Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a health problem that often occurs in society. Uncontrolled hypertension can trigger degenerative diseases such as heart disease and kidney failure. One of the therapies used to lower blood pressure is Ambon banana and sweet star fruit therapy. Subjects and Method: Research on elderly men suffering from hypertension in the Tarus Community Health Center working area used a Quasi-Experimental pretest–posttest with a Control Group research design. The number of samples in this study was 20 elderly men using a simple random sampling method. The dependent variable in this study was blood pressure, while the independent variable was the administration of Ambon banana juice, sweet star fruit juice, and a combination of Ambon banana juice and sweet star fruit juice. The measuring instrument used in this research is a questionnaire. The data analysis used in this research is Anova and Post hoc. Results: The average blood pressure in the elderly decreased after being given Ambon Banana Juice, Sweet Starfruit Juice, and a combination of Juices. The greatest reduction in blood pressure occurred in the group given Ambon banana juice (Mean= 140 mmHg; p=0.002), compared to sweet starfruit juice (Mean= 148 mmHg; p= 0.036), and these results were statistically significant. The juice combination also reduced the average blood pressure, but the results were not statistically significant (Mean= 156 mmHg; p= 0.454). Conclusion: The average blood pressure in the elderly decreased after being given Ambon Banana Juice, Sweet Starfruit Juice, and a combination of Juices. Abstract

Abstract

The amount of organic waste continues to increase along with the growing population and changing consumption patterns. This will impact the rise of greenhouse gases and the decline in environmental quality. Therefore, community service activities aim to provide education on processing organic waste into useful and environmentally friendly products in the form of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) and bokashi as an effort to mitigate environmental pollution. The educational activities are conducted using the participatory rural approach (PRA) method, where participants are directly involved in the production of LOF and bokashi. The activities are divided into four main stages: observation, training and mentoring implementation, and activity evaluation. The target of community service is the Betlehem Oesapa Barat congregation, which is organized into the Bethlehem Farmers Group consisting of 25 people. The evaluation results show that community activities with the PRA approach have an effectiveness level of up to 96% in transferring waste management knowledge and skills to participants. This is supported by the change in knowledge about making LOF and bokashi from 8% before the educational activities to 92% by the end of the activities. About 96% of participants stated that the activities were beneficial to them, with 92% of participants wanting to independently implement the results of the activities. The follow-up to these activities includes continuous monitoring and evaluation, as well as further development related to the use of LOF and bokashi in the horticultural cultivation of the farmers' group. Additionally, efforts will be made to expand the reach to the congregation and community by the community service team of the Postgraduate program The University of Nusa Cendana in order to create a society that is aware and cares about the environment and actively participates in mitigating waste pollution in the future.

Abstract

Herein, fluorescent carbon nanodots (C-dots) with average diameter of 5.51 nm were fabricated from black sticky rice by using carbonization method. These C-dots have been synthesized with magnesium (Mg2+) ions to investigate their potential application as probes for detection Mg2+ ions. The as-obtained C-dots were measured their absorption (Abs), photoluminescence (PL), and FTIR spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image. According to their Abs spectrum, the Abs peak at 276 nm confirmed the presence of C-dots in ethanol solution. Fortunately, the PL peak at 427 nm corresponded to their blue emission color. The XRD patterns and the TEM image confirmed also the formation of amorphous state and monodispersed spherical C-dots, respectively. When the as-prepared C-dots were synthesized with Mg2+ ions, the PL intensities of C-dots quenched as increasing the concentration of Mg2+ ions. A characteristic PL quenching of the C-dots through Mg2+ chelation demonstrated the sensing system up to the detection limit of 2.98 µM. This is the first reporting the application of C-dots as sensors for detection Mg2+ ions. These findings can pave the large opportunity for application of these C-dots in sensing, bioimaging, drug delivery, and so on.
