Abstract

There are 5 indicators in writing descriptive texts such as: identification, description, use of language, vocabulary and mechanics. Based on the problems found at the beginning of the research, the purpose of this research was to find the students ability in writing descriptive text on English subject in SMPN 33 Padang. The type of research is descriptive research. Participants of the research were VIIIs grade students at SMPN 33 Padang. Data obtained through writing descriptive text tests. The data is analyzed by combining Heatons theory of assessment in writing and research rubrics about writing. The results of the research concluded that students ability in writing identification was Good to Average, students ability in writing descriptive was Fair to Poor, students ability in language use was Very Poor, students ability in using vocabulary was Fair to poor, and students ability in using mechanics was Fair to Poor. Then, the results of the research also showed that students had difficulty in identifying objects clearly, difficulties in developing related ideas, students lack of understanding of simple present tense structures, limited vocabulary, and errors in mechanics. Abstract

Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menemukan kesulitan-kesulitan siswa dalam memahami teks bacaan analytical exposition. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, menunjukkan bahwa ada 8 indikator yang mempengaruhi siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam memahami teks analitikal ekposisi. Hal Ini menjelaskan bahwa dari setiap indikator dalam memahami teks analitikal eksposisi, sebagian besar siswa dapat mengidentifikasi topik, sebagian dari siswa juga dapat mengidentifikasikan ide pokok dari sebuah teks dan menemukan arti kata dalam konteks, sebagian kecil siswa dapat mengidentfikasikan acuan kata dan inferensi atau kesimpulan, dan sebagian besar siswa juga dapat menentukan tujuan komunikasi sebuah teks, struktur teks dan penggunaan bahasa dalam teks analitikal exposisi. Ini ditunjukkan bahwa siswa mempunyai kesulitan dalam berbagai factor dari pemahaman membaca teks analitikal eksposisi. Dan disamping itu, interview juga menunjukkaan banyak siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam mengidentifikasi makna kata dalam konteks, acuan kata, dan kesimpulan/inferensi. Hal Ini dikarenakan mereka tidak paham apa yang disampaikan didalam teks, penggunaan bahasa apa di dalam teks, tidak memahami teks, minimnya kosa kata, dan malas untuk membaca teks dengan seksama

Abstract

Having sufficient English vocabulary especially the technical one indeed becomes one of the aspects in supporting the English learning for Electrical Engineering students. This classroom action research study, therefore, aims to investigate students’ motivation and proficiency on technical vocabulary through the implementation of Flipped Learning. This study was conducted to the second semester students of Electrical Engineering Study Program of Polytechnic of Raflesia. The Flipped Learning was implemented in two cycles consisting of four meetings of each cycle. Pre-test and post-test were given along the learning to assure the improvement on students’ vocabulary. The interview then was conducted as well to figure out how Flipped Learning influenced students’ motivation. The study reveals that Flipped Learning does contribute positively to the students’ motivation and their proficiency on Technical Vocabulary, especially on noun and verb related to the safety precaution and safety equipment.

Abstract

This classroom action research aims to portray the improvement on student’ vocabulary proficiency and creative thinking through video project learning. The research was conducted to the first-semester students of the Islamic Economics Study Program of IAIN Curup. Observation and interview were used to collect the data. Observation on the video was on two purposes. First, to collect the data about English vocabulary used by the students to describe students’ vocabulary proficiency. Second, to collect the data on the performance of the video as a whole to analyze students’ creative thinking. The interview, in addition, was conducted to the students to gain a deeper understanding of the creative thinking process the students went through to complete the video project. The results of the study indicate that in terms of vocabulary, students' ability still needs improvement. Meanwhile, in terms of creative thinking in creating the video, students have demonstrated good creative thinking skills.
