Abstract

Chlorophyll-a in waters is one of the important factors that determines the primary productivity/fertility of waters. Chlorophyll-a measurements can be carried out in two ways, namely conventionally by direct measurements in the field and modernly by using remote sensing technology. The aim of this research is to determine variations in the distribution of chlorophyll-a in the waters of the Ombai Strait. The data used in this research is monthly level 3 climatology data from 2003–2022 from the Aqua-MODIS (Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellite using a remote sensing and geographic information system approach. The results of this research were that the highest chlorophyll-a concentration was found in coastal areas and the lowest concentration was found in offshore waters. According to the monthly distribution of chlorophyll-a, the highest concentration was recorded in July with values ranging from 0.251-10.486 mg/m3 with an average of 0.566 mg/m3 and the lowest concentration was recorded in November with values ranging from 0.158-2.151 with an average of 0.427 mg/m3.

Abstract

One of the fish handling techniques needed to maintain fish freshness is the cold chain application. Cold chain system is very important to be applied in the post-catch handling process to extend the fish rigor mortis phase. Fishermen and fishmongers are people who play an important role in maintaining fish freshness. The purpose of this study was to determine the fresh sardine organoleptic quality after catching until reaching consumers or initial selling. The method used is a survey method through on board direct fish handling activity observation conducted by fishermen and fishmongers at selling locations, as well as fish organoleptic tests using score sheets for fresh fish with observations based on transit time starting from fishing vessel after catching, collectors, fishmongers to the first consumers. Organoleptic quality measurement of sardine taken from fishmongers in Atapupu waters showed that sardine quality fitted for consumption with an organoleptic value of >7.

Abstract

The utilization of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in fisheries represents one of the most attractive and effective methods for increasing fishermen's catches. This review article aims to evaluate the use of FADs in enhancing sustainable catch outcomes and considers their role as an effective management tool. Various types of FADs have been designed and developed across different waters in Indonesia. There are several types of FADs commonly observed, including Squid FADs, Bio FADs, Sea urchins FADs, Electronic FADs, Bamboo raft FADs, Coconut leaf attractor FADs, Palm fiber attractor FADs, Light attractor FADs, FADs palm midrib, Rafia rope attractor FADs, Lubuk larangan FADs, and Fiber FADs. This paper reviews the different types of FADs, considering aspects such as the catch produced, technical specifications, and economic factors. Among these, portable FADs constructed from coconut leaves and raffia lines as attractors emerge as particularly effective and commonly used in Indonesian waters. FADs are also often combined with lift nets or electric fish attractors to enhance their effectiveness. Environmentally friendly fishing gears such as handlines and fishing rods are commonly operated around FADs. The types of fish caught typically include a mix of small and large pelagic species.

Abstract

Abstract

A fish collection vessel is a vessel specifically used to transport fish including the process of loading, holding, storing, cooling, and preserving fish on board. This research was conducted at the Mayangan Coastal Fisheries Port (PPP) with the aim of determining the characteristics of the types of fish catches collected at KM. Lautan Berlian-99 which were landed at PPP Mayangan. This research was conducted from September to November 2024 at PPP Mayangan using a qualitative method where data collection in this study was collected through the observation method, namely by directly observing the landing of fish at PPP Mayangan. The identification results showed ten types of fish that were successfully caught by fishermen from various fishing gear including purse seines, bottom longlines and drift nets. The fish were then put into the hold of the collection vessel by the transhipment process to be taken to the port. The measurements to be used are standard length measurements with units of cm. The measurements carried out include total length, half body length, tail length, eye height, body width, head width, and eye width.
