Abstract

The aim of this paper is not to close the dots through the imposition of a single understanding. The author simply wants to highlight significant points of ‘contestation’ in the way we understand or even blur the boundaries between the religious and the political. This research uses a qualitative method that is based on a literature study. We conclude that there are multiple and sometimes competing understandings of terms such as religion, secularism, secularisation and post-secular that shape and are shaped by discussions about the relationship between religion, politics and public life. For future researchers, we suggest exploring the correlation between religion, politics and the public sphere more specifically in order to create a paradigm that does not corner one another so that there is no overlap in understanding these three elements.

Abstract

Scientific publication is a crucial stage in scholarly development, particularly in the field of Islamic family law. This article aims to analyze strategies for publishing scientific works in the context of Islamic family law research in international journals. The methodology used is descriptive qualitative through literature study with content analysis of scientific publication guidelines and policy documents from various international publishers. Research findings indicate that successful international publication in Islamic family law requires a systematic approach encompassing innovative topic selection, structured methodology implementation, utilization of interdisciplinary perspectives, and understanding the editorial process of target journals. Key challenges include language barriers, differences in academic traditions, and limited access to global research networks. Recommended strategies include international collaboration, research capacity development, and integration of Islamic values with contemporary approaches. This research contributes as a practical guide for Islamic family law academics in enhancing the visibility of their scientific work on a global scale. Keywords: international publication, scientific work, Islamic family law, research methodology, reputable journals

Abstract

This study critically examines the term Islam Nusantara as a key concept in Indonesia’s discourse on Islamic moderation. Nahdlatul Ulama popularized the term to articulate a form of Islam that integrates Islam’s universal values with local cultural contexts. This study aims to assess the conceptual precision of Islam Nusantara by analyzing its lexical and historical implications, given its expanding use across religious discourse, academic debates, and public policy. The study employs a qualitative approach grounded in lexical-semantic analysis and historical-conceptual inquiry. It draws on library research by conducting a critical reading of religious texts, organizational documents, public speeches, and academic literature that represent the pro-and-con debates surrounding Islam Nusantara. First, at the lexical level, the phrase Islam Nusantara contains inherent ambiguity because its grammatical structure permits an attributive reading—Islam that is Nusantaran—which can prompt audiences to interpret it as a particular variant or typology of Islam rather than as a designation of the geographic and cultural context of Islamic practice. Second, at the historical level, the narratives that sustain the term tend to treat Javanese–Malay Islam as the dominant representation of Islam in the archipelago, thereby obscuring the plurality of routes, agents, and Islamic traditions across Indonesia’s islands. Third, at the discursive level, Islam Nusantara functions primarily as a discursive strategy and a project of religious identity through which actors articulate Islamic moderation in the context of nationhood and globalization, rather than as a stable normative theological category. These findings underscore the need for conceptual caution in deploying religious terminology so that it does not generate semantic reduction or symbolic exclusion. The study’s original contribution lies in formulating a framework for terminological critique that positions Islam Nusantara as an arena of meaning negotiation between Islam’s universality and cultural locality, while opening space for the development of a concept of Islamic moderation that is more academically precise and historically inclusive.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenology of barzakh in the corpus of classical Sufism as a model of liminal postmortem experience and analyzes its implications for afterlife concepts in other religious traditions. The aim of this research is to explain how Sufi thinkers—particularly Ibn ‘Arabi, Suhrawardī, and al-Jīlī—understand barzakh not as a static space of waiting but as an imaginal realm with its own ontological structure, experienced through the imaginal consciousness of the human being. Employing a qualitative design grounded in narrative-phenomenological analysis, this study conducts an in-depth textual examination of Sufi works and interprets their imaginal narratives as manifestations of transformative consciousness. The findings reveal three main points. First, barzakh is conceived as an ontological imaginal reality in which the subtle body, liminal space, and postmortem forms manifest through al-khayāl al-muttaṣil as the medium of the soul’s experience. Second, barzakh functions as a moral mirror in which one’s deeds, intentions, and inner states become objectified into imaginal landscapes directly encountered by the soul, thereby dynamically shaping its postmortem existential environment. Third, the comparative analysis demonstrates structural parallels between the phenomenology of barzakh and intermediate-realm concepts in non-Islamic traditions—such as Bardo Thodol in Tibetan Buddhism and Olam Ha-Ba in Judaism—which similarly exhibit liminal experiential patterns involving transformations of consciousness, the subtle body, guidance by transcendent entities, and reflective imaginal spaces. This study contributes to the expansion of esoteric Sufi studies by employing a phenomenological approach that interprets barzakh as a structure of experience rather than merely a theological doctrine. Moreover, it offers a new hermeneutical framework for interreligious dialogue by highlighting shared patterns of transitional consciousness across afterlife traditions. The originality of this research lies in its integration of phenomenological analysis with comparative afterlife studies, demonstrating barzakh as a universal archetype of transformative human experience.

Abstract

This study examines the juridical and theological implications of apostasy (conversion from Islam) within marital bonds in the Indonesian legal context through a comprehensive comparative analysis with international jurisprudence. The research aims to analyze the legal status of marriages post-apostasy by exploring the intersection between religious law principles, state legal provisions, and international human rights frameworks. Using a normative juridical approach with qualitative analysis, this study examines legal materials from 45 religious court decisions across five Indonesian provinces (2018-2023), statutory regulations, and comparative theological perspectives from scholars in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Egypt, Turkey, and Malaysia. The findings reveal a complex legal dichotomy between theological principles that generally consider apostasy as automatically dissolving the marriage bond (fasakh) and the Indonesian positive law requiring formal judicial processes. This study identifies four distinct patterns in religious court decisions: immediate dissolution upon apostasy, conditional dissolution requiring a waiting period (iddah), maintaining the marriage's validity until formal divorce procedures, and a progressive maqasid-based approach that prioritizes human rights protection. The novelty of this research lies in its integrative framework that synthesizes classical Islamic jurisprudence with contemporary human rights discourse, demonstrating how religious courts negotiate between theological imperatives, constitutional protection of religious freedom, and emerging international standards. The research contributes to legal scholarship by proposing a reformulated legal framework based on maqasid al-shariah principles that balances religious authenticity with protection of civil rights, particularly for women and children affected by marriage dissolution due to religious conversion.
