Abstract

Abstract

Aquaponic is a combination of aquaculture and hydroponic plants in the recirculation system. The aquaponic system has a constraint in the form of ammonia which is produced by fish metabolism. In order to increase the productivity of fish and plants in aquaponics, an approach by integrating filters and biofilter could be used to reduce ammonia waste. The aim of this research was to study the use of zeolite, charcoal, and water spinach as components of integrated filters to reduce ammonia concentration in an aquaponic system. This research was conducted for four weeks with three repetitions of water sampling sourced from pond, filters, and output. The results of this study indicated that the use of combination of zeolite, charcoal and water spinach as componentof integrated filters can reduce ammonia throughout the research period.

Abstract

Laundry activity or washing clothes is an activity that almost all people in the world do. Like other human activities, laundry activity also produces waste or filth. But, the waste is often directly disposed of any treatment to the water like rivers or lakes. It finally causes contamination to the nature, one of them is known as eutrophication or nutrition enrichment, then it will harm the growth of aquatic organisms. To overcome the problem, the laundry waste needs to be treated before it is disposed of the nature. Biofilter and Constructed Wetland are low cost systems and easily handled, so this system is suitable to be applied on small or household scale. Equisetum hyemale is a decorative plant which has already been used to treat many wastewater, and proves it’s effectiveness in reducing the pollutant in wastewater. In this research a hybrid system of Biofilter with additions of activated carbon and Constructed Wetland with Equisetum hyemale is used to treat laundry wastewater, with HRT of 4 days we found a decrease of tested parameters, TDS 346.94 mg/L (21.15 %); TSS 11.25 mg/L (88.88 %); BOD 31.86 mg/L (63.68 %); Phosphate 3.41 mg/L (83.28 %); and Detergent 1.10 mg/L (93.1 %).

Abstract

The siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus), an endemic primate of Indonesia, is critically endangered due to hunting and habitat destruction and is now predominantly found in conservation areas. This study aims to analyze the feeding behavior and food preferences of siamangs in the zoo, evaluate the suitability of the ex-situ diet composition compared to their natural diet, and assess its contribution to biology education. The research methods included 480 hours of feeding behaviour observation using scan sampling, descriptive data analysis, and Pearson correlation tests. The results indicate that the siamang's diet in zoos is dominated by fruit (53.88% for males and 56.38% for females), followed by leaves and supplementary foods such as tubers and biscuits. The dietary composition is similar to studies conducted in their natural habitat, although the variety of zoo food is more limited. Adjustments to the feeding menu, such as hanging food at elevated locations and increasing the variety of local fruits, could support the siamangs' natural feeding behaviours. In conclusion, the feeding patterns of siamangs in zoos largely align with their natural behaviour as frugivores, although improvements in feeding methods and dietary variety are needed. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of aligning ex-situ conditions with natural habitats to support animal welfare and conservation programs while also strengthening the role of zoos as centres for education and biodiversity preservation.
