Abstract

The research was aimed to know the influence of Mnemonic Technique towards students’ vocabulary mastery, and to know whether or not the average score of the students’ vocabulary mastery which is taught by using Mnemonic Technique. In conducting the research, the writer used experimental method. The population in this research were the students at the second semester of eighth class at MTs Negeri 1 Tanjung Karang 319 students in 9 classes. The sample of this research was two classes, one class was VIII KK as experimental class there were 30 students, and another class was VIII F as the control class there were 31 students. In determining the sample, the writer used cluster random sampling technique. In collecting the data, the writer used vocabulary test. In analyzing the data the writer used t-test formula. Based on the data analysis, the students who were taught Mnemonic technique get higher score than those who were taught translation technique. It can be seen from calculating of the result of the hypothesis testing and average score of the experimental class that was higher than the control class. The average score of experimental class is 74.66 and the average score of the control class is 70.53. it also can be seen at the significant level 0.01 and 0.05 the ttest is higher than ttable (ttest ttable),that is 2.73 > 1.68 for significant level 0.01 and 2.73 > 2.02 for significant level 0.05. Therefore, substitution strategy gave the positive influence of Mnemonic technique towards students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth class of MTs Negeri 1 Tanjung Karang in 2017/2018.

Abstract

Abstract: This research explores the cultural content of English textbook for senior high school grade XI entitled “Hornbill Textbook in English for Class XI”. The study aims to investigate what cultures are represented and how cultures are represented in the textbook. To analyse the textbook, this study applied content analysis with descriptive qualitative method. This research used four kinds of instrument in collecting the data; they were textbook, observation, deep reading, and secondary resources. This research also adopted two frameworks from Cortazzi and Jin (3) about types of culture and framework from Adaskou, Britten and Fahsi (1990) about Sense of culture. The analysis of the textbook has revealed some significant results. In comparison to three types of culture, Hornbill Textbook in English for Class XI (Core Course) emphasized Source Culture the most than Target Culture and International Culture. On the other hand, the research finds that cultures are represented by sociological sense (15 times), pragmatic sense (15 times), aesthetic sense (11 times), and semantic sense (10 times).

Abstract

Program Kampus Mengajar merupakan upaya untuk mendukung peningkatan kualitas pendidikan di Indonesia, khususnya di daerah-daerah yang memerlukan dukungan lebih. Peran ini melibatkan siswa sebagai mitra guru di sekolah sasaran dengan tujuan membantu pembelajaran dan memperkaya pengalaman mengajarnya. Dalam pengabdian ini, dilakukan asistensi di SD Negeri Melungun Ratu yang terletak di Kecamatan Sungkai Tengah Kabupaten Lampung Utara dan dilaksanakan mulai 26 Februari 2024 sampai 13 Juni 2024. Adapun kegiatan asistensi tersebut antara lain: mading kelas, membaca 15 menit, estafet writing, belajar kreatif literasi dan numerasi, adaptasi teknologi, kreativitas dan lingkungan, serta penjagaan dan perawatan perpustakaan. Metode pelaksanaan asistensi ini dilakukan dalam beberapa tahap kegiatan seperti pra penugasan, penugasan, dan pasca penugasan. Dengan adanya program kampus mengajar ini dapat memberikan dampak positif baik bagi Mahasiswa dan pihak sekolah terutama bagi SD Negeri Melungun Ratu Sungkai Tengah untuk menunjang pembelajaran yang interaktif dan lebih efektif serta meningkatkan motivasi belajar siswa.

