Abstract

Students' willingness and desire to learn have an impact on their academic achievement. Students' willingness and desire to learn can be measured by Self-Directed Learning Readiness. However, the relationship between SDLR and academic achievement of medical students has never been studied, so it needs to be done. Descriptive analytical research with a cross-sectional approach was conducted on students (n=184) who met the respondent inclusion criteria. Self-Directed Learning Readiness consists of self-management, self-control, and desire to learn. Self-Directed Learning Readiness ability was measured using the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale questionnaire. The academic achievements used in this study were the Objective Structured Clinical Examination scores, Weekly Exams, and Final Block Exams in the Emergency Medicine Block and the Endocrine System Pathology, Metabolism, and Nutrition Block for the 2024/2025 academic year. None of the UNISMA Faculty of Medicine students had low Self-Directed Learning Readiness (high = 126, medium = 58) and there was a significant relationship with the Weekly Exam scores (p = 0.003), Final Block Exam (p = 0.004), and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (p = 0.008). Students with high Self-Directed Learning Readiness showed better academic achievement, especially on the Objective Structured Clinical Examination score (mean = 62.53). There were significant differences between the high, medium, and low Self-Directed Learning Readiness groups on the Weekly Exam scores (p = 0.003), End of Block Exam (p = 0.004), and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (p = 0.008). The test also showed that self-management (p = 0.000, t = 4.862), self-control (p = 0.000, t = 3.507), and learning desire (p = 0.001, t = 3.336) had a significant positive effect on academic achievement. These results indicate the importance of readiness for independent learning in achieving academic success, as well as providing direction for institutions to continue developing students' SDLR. Self-Directed Learning Readiness abilities consisting of self-management, self-control, and desire to learn have a positive and significant effect on the academic achievement of students of the Medical Education Study Program, FK Unisma.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of globalization, marked by digitalization and individualistic ideologies, has presented significant challenges to the relevance and philosophy of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) in Indonesia. Many previous studies have not holistically integrated curriculum reform, digital engagement, and spiritual foundations within a coherent Islamic educational philosophy. This study aims to address that gap by proposing a transformative model grounded in the philosophy of ta'dīb and critical pedagogy. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach based on literature review, this research analyzes how formal Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia are adapting to the pressures of globalization and modernity. The findings reveal that globalization has led to a disconnection between traditional pedagogical approaches and students' lived experiences, as well as lagging curriculum standards. However, promising transformations are occurring through curricular reform, pedagogical innovation, and spiritual revitalization. This study contributes to the theoretical discourse by emphasizing that IRE must not only adapt to modern demands but also lead moral and intellectual renewal through spiritually anchored transformation.

Abstract

In many Islamic educational settings, the teaching of Arabic often emphasizes rote linguistic mastery rather than the internalization of moral and spiritual values. Within pesantren contexts, mahfuzat concise Arabic maxims have long served as a traditional medium linking language learning with ethical and spiritual formation. The research aims to identify core values embedded in selected verses from Ustaz Qoimuddin’s Jawāhir al-Maḥfūẓāt and to analyze how those values are internalized through classroom practice. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected from 30 first-year Tsanawiyah students at Pondok Pesantren Darullughah Wadda’wah via classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and text analysis. Findings show five interrelated value themes—pursuit of knowledge, humility, righteous companionship, respect for teachers, and perseverance—becoming habituated through a three-phase cycle: memorization (ḥifẓ), understanding (tafahhum), and embodiment (tatbīq). Rhythmic recitation and dialogic reflection enable students to connect linguistic beauty with ethical intent, while the Arabic-using school environment strengthens value absorption in daily interactions. The impact of this approach is a demonstrable integration of linguistic proficiency, ethical awareness, and spiritual sensitivity. The study concludes that teaching mahfuzat offers a culturally authentic, scalable model of value-based language education that revitalizes the classical harmony of ‘ilm, adab, and taqwā in contemporary Islamic schooling.
