Abstract

This research talks about the subjectivity of women sex workers in Utuy Tatang Sontani’s works titled Selamat Jalan Anak Kufur, “Menuju Kamar Durhaka”, and “Doger.” Women sex worker are portrayed through characters named Titi, Aku, and Selendang Merah. By using a feminist literary criticism method that focuses on women’s body and space, the discussion has been divided into two sections related to body, space, and subjectivity of the sex workers. Body and space are the crucial aspects for the characters in Utuy’s works when achieving their status as a subject. Based on the results of the analysis it can be interpreted that: (1) the bodies and spaces of the sex workers are depicted as an ambivalent asset in their position both as subject and object; (2) the position of happy subject-object status of the sex workers is closely related to the perspective used by the character in looking at sex workers. Therefore, it can be argued that Utuy positioned the three women characters in the position of subjects and objects that were not fixed.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article discusses the identity construction of Priangan coffee and how it is reflected in the way it is consumed as part of a lifestyle and is later popularized via the social media. Priangan coffee has gained popularity among coffee enthusiasts as it was valued at a higher price in comparison to other Indonesian local coffee. The renewed interest has brought the coffee to the many coffee shops in West Java, in particular Bandung and Jatinangor, where going to coffee shops becomes part of the university students living there. The article looks into the way (or ways) Priangan coffee is consumed and revamped in the coffee discourse which might have partly constituted a new cultural movement in the area. The new culture surrounding coffee is assumed to contain complex interactions of dichotomies such as local-global and given-new. Through questionnaires distributed in coffee shops in Bandung and Jatinangor and interviews that follow, it was found that the cultural movement built around the idea of coffee as part of a new life lifestyle has not strengthened a solid identity for Priangan coffee. Going to coffee shops has become part of a lifestyle which does not necessarily lead to the making coffee enthusiasts. Therefore, there is a need to "educate" coffee goers and to optimize the role played by social media in developing awareness on the local coffee variants, especially Priangan coffee. Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the empty space in Joko Pinurbo’s poetries with Iser's reception theory, especially the concept of unbesthimmheit (empty space), which can be filled by interpreting the text based on the reader's repertoire. The research method is descriptive qualitative. The analysis is carried out by identifying the repertoire, empty space, filling the empty space, actualizing meaning, and interpreting the aesthetic effect. The results of the study are: 1) visual form, titimangsa, and diction are clues that refer to the repertoire, namely religious practices in Indonesia in 2015-2016, 2) empty space in the form of metaphorical ambiguity and the absence of explanation of causal relations in the text, 3) empty space is filled with SARA conflicts and identity polarization, especially the case of Ahok and Meiliana as defendants in blasphemy, 4) aesthetic interpretation in the form of reflection on religious practices that are trapped in rituals so that they are vulnerable to intolerance, the solution is the actualization of love for others.
