Abstract

Globalization is the global information spread and people interconnectivity. It is driven by technological developments in transportation and communication, removing cultural boundaries among nations. Cultural differences are increasingly less tangible and visible in all cultural products, including in fashion. Due to globalization, fashion brands that originate in a certain country can open stores across multiple continents. The invention of the Internet further widens their accessibility by consumers in any part of the world. However, globalization also brings an affordability gap between the upper and the lower classes. Nonetheless, fashion brands can also take advantage of this economic difference in appealing to their consumers. One of those brands is Supreme. Founded in 1994, it became the most sought-after hypebeast brand among street-fashion enthusiasts worldwide. How do they do it in less than 30 years is interesting to analyze. To answer this objective, this article is conducted from the cultural studies standpoint and the case study method. There are three formulas of positioning it adopts in order to grow globally: (1) the commodification African-American community, (2) the use of celebrity endorsement, and (3) the hype of limited-edition releases. Supreme sells oversized streetwear, heavily influenced by Hip-hop culture, a music genre rooted in the lives of African Americans. The brand makes use of celebrities, especially rappers, to endorse its clothes and accessories. It also continually makes headlines by releasing limited-edition products as well as collaborating with well-known figures and brands.

Abstract

This study explains the relationship between the Kardashians and the American dream that has been championed by Americans to date. It is hypothesized that the more popular culture develops in our lives, the more it will affect the development of our culture. This can be seen from reality shows as a kind of popular culture that many people love. To find out how big the influence is, this study uses the Kardashians as an object to see how they and their reality show influence the community. By using textual analysis and utilizing materialism and capitalism as the theory, this research is expected to reveal the impact of the Kardashians on the development of the American dream. This study takes several texts from the reality show and analyzes them according to the theory used. Then, it is found that technological progress and economic growth, including commercial TV, expose Americans to materialism. The Kardashians commodified it into a captivating moneymaker that reality TV viewers aspire and inspire to consume. In addition, the materialism that they display on reality TV shows also thrives in viewers' minds from which they take advantage by commodifying every aspect of their lives as a form of product to sell so that viewers buy what they advertise. Keywords: American Dream, Keeping Up with The Kardashian, Materialism, Capitalism.

Abstract

Colonization is a process of the colonizer who dominates the colonized people. The colonizer applies their rules to the colonized people. Colonized people unconsciously act these rules, copying the culture of colonizer people who were considered superior, showing their inferiority feelings to their original culture which is considered inferior, or even copying the colonizer's way of life. Imitating is a way to escape their repressed situation. The objectives of this research are: 1) to describe the scene of cultural identities of mimicry portrayed by Jay Gatsby in the film The Great Gatsby using Homi K. Bhabha's perspective, and 2) to explore the scene of cultural identities of hybridity portrayed by Jay Gatsby. This paper can be categorized into library research and applies the descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained through words, phrases, and sentences of events contained in The Great Gatsby Movie. The findings are: first, Jay Gatsby mimics the colonial culture and tried to apply it in his life. Second, the personality of Gatsby is a blend: a mixture of two different cultures is said to be a hybrid, and his personality is dominated by an eternal struggle.

Abstract

Paradox of the United States soft diplomacy through the American Indonesian Exchange Foundation (AMINEF) as a tool of cultural diplomacy amid increasingly restrictive immigration policies. While the U.S. promotes openness, multiculturalism, and international collaboration through programs such as Fulbright and the Community College Initiative, its stringent immigration policiesparticularly since the Trump era and beyond the pandemiccontradict the nations image as a defender of freedom and inclusivity. Using a qualitative, literature-based approach and critical discourse analysis, this research explores how soft diplomacy operates as a foreign policy strategy to sustain American cultural hegemony in Indonesia. The findings indicate that, despite restrictive immigration measures, AMINEF remains effective in fostering cultural diplomacy and enhancing the U.S. image in Indonesia. This paradox underscores Americas attempt to balance domestic priorities (security and nationalism) with global ambitions (cultural and political influence).

Abstract

The Russia-Ukraine war triggered a global fertilizer supply crisis, revealing the vulnerability of import-dependent agricultural systems. This study examines Indonesia’s policy response to the fertilizer supply crisis during the 2022 Russia–Ukraine war, focusing on the expansion of subsidies for urea and Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium fertilizers. The objective is to identify how Indonesia’s policy represents a Reformist trend – one of Holt-Giménez and Shattuck’s typologies – within the corporate food regime. Using a qualitative research method, the study draws on secondary data, including policy documents, government budget reports, and statements from international organizations. The findings show that Indonesia’s policy actions exemplify the Reformist trend within the corporate food regime, in which the state seeks to manage crises and maintain political stability without transforming structural dependencies.
