Abstract

Improving the quality of basic education in ASEAN remains challenging despite widespread teacher training initiatives. Reports from UNESCO and ASEAN (2016–2025) highlight the lack of contextualization in educational programs, leading to weak implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in classrooms. This study employed an Educational Design Research (EDR) approach to develop a conceptual model of culture-based learning in harmony with nature. The research was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 involved a comparative analysis of Indonesia’s Kurikulum Merdeka and Malaysia’s KSSR Semakan 2017, combined with classroom observations and interviews at two culturally significant primary schools: SD Model Aulady (Ciamis, Indonesia) and Sekolah Kebangsaan Sikuati (Sabah, Malaysia). Phase 2 focused on designing and validating a conceptual prototype integrating local wisdom—Kagaluhan (Indonesia) and Sumuku–Tagal (Malaysia)—into the SEA-PLM framework. Findings from Phase 1 revealed shared challenges, including limited pedagogical readiness, inadequate infrastructure, and weak integration of cultural and environmental content. In Phase 2, the resulting model successfully mapped local values into the four SEA-PLM domains: interconnectedness, environmental sustainability, equity and peace, and active global citizenship. The model was further supported with thematic learning materials and contextualized literacy assessments. The study demonstrates that regional contextualization through local wisdom can enhance the relevance and effectiveness of ESD implementation. The proposed model contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting a culturally grounded, student-centered, and sustainability-focused pedagogy for primary education across ASEAN.

Abstract

This study examines the spatial management traditions of the Kampung Kuta indigenous community in Ciamis, exploring the underlying cultural values and their implications for environmental sustainability. Using a qualitative descriptive case study approach, data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. The results reveal that Kampung Kuta’s spatial system is governed by local wisdom known as pamali, which functions as both a social norm and a spatial regulation. These rules dictate the use of natural materials for stilt houses and uniform settlement patterns that reflect simplicity and social cohesion. Furthermore, the strictly preserved sacred forest plays a vital role in maintaining ecosystem balance and water conservation. The study concludes that these traditions form an integrated socio-cultural and ecological system that serves as a model for sustainable spatial planning. Pamali operates simultaneously across normative, symbolic, and ecological dimensions, offering valuable insights for modern sustainable management.

Abstract

The Seren Taun ritual has long been recognized as one of the most enduring agrarian ceremonial traditions within Sundanese cultural communities. However, existing studies predominantly focus on its function as a harvest thanksgiving ritual and cultural preservation practice, while limited attention has been paid to the localized philosophical reinterpretation of the ritual within contemporary Islamic Sundanese communities. This study examines the symbolic meanings embedded in the Seren Taun ritual practiced in Pagerbatu Hamlet, Batulawang Village, Pataruman District, Banjar City, with particular emphasis on the negotiation between Sundanese agrarian cosmology and Islamic spirituality. Employing an interpretive ethnographic approach, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with seven key informants, and documentation. Data were analyzed using thematic coding and interpreted through the perspectives of symbolic anthropology and ritual theory. The findings reveal that Seren Taun in Pagerbatu functions not merely as an agrarian thanksgiving ceremony but as a symbolic arena where spiritual purification, ecological ethics, social solidarity, and localized Islamic religiosity are continuously reproduced. The ritual demonstrates a dynamic cultural negotiation in which ancestral cosmological values are reinterpreted within Islamic theological frameworks without eliminating their local symbolic structures. This study contributes to discussions on cultural resilience by demonstrating how local ritual traditions adapt to modern religious and social transformations while maintaining their philosophical integrity.
