Abstract

Hearing loss is one of the health problems that can be caused by genetic factors, anatomical abnormalities, trauma to the ears and head, ototoxic drugs, and bacterial meningitis. People with hearing loss may have physical, intellectual, and mental limitations that can hinder daily activities and affect quality of life. Extraordinary School (Sekolah Luar Biasa/SLB) is the school that serves school-age children with special needs or those having a physical or/ mental disorder. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the degree of hearing loss and the quality of life of students with hearing disabilities at SLB Negeri Jember, Indonesia. This study used an analytic observational research design. The total number of samples in this study was 23 students who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, then an audiometer examination and a questionnaire survey were carried out. This study used the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PEDS-QLTM) questionnaire. The statistical test used was the Spearman correlation test. Interpretation of the results was considered to have a significant correlation if the p-value <0.05. The result of statistical analysis using Spearman's rank shows the relationship between the degree of hearing loss and the physical function of students with hearing loss at the SLB Negeri Jember shows a significance value of 0.184. The relationship between the degree of hearing loss and emotional function obtained a result of 0.005. The relationship between the degree of hearing loss and social functioning shows a significance value of 0.561. The relationship between the degree of hearing loss and school functioning showed a significance value of 0.016. The results were considered to have a significant correlation if the p-value <0.05. In conclusion, hearing loss was found not to have significant relationship with physical and social functioning in students with hearing disabilities at SLB Negeri Jember, Indonesia

Abstract

Milk is a highly nutritious food but easily contaminated by bacteria. Those bacterias could be pathogenic. Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella sp. are pathogenic microorganisms. Milk contamination which occurs during the milking process can come from various sources such as cow skin, udder, water, soil, dust, humans, equipment, and air. Escherichia coli is a fecal contamination indication. and the possibility of enteropathogenic or toxigenic microorganisms so E. coli is known as a causative agent for diarrhea and foodborne illness. Milking machine usage can reduce the total plate count, maintain udder health, and cow nipples, and improve milk yield, milk quality, and udder health. Indonesian dairy farming still does a lot of milking by hand. The aim of the study was to determine the differences in E. coli contamination in cow milk because of modern milking and traditional milking techniques in Jember Regency. This is observational analytic research using a cross-sectional design with a total sample of 26. The study was conducted in December 2018. Contamination of E. coli in milk was tested using the MPN method, confirmation test using EMB, and Gram staining. Data analysis using bivariate analysis with chi-square test. The results of the study found E. coli contamination in 84.6% of modern milking techniques and 100% of traditional techniques. The conclusion of the study was that E. coli contamination in cow's milk because of traditional milking techniques was greater than that of modern milking techniques, but the results were not significantly different.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is an urgent health issue that leads to one of the most significant cardiovascular complications worldwide, diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), which is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Chronic hyperglycemia and oxidative stress are major contributor for DCM. Analog rice based of MOCAF and corn starch is a functional food recommended as nutritional supplementation to replace staple foods in T2D patients. Analog rice has a high fiber content, high resistant starch and low glycemic index, which can help lower blood sugar levels and prevent DM complications. MOCAF in analog rice is also rich in phenolic compounds, which has potential effect of antioxidant. Metformin is the first line oral therapy for T2D. The present study investigates the potential effects of an analog rice diet in combination with metformin, for the development of DCM. Type 2 diabetic rats were induced by HFD/STZ method and was treated by analog rice and metformin for 4 weeks. Myocardial cell death measured by pyknotic nuclei percentage was analysed. The study result demonstrate that analog rice and metformin prevent the myocardial cell damage observed in type 2 diabetic animals, highlighting analog rice potential as adjuvant therapy, for treating DCM has no clinical significance than metformin therapy alone.

Abstract

Pediculus humanus capitis (P.h. capitis) is an ectoparasite which inhabits hair and scalp of human, causing a neglected disease called Pediculus humanus capitis infestation or pediculosis capitis. This disease, easily transmitted between people directly or indirect, often affects girls around 3–12 years old in tropical countries with high humidity. This can be avoided with applying personal hygiene focused on hair area (hair hygiene). Hair hygiene in this study was divided into several parameters, such as frequency of hair washing, shampoo usage, hair drying, towel sharing habit, comb and hair accessories sharing habit, head cover sharing habit, and close contact with an infested person. The aim of this study is not only to know the prevalence of P. h. capitis infestation, but also to determine the correlation between hair hygiene and P. h. capitis infestation among elementary school students in Sukorambi District, Jember Regency. This study was held around January to February 2024 using cross-sectional approach with total 83 respondents. Respondents were given several questions about parameters of hair hygiene and their hair was examined using lice comb to find P. h. capitis. Prevalence of Pediculosis capitis infestation among elementary school students in Sukorambi District reached 71.1%. Statistical analysis showed that towel sharing habit and comb and other hair accessories sharing habit had a significant relationship with P. h. capitis infestation (p-value <0.05). Multivariate analysis using logistic regression showed that comb and other hair accessories sharing habit were the most significant hair hygiene parameters.
