Abstract

The development of technology meets the needs of new ways in teaching language. This study aims to identify the aspects of the multimedia appeal of learning developed; to find out the attractiveness of students in vocabulary learning by using multimedia; to develop vocabulary learning for English language education students by using multimedia. This study was conducted by using research and development study. The subjects of the study consisted of 28 students in English Language Education Program. The instruments were questionnaires, observation guidelines, and test. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical techniques. The results of this study are: (1) the quality of multimedia learning developed in terms of aspects of content, learning, display, and programming is good. By using a score range of 1 to 5, the content aspect shows an average score of 3.75, the learning aspect shows an average score of 3.71, the display aspect shows an average score of 3.87, and programming shows an average score of 3, 75; (2) the aspect of attraction shows that the multimedia learning developed is very interesting: twenty students showed very attractive product appeal, eight students showed attractive product appeal; and (3) the use of multimedia learning English vocabulary has a good impact on the students’ vocabulary learning: of 28 students, there were 27 students (95%) who completed vocabulary learning in English Language Education Program

Abstract

This development research is specifically carried out in order to compile an English learning material for students of Sharia Business Management study program, but focus on the conventional economic terminologies. The research method used is the adoption of product development steps by Sugiyono. Analysis of two aspects, namely target needs and learning needs, was developed into a research instrument in the form of a questionnaire to measure listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The results of the data analysis indicate that in the preparation of a language development learning material, it is necessary to emphasize direct practice of the ability to use foreign language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). In addition, Cooperative Learning is considered the most effective method.

Abstract

Reading material that is contextually and academically appropriate for students' needs is an important component of teaching English. In reality, some of the reading material used by the lecturer is inadequate for the needs of the students. This research developed reading material that contextually applies to Islamic colleges and is appropriately suitable for students’ knowledge. To achieve the aims, the research design was a research and development (R and D). The respondents of the research were 52 students of the English Teaching Department STAIN Mandailing Natal. They were chosen to use a technique called purposive random sampling. As part of the research procedures, it carried out five phases: (1) conducting a need analysis with the student, (2) designing reading material based on Islamic values, (3) developing reading material based on Islamic values. (4) obtaining expert opinions on the validity of reading material (5) determining the feasibility of reading material. The research findings show students need reading material that covers: Islamic context in their reading materials since they study in Islamic-based campuses and stay in most Islamic-society regions. Then, students need reading material that is suitable for students’ knowledge level for text, illustration, pictures, even the example of reading material. The students also need an Islamic vocabulary in reading material, which may use them to apply in daily life. Expert validated this model of reading material and it yielded as valid and practical to be applied in reading subject specifically for English Teaching Department students of STAIN Mandailing Natal. After conducting dissemination to students for the practicality, this reading material is practical and applicable to be used for reading subjects. We can state that this reading material applies to lecturers and matches students’ needs appropriately.

Abstract

Self-efficacy plays an influential role in iniating any action  including reading especially in online learning. Reading comprehension, along with all other language skills, has become a big concern in ELT, while self-efficacy is a pyschological aspect that affect the learners’ success in mastering the skill. In this regard, this study attempts to find out whether EFL learners’ self-efficacy affects the learners’ reading comprehension in Universitas Pembinaan Masyarakat Indonesia. The study applied correctional study with quantitative design. Participants in this study were 50 learners of English Education Department. A self-efficacy questionnaire (SEQ) and reading comprehension test were applied to the participants as parts of the correlational research model. The collected quantitative data were analyzed by Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program. The finding shows that the result of r-calculation for learners’ self-efficacy and their reading score is .765. The score of significance level is < 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05) which means that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. This score indicates that there is a positive correlation between the two variables.

Abstract

Tulisan mahasiswa dalam teks berbahasa Inggris masih sering ditemukan kesalahan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk megetahui kesalahan bahasa Inggris yang terdapat pada karangan deskripsi mahasiswa Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Semester 4, Universitas Pembinaan Masyarakat Indonesia Tahun Akademik 2021/2022. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian deskriptif dengan model pendekatan kualitatif. Sumber data pada penelitian ini diambil dari 28 teks deskripsi bahasa Inggris mahasiwa. Data penelitian ini adalah kalimat-kalimat yang mengandung kesalahan tatabahasa yang kemudian dianalisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan tiga kesalahan berbahasa yaitu 1) kesalahan Subject Verb agreement, 2) kesalahan tanda baca dan huruf kapital, dan 3) kesalahan keberterimaan.. Berdasarkan wawancara, faktor penyebab kesalahan pada karangan deskripsi responden yaitu pengetahuan tata bahasa Inggris yang terbatas.Kata Kunci: Kesalahan; Gramatikal; Deskripsi, teks Bahasa Inggris

