Abstract

Background: After stroke occurs, the patients generally have upper extremity hemiparesis. It makes movement restrictions due to decreased elbow active ROM and abnormal upper arm muscle tone, so they need to get rehabilitation therapy. Besides conventional therapy, robotic therapy has now been developed to restore their motor funtions. Objective: To prove that the effect of robotic therapy in increasing elbow active ROM and improving upper arm muscle tone in ischemic stroke patients is better than the effect of conventional rehabilitation exercises. Methods: A quasy-experimental study with two groups pre-test and post-test design was carried out among outpatient ischemic stroke patients in Diponegoro National Hospital and William Booth General Hospital Semarang which was chosen using consecutive sampling. The interventions were by doing exercises using an exoskeleton robotic hand in the robotic group and conventional rehabilitation exercises in the control group. Pre-test and post-test data of robotic group were analyzed using Wilcoxon test, while pre-test dan post-test data of control group were analyzed using Wilcoxon test and paired t-test. Pre-test an post-test data between two groups were analyzed using Mann-Whitney test and unpaired-t test. Results: The robotic group experienced an insignificant increase in ROM (p= 0,593) and significant improvement in muscle tone (p= 0,025). The control group experienced insignificant reduction in ROM (p= 0,980) and insignificant improvement in muscle tone (p= 0,081). Conclusion: There was a significant improvement of upper arm muscle tone in ischemic stroke patients after had exoskeleton robotic hand exercise. Abstract

AbstractBackground : Periodontal diseases affect up to 80% of the global population. Periodontitis is a long-term inflammatory disease that affects the soft and hard tissues around the teeth. It may also play a role in the pathogenesis of atheroma formation and is associated with cerebrovascular disease. The Carotid Intima Media Thickness (CIMT) is a good marker for detecting early and progressive atherosclerosis. Several hypotheses link chronic infectious diseases, including periodontal tissue disease, to the atherosclerosis process and are risk factors for stroke. Objective : To determine the relationship between the severity of periodontitis and the degree of atherosclerosis in ischemic stroke. Methods : This is an analytic observational study with a case-control approach. Subjects were ischemic stroke patients with inclusion criteria. Analyzed the severity of periodontitis with Miller’s Mobility Index (MMI), the degree of progression of atherosclerosis assessed by measuring the CIMT using an ultrasound device or B mode to detect the presence and progression of atherosclerosis. Results : 54 subjects with a mean age were 63,43 ± 7,19 years, and the dominant sex was male. There was a significant relationship between severity of periodontitis  ( P : 0,011, OR : 3,425, CI 95% 1,332-8,807) and type of profile lipid triglyceride ( P : 0,027, OR : 6,840, CI 95% 1,242-37,676)  to Carotid intima media thickness. Conclusion :  There is an association between the severity of periodontitis and the degree of atherosclerosis. Severe periodontitis is related to the increases of CIMT, which is a marker of atherosclerosis, a risk factor for stroke.

Abstract

Introduction: Intelligence affects someone in thinking and solving problems. Frisson sensation increase dopamine hormone production, activity and blood flow to the brain. Aim: To prove the association between frisson sensations on music stimulus and intelligence performance change. Methods: A quasy experimental study with one group pre- and post-test design was done to female medical students of Diponegoro University. A total of 30 participants were selected by purposive sampling technique. The stimulation was by listening to mp3 of 5 researcher-selected songs that last for 15 minutes in 3 consecutive days. The frisson measured by using a stopwatch. Intelligence performance before and after the frisson sensation was measured using Ravens Progressive Matrices, so that the difference could be calculated. The collected data was then analyzed using Wilcoxon test and simple linear regression. Result: The pre-test score had a median of 50.50 (30-56) and a post-test score of 54 (33-59), with a significant increase in RPM scores (p less than 0.001). The duration of frisson sensation had positive effect on RPM scores differences (p less than 0.001). Association between the duration and the score improvement could be formulated as: y = 0.047 + 2,711x. Conclusion: The frisson sensation on music stimulus can improve intelligence performance. The frisson that lasts longer will have more significant improvement on intelligence performance
