Abstract

Using portfolio as a academic writing assessment has been applied in the last semester. For the following action this paper investigates the students opinions as their perceptions and reflections of the portfolios assessment that has been applied in academic writing I. The data have been obtained from semi-structured interviews with 10 students English Department who took Academic Writing I. The qualitative research design was administered to analyze the data by identifying and classifying the contents of student’ opinion and reflections toward portfolio assessment that has been implemented in Academic Writing I. The investigation found that most of students encouraged the implementation of portfolios assessment, the students cited that the portfolio gives a positive reward to the students’ writing. They felt portfolio assessment can build the objective assessment. Thus, it is recommend to keep using portfolios to assess the students’ composition. And also the improvement of portfolio is needed that is e-portfolios in academic writing assessment.

Abstract

Listening is one receptive skill which represents students’ ability in understanding a language. Nowadays, media have certain rule to influence this listening skill; e- radio (ABC Newsradio Australia) becomes one effective medium to increase students’ listening skill. This article aims to investigate the effect of e-radio on listening achievement of third semester students of English department at Islamic University of Malang. Pre-experimental research is used as the research design with the pre-test and post-test as the main instrument. The result of T-test showed that there is significant effect of the using e-radio on students’ listening achievement.

Abstract

The society in using language is susceptible to any type of word including the expression of swear word. This research aims to determine of the types in swear word use based on the gender of its use in communication. Descriptive qualitative is used as a research approach and its application uses phenomenology methods. The data are from male and female students by matching them to Wardhaugh’s and Jay’s list of swear word. Students of elefth social three are selected for this research. Analysis of the results of gender-based reviews shows that men are stronger in the use of swear word forms. In contrast to women who are more aggressive and talk much only in their groups. Sex, death, excretion, bodily functions, religious matters, politics, mother-in-law, animals, nicknames are more widely used by men. For the types of rude comments women use more. This is indicated by their words and expressions that are more feminine and long-winded. Finally, the swear word which is included in this taboo word is used sometimes not the same for men and women.

Abstract

This study aims to know the implementation of cognitive summarizing strategies in teaching learning listening class, the researcher was chosen cognitive summarizing as strategy to deliver the material to the students. This study was descriptive qualitative research and conducted on June 17th – 18th, 2020. The participants of this research were the English teacher and the students of XI MIPA 2 at SMA Negeri 1 Arosbaya. The data were obtained by observing the students, the teacher, and the implementation of cognitive summarizing strategies listening class by making a transcript and screenshot of the result. The result of the observation indicates that the implementation of cognitive summarizing strategies in listening class makes the students more enthusiastic about the material and they can deliver what they have been heard from the podcasts or audio using their own words.

Abstract

The strategy is very important in teaching so the teacher must be able to choose a strategy that suitable with students’ need. Time Reading Activity (TRA) which is design allow students to self-assess their reading, reading quickly under time pressure and answer several question. This strategy used to know the effect on students’ reading speed in SMA Darul Kholil. The method used in this study is pre-experimental design which is designed by using one group pre-test post-test. In this method the researcher only use one group in collecting data. The research conducted to all of students in X IPA with a total 24 students. The result of students pre- test and post-test show improvement. The score in minimum and maximum both of the test are increased. Not only that, the students reading times are faster with the mean of score pre-test 62.08 and the mean of post-test scores is 79.58. There is significant effect on students regarding Time Reading Activity strategy. This can be seen from the results of the paired sample t-test which show t-test value is greater than t-table. From has been counted through SPSS, the t-test value (8.668) t-table value (2.068) with significant value 0.000.

Abstract

Listening is one of important skill in English language acquisition, serving as the parts for speaking and writing. It involves decoding and reconstructing information to understand communication fully. Traditional teaching methods often fail to engage students, making modern approaches essential. Podcasts, as digital audio or video media, have emerged as an effective tool for teaching listening comprehension. They provide accessible, engaging, and diverse content that motivates students to learn. Research indicates that podcasts positively impact students' listening skills, vocabulary, pronunciation, and accent recognition, while also enhancing their ability to interpret messages. At STKIP PGRI Bangkalan, podcasts were used to explore motivational themes, showing their potential as a versatile and engaging medium for teaching listening comprehension. This research pointing the value of podcasts in modern English language education, suggesting further exploration of their application across diverse contexts.
