specifically, the research investigates how cognitive factors such as working memory and attention influence the mental encoding and retrieval of syntactic patterns. Furthermore, the study seeks to understand the neural basis of syntactic processing and how different brain regions contribute to syntactic comprehension and production. Method. The research employs a qualitative approach combined with neuropsychological analysis. Data collection includes cognitive tests assessing working memory and attentional capacity, as well as brain imaging techniques such as functional MRI (fMRI) to observe neural activity during syntactic processing tasks. This multi-method approach provides both behavioral and neurological insights into the interplay between mental representation and syntax. Results. The findings show that brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex and Broca’s area exhibit significant activity during syntactic processing tasks. The level of brain activation correlates with individual differences in working memory and attention, indicating that cognitive capacity influences syntactic processing efficiency. Conclusion. Mental representation plays a critical role in syntactic structure formation and language processing. Cognitive factors, particularly working memory and attention, significantly contribute to the efficiency and accuracy of syntactic processing, highlighting the importance of integrating cognitive and neuropsychological perspectives in language research.