Abstract

Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan komunikasi Bahasa Inggris siswa madrasah Aliyah di Kota Padangsidimpuan dengan menggunakan aplikasi HelloTalk. Tim dalam PKM ini terdiri dari 3 orang dosen dan 2 orang mahasiswa Tadris Bahasa Inggris STAIN Mandailing Natal. Pengabdian dilaksanakan pada bulan Desember 2022 dengan melakukan 3 kali kunjungan/pelaksanaan ke MAN 1 Padangsidimpuan dan MAN 2 Model Padangsidimpuan. Kunjungan kegiatan yang pertama adalah observasi dan pengambilan data, kunjungan yang kedua adalah pelatihan penggunaan aplikasi dan terakhir adalah monitoring dan evaluasi hasil. Metode yang digunakan dalam PKM adalah Participatory Action Research (PAR). Hasil dari pelaksanaan program adalah meningkatnya kemampuan Bahasa Inggris siswa madrasah. Mereka menggunakan aplikasi untuk berkomunikasi secara langsung kepada penutur asli dan menggunakan aplikasi ini untuk belajar membaca teks, mendengarkan dan pelafalan. Secara keseluruhan, pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini berjalan dengan sangat baik ditunjukkan dengan siswa sangat antusias dalam mengikuti sosialisasi dan dalam pelaksanaan penggunaan aplikasi. Program ini telah memberikan warna baru pada pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang dianggap cukup sulit bagi siswa.

Abstract

Innovative teaching approaches that encourage active learning are becoming more and more popular in the ever-changing educational landscape. One such paradigm that has attracted a lot of interest is co-creation, an educational strategy that stresses student engagement and collaborative learning. This study aims to investigate the implementation of co-creation in teaching Basic Grammar, Basic Writing and Translation. Then, this research also aims to analyze the effect of the implementation of co-creation in the classroom. The study utilizes qualitative research methodology and was conducted at STAIN Mandailing Natal, focusing on students enrolled in the English Language Education Program. Data was collected through focus group discussions, observations, and interviews. The findings highlight various co-creation techniques used, such as peer feedback, collaborative projects, and grammar prompts, which have resulted in positive outcomes for students, including increased engagement, collaboration, autonomous learning, and critical thinking skills. Overall, the incorporation of co-creation in the classroom has enhanced the academic experience for students in the English Language Education Program. Further exploration is recommended to understand its full potential and applicability across different educational settings and subjects. Besides, future researchers could focus on quantifying the effects of co-creation on student outcomes and delve into potential challenges and solutions in its implementation.

Abstract

This study investigates using co-creation strategies and AI tools to improve translation skills among English Education students at STAIN Mandailing Natal. Sixty students shared their experiences with Peer Review, Collaborative Translation Projects, and Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) Tools. The feedback highlighted areas for effective AI integration. Consequently, researchers proposed using AI for real-time feedback in Peer Review sessions, facilitating communication in collaborative projects with AI project management tools, and enhancing predictive text features in CAT Tools using advanced machine learning. After several months of implementing these methods, a post-test showed significant improvements: accuracy rose by 20%, fluency by 15%, and appropriateness scores by 18%. Confidence levels also increased across all translation aspects. The study shows that integrating AI within co-creation strategies enhances both hard skills (translation abilities) and soft skills (teamwork & confidence), improving overall learning outcomes.

Abstract

Gender-based violence in Indonesia is increasingly concerning, despite the existence of numerous laws and regulations aimed at its regulation. This violence significantly impedes development, as its multifaceted impact hinders women's participation, compromises health, and diminishes autonomy across political, economic, social, and cultural spheres. The research addresses several key questions: 1) What is the extent of legal protection against gender-based violence in Indonesia? 2) How is gender-based violence addressed within Islam? 3) How can legal protection against gender-based violence be optimized from an Islamic perspective? The research methodology is qualitative, using a normative approach and drawing from secondary sources like literature accessed through library research. Data analysis is conducted through descriptive analysis techniques. The findings of the research indicate that in Indonesia, legal protection against gender-based violence is addressed through various regulations, and similarly, within Islam, there have been numerous reforms pertaining to gender-based protection found in the Quran and hadith. Strategies like theological education, moral guidance, gender equality promotion, and family development with a gender perspective can enhance legal protection against gender-based violence in line with Islamic principles. Aligned with these findings, the article emphasizes the vital importance of preventive measures to reduce the rise of gender-based violence.

Abstract

The crime of child neglect by drug abusing parents is a serious problem that has significant social and humanitarian impacts. In the perspective of Islamic criminal law, the act of child neglect caused by drug abuse by parents is considered an act that violates sharia law and is detrimental to the welfare of society. Analysis of the crime of child neglect by drug abusing parents from the perspective of Islamic criminal law involves interpreting the principles of Islamic law relating to the protection of children's rights, parental obligations, and sanctions for violations of the law. In Islam, parents have a great responsibility to care for, educate and protect their children, and the act of child neglect caused by drug abuse is a serious violation of this obligation. From the perspective of Islamic criminal law, the criminal act of child neglect by drug abusing parents can be classified as an act that harms society and contradicts the principles of social justice. As a result, the perpetrators of such criminal acts may be subject to criminal sanctions in accordance with the applicable sharia law, which may include fines, corporal punishment, or other penalties appropriate to the severity of the offense. However, in applying punishment to perpetrators of the crime of child neglect by drug abusing parents, the Islamic criminal law system also considers mitigating factors such as the intention, psychological condition, and social environment of the perpetrator. Principles such as mercy, justice, and restoration are also upheld in Islamic law enforcement, which allows room for rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society. Thus, the analysis of the crime of child neglect by drug abusing parents from the perspective of Islamic criminal law emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the welfare of children and upholding social justice in society. Law enforcement based on the principles of Islamic law can provide a strong basis for protecting children's rights and ensuring that perpetrators of criminal acts are given sanctions that are balanced and beneficial to the common good.
