Abstract

The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the barter du-hope tradition as a traditional Lamalera exchange system of goods in a subsistence economic system, (2) to explain the barter du-hope tradition resulting in a new kinship competition (prefo) based on mutual trust between communities. This study uses ethnographic methods to be able to get emic of the du-hope barter system. The study was conducted in four villages, namely Lamalera, Wulandoni, Puor and Labalimut. The results showed two main theses. First, the barter du-hope tradition is the economic defence system of the local community. Barter du-hope became the food security system of the Lamalera coastal community and the mountain community. Secondly, du-hope barter transactions create new relationships built on strong social trust. Prefo is a new kinship like family (outside of biological kinship) built on mutual trust between the people of Lamalera and other communities in the mountain area. Social trust is created by exchanging and sharing food items and building joint needs. Preference is a complete moral relationship with a sense and desire to help one another. This research provides support for the development of the local economy by providing support and space for the protected system of the barter du-hope Lamalera, which is now being threatened by the capitalist economic system and the global market.

Abstract

The dynamics that occur in the border region of the country have always been an interesting study to be examined. The government's effort to change the paradigm of the border region is to use a welfare approach, one of which is improving governance in the border region, accelerating development, and equitable development in eastern Indonesia. This effort encountered obstacles and barriers, including the readiness of the community to accept change. In fact, East Nusa Tenggara is a province with a multi-ethnic society, and the people who live in the border area of Province East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) –Timor Leste are indigenous people who are united by strong traditions and have strong emotional ties as a unity of Indigenous Peoples. This study focuses on the cultural adaptation strategies carried out by the indigenous people of NTT in the border areas towards the realization of the Nawacita program (9 national development priorities as the focus of Indonesian renewal in order to have political sovereignty, be able to be independent in managing the economy, and have a cultured personality). The target of this study is to analyze the forms of cultural adaptation of the indigenous people of NTT in adjusting to changes in the border area, along with the inhibiting factors. We use qualitative research methods and data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and FGDs with relevant institutions. The analysis is based on the theories of cultural interaction and cultural adaptation.

Abstract

The border communities of Indonesia and Timor Leste present intriguing social and cultural phenomena. The social relations between these border communities in both countries remain strong due to kinship ties and historical proximity, despite being separated by national administrative boundaries. The aim of this study is to analyze the cross-cultural communication patterns of the Indonesia-Timor Leste border communities through Facebook social media and to explore the meanings attached to digital interactions on social media by these communities. This qualitative research adopts an interpretive paradigm, employing a media ethnography methodology. Data collection was carried out through observations and in-depth interviews with community members, including youth, women, and community leaders. The findings indicate that social media has brought about a transformation in cross-cultural communication within the border communities, where Facebook has "replaced" conventional communication that previously relied on physical visits for socio-cultural activities between the Indonesia-Timor Leste border populations. The border communities also perceive the use of Facebook as a space to strengthen kinship, preserve cultural identity, and support local border economic activities. However, this study also identifies negative impacts of Facebook use, such as disputes arising from misinterpretations in digital communication, which are often resolved through culturally-based conflict resolution mechanisms. Overall, this research demonstrates that social media not only functions as a communication tool but also as a cultural space in which the Indonesia-Timor Leste border communities maintain their connectivity, identity, and solidarity.
