Abstract

The role of the madrasa principal is pivotal in an educational institution. The leadership of the madrasa head determines the direction and is the main indicator of student achievement and achievements. Maintaining and improving the quality of education is one of the goals of national education, and madrasa heads are mandated to make it happen. The quality of learning in Indonesia is still a concern and is far from satisfactory. The COVID-19 pandemic is a scourge for education actors, especially school and madrasa principals, who are leaders in educational institutions to maintain the quality of learning. This research aims to determine the problems, strategies, and implications experienced by madrasa heads in efforts to maintain or improve the quality of learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research is classified as qualitative research using a descriptive analysis approach. This research involved madrasa heads in Central Aceh Regency. Based on the results of interviews, it was found that the biggest problem faced by madrasa heads during the pandemic was the lack of readiness of teachers and students to carry out distance learning from home. This readiness includes limited internet networks for students to access online learning media. In general, the strategy adopted by madrasa principals is to implement shift classes and involve the homeroom teacher in providing materials (printouts) and collecting assignments at school. All of this has implications for the role of madrasa heads, who must further increase the level of preparedness, decision-making, application of creative ideas, and risk management to the demands of educational development or emergencies.

Abstract

Quipper is one of widely recognised Online Learning Platforms for learners on many levels. Quipper is equipped with several features that can support the process of learning, especially for language learning. This study aims to deeply discuss the features offered by Quipper that can benefit the learners through suitable instructional design used in learning English; and to provide the implication of its use for Indonesian education context. This study is library research where the data were derived from relevant articles and previous studies. The research findings revealed that some features of Quipper could benefit students to acquire new vocabulary, punctuality and grammatical awareness through Chat Room or In-built Messaging. Moreover, as web-based learning platform, Quipper could expose the multimodal exposure (written, oral and visual) for foreign language input. More importantly, Quipper was interestingly viewed by many learners as a new way of learning that somehow could enhance their positive language learning intensity. Nevertheless, even though Quipper is positively welcomed, it might imply several challenges and limitations. In Indonesian education context, Quipper could not be fully used as the main platform for learning because there would be a great reliance on teachers to misuse the features that leading to the boring class activity and lack of teaching professionalism.

Abstract

This study examines the successful implementation of education system in Finland and attempt to draw some comparative reflection towards Indonesian curriculum. The greatness of Finnish curriculum has been positively admitted by many countries and proved through several claims, achievements, surveys and studies. In general, there are several factors that guarantee the successful implementation of education quality in Finland, namely holistic curriculum framework; play-based early education; limited standardised testing; teacher autonomy and professionalism; comprehensive teacher training; equitable educational opportunities; collaborative learning environment; and emphasis of student well-being. The findings suggested that there were several factors that totally distinguish between Finnish and Indonesian curriculum. To put in a nutshell, Indonesia is multicultural and crowded-population country which became the main challenge for the government to distribute an equal access, unlike what Finland implemented the “education for all (equal)”. The welfare of teachers in Indonesia was also considerably low compared to the professionalism of Finnish teachers, even, the trust issue occurred in whole society in Indonesia result to the disintegration between the actors of education and the policymakers in Indonesia.

Abstract

Motivated by an increasing reliance on subtitles among audiences who may not fully grasp the source language of movies and videos, this study explores subtitle translation, as subtitles have an essential function in facilitating comprehension among audiences. Here, the study focuses on a TED Talk video titled “How Books Can Open Your Mind”. The purpose is to examine the effects of translation errors in subtitles. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, involving several viewings of the video to attain a comprehensive knowledge of the context. Errors were then identified, categorized, and analyzed using relevant literature and references, including the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI). Findings reveal that the identified errors consisted of semantic changes, singular nominal forms, reduction, misinterpretation errors, amplification, and the use of uncommon words. Of these errors, semantic changes were the most frequent, followed by reductions and uncommon words. This study hopes to discover these translation problems in order to better support subtitle translators as well as enhance the viewing experience of target-language audiences in the years to come.
