Abstract

Adolescents are one of the age groups that are vulnerable to experiencing nutritional problems because they can determine their own lifestyle. Apart from diet, clean and healthy behavior is one of the indirect causes that influences nutritional status. Knowledge about clean and healthy living that teenagers have can determine their clean and healthy behavior attitudes and practices. Low clean and healthy behavior can be a risk factor for infectious diseases which can reduce nutritional status. This study aims to examine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes and practices of clean and healthy behavior and the nutritional status of adolescents. This research uses a cross-sectional study. The research was conducted in June-November 2023 at Al-Washliyah 1 Private High School, Medan City and Bandung Foundation High School, Deli Serdang Regency. The selection of research locations was carried out using purposive sampling. The research population was students in grades X to XII aged 14-18 years in both schools. The sampling technique used cluster sampling, the total subjects were 100 students from each school. Data was collected through questionnaire interviews in the form of characteristics, knowledge, attitudes and practices of clean and healthy behavior. Nutritional status data was obtained by directly measuring body weight using a digital scale and height using a microtoise and then determined using a z-score from the body mass index according to age (BMI/U). Data analysis was carried out using the Spearman Test. As many as 31% of teenagers have abnormal nutritional status (undernutrition, overnutrition and obesity). The bivariate test results showed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge (p=0.005), attitudes (p=0.001), and practice (p=0.000) of clean and healthy behavior and adolescent nutritional status. As many as 65.5% of teenagers with low clean and healthy behavior attitudes have abnormal nutritional status. Adolescents need to pay attention to clean and healthy behavior in their daily lives to help obtain good nutritional status. Keywords—Knowledge, Clean and Healthy Behavior, Adolescents, Nutritional Status

Abstract

Cervical cancer is one of the causes of death in women in Indonesia. Many studies have been conducted to determine the anti-cancer effects of natural ingredients. Pomegranate peel contains ellagic acid which has anti-cancer effects. In this study, the anti-cancer activity of pomegranate peel was examined against HeLa cell lines. Pomegranate peel was obtained from Malang, East Java, extracted using 70% ethanol. Cell viability and IC50 values were examined using the MTT test after incubation for 24, 48, and 72 hours. The percentage of living cells was calculated using a hemocytometer using Trypan Blue staining. DNA fragmentation was examined using electrophoresis as a marker of apoptosis activation. The IC50 value in pomegranate peel extract was at a concentration of 450 µg/ml. The results of the percentage of viability cells using hemocytomete at an IC50 concentration of 52%. Smears in DNA fragmentation examination were seen in samples incubated for 24 hours, indicating apoptosis activation. Pomegranate peel extract has anticancer activity against HeLa cell lines, with a mechanism involving apoptosis. This potential indicates that pomegranate peel extract can be further developed as a natural anticancer agent

Abstract

Background: Stunting, a condition where children fail to grow adequately for their age, is a significant public health issue in Indonesia. Health cadres play a vital role role as sources of information and knowledge for mothers of toddlers to prevent stunting. Objectives: To analyze differences in knowledge between Integrated Health Service Post (Posyandu) cadres and mothers of toddlers regarding stunting, and to examine the relationship between maternal knowledge of stunting and stunting incidence in children. Methods: This study was conducted in Medan Maimun Subdistrict, Medan City, from June to July 2024, using a cross-sectional design. A total of 68 cadres and 79 mothers of toddlers participated as respondents. Data were collected using validated questionnaires and analyzed using univariate analysis, independent sample t-test to compare knowledge levels between groups, And Spearman’s test to assess the relationship between maternal knowledge of stunting and stunting incidence. Results: Significant differences in stunting knowledge were found between health cadres and mothers of toddlers (p-value=0.003). Additionally, a significant relationship was observed between maternal knowledge of stunting and stunting incidence in children (p-value=0.034). Stunting incidence rates among children were 22.8% and 21.5%, respectively. Conclusions: Enhancing education and training for mothers of toddlers is essential to prevent stunting. The study also recommends strengthening the role of health cadres in delivering stunting-related education within the community.

Abstract

Background: Malnutrition during adolescence can slow growth and delay puberty. Adequate nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and behavior among adolescents are crucial to prevent health issues that can continue into adulthood. Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to balanced nutrition and nutritional status among adolescents at the Yayasan Bandung Senior High School, Deli Serdang Regency. Methods: The research design used was a cross-sectional design with a total of 80 adolescents aged 14 to 18 years at the Yayasan Bandung Senior High School, Deli Serdang Regency. The subject taking technique was stratified random sampling. Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of balanced nutrition were obtained through questionnaires. Height and weight data were analyzed using WHO Anthro Plus to determine the Z-score of Body Mass Index according to age. Data analysis used the Spearman test to determine the relationship between variables. Results: Most adolescents had good nutritional status, namely 68.8%, while the percentage of overnutrition and obesity was 18.8% and undernutrition was 12.5%. Adolescents have a high level of knowledge of balanced nutrition of 20 adolescents (25%). Balanced nutrition attitudes were categorized as high, namely 43 adolescents (53.8%), while high category balanced nutritional behaviors were only 6 adolescents (7.5%). The results of the bivariate test (Spearman Correlation) showed a relationship between attitudes and behavior-balanced nutrition (p<0.05). Conclusions: There is a relationship between attitudes and behavior of balanced nutrition in adolescence the Bandung Higher Education Foundation High School, Deli Serdang Regency.
