Abstract

This article aims to examine the reason why India is continuing to maintain cooperation with Taiwan through the “Act East” policy, even though it has not provided high benefits for India? In order to answer the question, this article employed a constructivism perspective related to foreign policy analysis. In constructivism foreign policy analysis, ideas and identity are vital for the state. India's “Act East” towards Taiwan reflects some element of constructivism which encompass ideas, national identity and intersubjective means that influences preference, policy choice and state interest. The first, India’s “Act East” is an idea to revive strategic and historical relations with Taiwan. Second, the positive India-Taiwan intersubjective process formed a shared understanding based on the values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the norms. Third, the national identity as an emerging power puts India to coexist peacefully with Taiwan and maintain security as well as stability in the region.

Abstract

One of the subjects in the global environmental crisis study is how environmental changes create vulnerability among society, thus raising human security issues. The flood disaster in Kalimantan in January 2021 is a clear example that illustrates the impact of environmental change on human security. Furthermore, Indonesia's case is interesting because, amid the current environmental crisis, Indonesia still has an ambitious developmentalism agenda. However, Indonesia has also demonstrated environmental policies through an active role in environmental protection agreements at the international level, policy formulation at the domestic level, and implemented concrete actions such as corrective action plans. This paper discusses the contradiction between the developmentalism agenda and Indonesia's environmental protection policies in the era of President Jokowi. The author argues that amidst the environmental crisis and threats to human security, Jokowi's developmental agenda shows ambitious goals. However, at the same time, this agenda is not balanced with strong environmental protection measures. Therefore, the existing environmental protection policies and efforts are considered only as government efforts to legitimize the developmentalism agenda. Keywords: environmental crisis, human security, Indonesia, developmentalism, environmentalism Salah satu bahasan dalam kajian krisis lingkungan global adalah bagaimana perubahan alam dapat berdampak pada kerentanan masyarakat sehingga memunculkan isu keamanan manusia. Kata-kata kunci: krisis lingkungan, keamanan manusia, Indonesia, developmentalisme, environmentalisme

Abstract

Abortion has long been a controversial issue in Argentina. In the Criminal Law article 86 of 1921, the government only allows abortions to be performed in cases where the pregnancy is considered to endanger the life of the mother or when the pregnancy is a result of rape on a woman with mental disabilities. Restrictions on access to abortion result in high rates of unsafe and illegal abortions in Argentina, which increases the risk of maternal death and various other health and economic risks. The Ni Una Menos movement, which was born in 2015, became a turning point for the legalization of abortion in Argentina. Ni Una Menos successfully changed the orientation and tactics of the women's movement in Argentina, which previously focused on middle-class academia groups and political lobbying, into a movement of demonstrations and general strikes in the streets of Argentina. This movement went on to play a significant role in the enactment of rules regarding the legalization of abortion without conditions up to 14 weeks of pregnancy in 2020.

Abstract

This thesis examines how the sustainability discourse in the European Green Deal (EGD) and Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) policies reproduce postcolonial relations of domination in the palm oil trade between the European Union and Indonesia. Using a postcolonial approach, especially Edward Said’s thougths on orientalism, shows that the sustainability narrative built by the European Union is not neutral, but a hegemonic narrative with internal economic interests that strengthen the position of the West / Global North over East / Global South. Through discourse analysis of the EGD and RED II, it is found that the EU frames palm oil as a high-risk commodity by ignoring the social reality of producer countries. This indicates a hidden discriminatory practice in the sustainability discourse. This finding confirms that there is an active discourse in the EGD, which perpetuates global inequality, and strengthens the relations of domination between the European Union and Indonesia in the postcolonial era.

Abstract

Holsti dan politics of leverage H. Richard Friman.

Abstract

This study explores the underlying reasons behind Bangladesh’s preference for cooperating with the New Development Bank (NDB) over the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in addressing its national economic crisis. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach and the theoretical framework of the Global South and minilateralism, the research examines Bangladesh’s development policy dynamics and its response to economic and political pressures, particularly following the military coup in August 2024. The findings indicate that while IMF provides financial support, its conditionalities such as exchange rate liberalization, subsidy removal, and fiscal reforms have adverse effects on public welfare. In contrast, cooperation with NDB offers policy flexibility, equality among member states, and financing support for sustainable projects without structural intervention. This study highlights that NDB serves as a geopolitical tool that enables developing countries to assert economic sovereignty and advance South–South solidarity in the context of an emerging multipolar global economic order. The study suggests that Bangladesh’s engagement with NDB reflects strategic hedging, diversifying external partnerships to reduce dependency on Western-dominated institutions. This choice strengthens domestic policy autonomy, mitigates social backlash, and enhances bargaining power, while signaling alignment with alternative development financing models increasingly favored by Global South.
