Abstract

The purposes of this research are to (1) determine students' abilities in using word formation by using authentic materials provided. The instrument used to determine the student's abilities is MAT (Morphological Awareness Test); and (2) to determine the type and process of word formation contained in the authentic materials. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The results of this research, based on the MAT used, showed that the students’ understanding towards word formation process increased with the mean score was 83,26.  Meanwhile, the types of word formation found in the authentic materials were compounding, derivation, inflection, conversion, abbreviation, back formation, and initialism.

Abstract

The use of Online translation (OT) for doing English assignments is now inevitable. Teachers neither can prevent their students to use OT nor can supervise it when all of the learning process has been running online from home to home. Therefore, both teachers and students should bring out the advantages of OT to improve English competence and to reduce the disadvantages of using OT. This study is aimed to investigate the students’ perspectives of using OT for doing English assignments and to describe the advantages and disadvantages of OT. The study is presented in descriptive qualitative design. The data collection instruments are questionnaires and open-ended questions. The participants are 198 students of Information system department, University of Putra Indonesia YPTK Padang. The findings of this study showed that for about 80% of English students depend their English assignments on OT. Based on the EFL students’ perspective, the advantages of using OT are time saver and instant results and the disadvantages of using OT are inaccuracy in the results relate to cultural context, idiom, sentences with metaphor and pragmatic aspects for learning the structure of English language. The study proposes some ideas for teachers to teach their students strategies and guidance for using OT properly and to avoid making mistakes. Abstract

This research was aimed to find suitable criteria of English Materials appropriately needed by Information and Technology students. This evaluation process was used to find suitability between materials and criterion in language area, content and methodology. This research was evaluation research. Questionnaire, interview guideline, and analysis format were used to collect analysis data. The result of the data shows: (1) some of the criteria of English Materials appropriately needed in language area was already suitable with for students need. On the other hand, in writing and reading were still need improvement. (2) In language area, the suitability between materials and criteria were 58%. (3) In content, the suitability between materials and criteria were 42%. (4) In Methodology, the suitability between materials and criteria were 42%.

Abstract

Abstak: Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris para pengurus kelurahan dan kecamatan di Padang Timur terbatas, terutama dalam percakapan sehari-hari. Hal ini membuat komunikasi dengan pihak asing menjadi sulit. Tujuan dari PKM ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan percakapan bahasa Inggris bagi para pengurus Kelurahan dan Kecamatan Padang Timur para camat Padang Timur. Pelatihan dan dukungan percakapan bahasa Inggris melalui lokakarya interaktif. Mitranya meliputi 30 pengelola kecamatan dan kelurahan di Padang Timur. Evaluasi dilakukan melalui pre-test dan post-test. Keterampilan percakapan bahasa Inggris meningkat sebesar 80%, terbukti dengan adanya peningkatan rata-rata skor post-test dibandingkan pretest. Peserta juga mendapatkan kepercayaan diri dalam berkomunikasi sehari-hari dalam bahasa Inggris.Abstract: The English language skills of Kelurahan and Kecamatan administrators in East Padang are limited, especially in daily conversation. This makes communication with foreign parties difficult. The aim of this PKM is to improve the English conversation skills of East Padang sub-district and village administrators. English conversation training and support through interactive workshops. The partners included 30 sub-district and village managers in East Padang. Evaluation was conducted through pre-test and post-test. English conversation skills improved by 80%, as evidenced by an increase in the average posttest score compared to the pretest. Participants also gained confidence in communicating daily in English.

Abstract

Abstrak: Keterampilan berbicara bahasa Ing,gris merupakan kemampuan penting bagi siswa SMK Perhotelan, terutama bagi mereka yang akan bekerja di bidang front office. Namun, pembelajaran di sekolah sering kali masih berfokus pada teori dan kurang memberikan kesempatan praktik berbicara secara aktif. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan untuk memberdayakan siswa melalui pelatihan speaking berbasis aplikasi Python yang dirancang untuk melatih percakapan interaktif dalam konteks pelayanan hotel. Fokus dari pelatihan ini untuk meningkatkan soft skill siswa, terutama dalam hal komunikasi dan kepercayaan diri dalam berbahasa inggris. Kegiatan ini melibatkan 34 siswa jurusan Perhotelan yang mengikuti pre-test dan post-test, dengan 20 soal yang digunakan untuk mengukur peningkatan kemampuan berbicara mereka. Hasil analisis data menggunakan uji Wilcoxon menunjukkan nilai signifikansi < 0,001, yang berarti terdapat peningkatan kemampuan berbicara secara signifikan setelah pelatihan. Berdasarkan hasil posttest, kompetensi speaking siswa meningkat sebesar 17,5%. Hasil ini membuktikan bahwa penerapan teknologi berbasis Python efektif dalam meningkatkan kompetensi komunikasi siswa, serta relevan dengan kebutuhan dunia industri perhotelan.Abstract: English speaking skills are crucial for vocational high school students majoring in Hospitality, especially for those who will work in the front office. However, learning in schools often still focuses on theory and lacks opportunities for active speaking practice. This community service activity (PKM) aims to empower students through Python-based speaking training designed to practice interactive conversations in the context of hotel services. The focus of this training is to improve students' soft skills, particularly in terms of communication and confidence in speaking English. This activity involved 34 students majoring in Hospitality who took pre-tests and post-tests with 20 questions used to measure improvements in speaking skills. Data analysis using the Wilcoxon test showed a significance value of < 0.001, indicating a significant improvement in speaking skills after training. Based on the post-test results, students' speaking competency increased by 17.5%. These results prove that the application of Python-based technology is effective in improving students' communication skills and is relevant to the needs of the hospitality industry.
