Abstract

Cemara Jaya in Wasile District has the potential for developing the livestock sector, especially cattle. However, breeders face several obstacles, that is, feed is abundant in the rainy season and less in the dry season. In addition, several community-owned cattle had low body condition scores and thus, an effort is needed to increase livestock productivity through appropriate counseling and training. This service activity aimed to empower the community through training in fermented feed processing in Cemara Jaya Village, Wasile District, East Halmahera Regency, in June-August 2024 using a participatory learning and action (PLA) approach. The stages consisted of location surveys and problem identification, training and practice, as well as monitoring and evaluation. This service activity was successfully attended by 10 breeders. This training activity began with the delivery of materials related to good cattle management, and continued with the introduction and practice of fermented feed processing. In general, this service activity had a positive impact on breeders, because they become more understanding and skilled in cattle farming, especially in the use of forage into fermented feed to increase the productivity of their livestock. Farmers were also able to practice processing fermented feed independently. It can be concluded that this service activity is able to empower farmers while increasing the knowledge and skills of farmers, especially how to process fermented feed.

Abstract

Ternate City is the economic and trade center in North Maluku, where the agricultural sector ranked third as the main field of community employment after the service sector and processing industry. One of the community groups serving as a gathering place for breeders in Ternate is Lembaga Mitra Peternakan (LMP) located in Sasa and Jambula Villages. The problems faced by goat breeders in LMP include: the difficulty of getting superior males to mate with females, low livestock productivity due to inbreeding, the difficulty of getting continuous forage so that goats only fed tofu dregs waste, and the accumulation of manure around the pen which can cause odors and has an impact on livestock health. Based on the farmer's problem description, it was agreed that a community service activity would be held with the aim of providing guidance to livestock groups in goat cultivation through the application of appropriate technology at the LMP in Ternate city. The stages included surveys and outreach, community education, demonstrations and training, as well as monitoring and evaluation. All activities were attended by around 15 breeders. Farmers actively participated in VBC practices, silage feed processing and organic fertilizer. The silage and organic fertilizer produced can also be used by farmers. Farmers were able to manage the VBC concept, making silage and organic fertilizer independently. After the training activities, there was an increase in the knowledge and skills of breeders in practicing and applying appropriate technology in goat cultivation.

Abstract

Abstract

Tukong chicken, also known as rumpless chicken due to the absence of a tailbone, is one of the indigenous chicken breeds in Indonesia currently at risk of extinction. Due to its scarcity, genetic information on the Tukong chicken remains limited, and its potential has not been fully explored. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the genetic external characteristics of the Tukong chickens. Data were collected from 205 chickens (52 males; 153 females) raised in Landak and Bengkayang Regency, West Kalimantan. The varieties are based on feather color, plumage color, feather pattern, feather flicker, comb shape, and shank color. The data were used to analyze the rate of the original gene, the frequency of autosomal genes, sex-linked genes, feather pattern, introgression rate, gene frequency, and expected heterozygosity. The majority of the Tukong chickens had colored feathers (88.78%), columbian feather type (47.80%), plain feather pattern (61.46%), silver feather flicker (54.63%), yellow-white shank (62.44%), and pea comb (77.07%), which were controlled by ii, ee, bb, SS, IdId, and P_ genes, respectively. The introgression rate from exotic breeds into Tukong chicken is 53.2%, with the original gene at 46.8%, while the average expected heterozygosity was 0.416±0.025, indicating a high level of genetic diversity of the traits. This observed variation in qualitative morphological characteristics might benefit both the conservation and utilization of the Tukong chicken.