Abstract

Writing skill is one of the most important language skill to be mastered in the language learning process, especially English. The writing process starts from writing a paragraph. Paragraph are important in writing skill. The purpose of this research was to find students’ problems in writing Paragraph and the dominant problem in Writing Paragraph at The Second Semester of English Education at Muhammadiyah Kotabumi University. This research employed descriptive qualitative research that examined 8 students in the second semester of English Education Study Program. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The instrument used to collect the data were document of students writing tasks and interview guideline. The kind of interview that was used semi-structured interview. Based on theories of Bryne divides writing problems into three categories. The first is linguistic problems. Linguistic aspects such as grammar, vocabulary, Language use and choice of sentence in writing. The second is Physiology, namely content. The third is cognitive such as spelling, punctuation, capitalization and paragraph. Based on the findings, the results showed that the students' problems in writing paragraph indicate that students faced problems in 2 categories which consisted: linguistic and cognitive problems. Linguistic problems which consist of grammar is 49, vocabulary is 7, and choice of sentence is 2, and cognitive problems which consist of spelling is 1, punctuation is 26, capitalization is 29, and paragraphing is 3. Moreover, it also findthe dominant problem in writing paragraph was linguistic problems which consist grammar is 49 where student still experience problems in understanding the basic nature of grammar, namely problems in terms of  the appropriateness of the placement of to be, and the correct pattern of verbs. Then, for the Physiology problem, namely content, there were no problems found on the results of the analysis of 8 students' writing documents  at the second semester of English education at Muhammadiyah Kotabumi University.

Abstract

Keimanan menjadi salah satu yang penting bagi kehidupan beragama. Keimanan berarti percaya, seringkali kita ketahui bahwa keimanan atau iman menjadi dasar kita dalam memeluk suatu agama. Keimanan atau iman sendiri menimbulkan hal positif bagi kehidupan kita, karena keimanan atau iman muncul karena dasar kepercayaan, dari kepercayaan tersebut menimbulkan sikap patuh dan taat, sederhananya patuh dan taat kepada perintah dan larangan yang sudah ditetapkan oleh tuhan yang maha esa. Suluk baka sendiri menjelaskan mengenai hubungan antara tuhan dan makhluk ciptaanya, dan hal menarik yakni mengenai keimanan atau iman yang tersirat pada berberapa isbat yang ada pada suluk tersebut. Sehingga artikel kami mengambil judul “ Representasi simbol keimanan dalam isbat “ Ngangsu banyu apikulan warih, amek geni adedamar “ dalam suluk baka. Penlitian ini dilatarbelakangi karena pentingnya keimanan dalam kehidupan khususnya kehidupan beragama dengan menggunakan teori semiotik menurut Charles sanders pierce. Penelitian ini diharapkan bias memberikan informasi mengenai representasi simbol keimanan dalam bentuk isbat yang ada pada suluk baka yang menjadi acuan dalam mempertahankan dan meningkatkan keimanan.

Abstract

Curiosity and desire to learn in early childhood seem low, especially in terms of introducing English because it is considered difficult and boring. To overcome this problem, educators and teachers must try to teach English in a fun way. Nursery Rhymes, children's songs, or simple poems in English are ideal educational resources for early childhood. However, most kindergarten teachers in Kotabumi Kota District still face various challenges when using technology and making creative learning innovations. The PkM activity aims to socialize the effective and fun Nursery Rhymes English learning media for kindergarten children to kindergarten teachers in Kotabumi Kota District. This activity was carried out at ABA 1 Kindergarten Kotabumi and was attended by ABA Kindergarten teachers throughout Kotabumi Kota District and all ABA Kindergarten teachers from the North Lampung region. This PkM activity was carried out well and successfully. The results of this PkM activity showed an increase and understanding of teachers about fun and interactive methods that can be applied to early childhood children in introducing English.

Abstract

In learning a language, the first thing to grasp is words. One method of word formation is compounding, which involves combining two elements from existing words to create a new word. Compounds are categorized into three groups based on the part of speech: nominal compounds, verbal compounds, and adjectival compounds. The formation of compound words gives rise to their meaning, involving two kinds of semantic headedness—namely, endocentric compounds and exocentric compounds. These compound words can be identified in articles from the education issue of The Jakarta Post edition from April 2021. The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) to identify the types of compound words; (2) to determine the semantic headedness of compound words; and (3) to calculate the percentages of compound types and semantic headedness. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The results reveal three types of compound words: nominal compounds (656 words), verbal compounds (2 words), and adjectival compounds (5 words). Additionally, two types of compound words were identified—650 words were endocentric compounds, and 16 words were exocentric compounds. The percentages of compound word types were as follows: 98.5% nominal compounds, 0.3% verbal compounds, and 1.2% adjectival compounds. Meanwhile, the percentages of semantic headedness were 97.60% for endocentric compounds and 2.40% for exocentric compounds. This study provides valuable information about compound words in the context of language learning.
