Abstract

AbstractThe Tabuit ritual is a culture from the Middle East brought by people of Indian descent who are Shia believers. Over time, there was an agreement between nagari (adat) to adapt the Tabuik celebration to Minangkabau customs, so that it developed into a Pariaman cultural tradition. The main elements of tabuik, such as bungo salapan, tonggak atam, tonggak serak, jantuang-jantuang, pasu-pasu, and ula gerang which number eight are a description of the combination of Pariaman customs and religion. The traditional values contained in tabuik are not far from religious values. The research approach uses qualitative. While conceptual, namely the process of synthesis between Islam and Nusantara culture. With the synthesis process, the dynamics that occur in the Islamic culture of the archipelago continue to move dynamically and progressively by actualizing themselves in accordance with the context of their time. Keywords: Tabuik tradition, Islamic legacy, Pariaman local culture, synthesis process.

Abstract

Abstract

The synthesis between Islam and Javanese culture is presented in a book by Mark R. Woodward, who conducts ethnographic research and studies the manuscripts written by court scholars in Java. Javanese Islam, as analyzed in Woodward’s book "Islam Jawa, Kasalehan Normatif Versus Kebatinan," is translated from "Islam in Java: Normative Piety and Mysticism." It portrays Islam as teaching normative piety and inner spirituality. Islam encompasses not only tauhid (the oneness of God) and fiqh (law) but also teaches tasawuf (Sufism) to Javanese Muslims. In contrast, modernist Islam does not regard tasawuf as a core teaching of Javanese Muslims, as explained by Mitsuo Nakamura. Nakamura conducted ethnographic research in Kotagede and used written sources from the Lebaran brochures produced by Muhammadiyah. Nakamura concludes that "Islamization" in Java will continue, as noted in his book "Bulan Sabit Terbit Di Atas Pohon Beringin," translated from "The Crescent Arises over the Banyan Tree: A Study of the Muhammadiyah Movement in a Central Javanese Town, c. 1910s-2010." The synthesis of Islam and Javanese culture will persist across time and space. Both Javanese Islam (Nusantara) by Woodward and modernist Islam by Nakamura, studied in these two books, represent a continuing process of intersection between Islam and local culture. Keywords: Javanese Islam, Traditional Islam, Modernist Islam, Muhammadiyah

Abstract

This article aims to explain the strategy of disseminating Islamic scholarship in the Nusantara archipelago. These strategies are described by referring to the Muslim intellectual figures or scholars involved, the Islamic scholarship developed, and the context of scientific development itself. This study uses a literature-based analysis of the historical development of Islamic scholarship from the 16th century to the 20th century. The finding of this article is that there are two main strategies carried out by Islamic scholars or intellectuals in the context of developing Islam in the archipelago, namely scholarly journey (rihlah ilmiah) and kitabah. Through these findings this article is expected to enrich the understanding of the working process and the formation of Islam Nusantara as epistemic community among Southeast Asia Muslim intellectuals, especially Indonesia, in these centuries.
