Abstract

This study aims to examine the pedagogical approaches used in teaching Mandarin to first-year students of the Mandarin Applied Bachelor Program at Universitas Prima Indonesia. The research method used is descriptive qualitative through classroom observation and interviews with teachers and students. The main focus of this study is to identify the learning methods applied, assess their effectiveness, and understand the challenges faced in the process of mastering the four language skills: listening (听 tīng), speaking (说 shuō), reading (读 dú), and writing (写 xiě). The results of the study indicate that the pedagogical approaches used include Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), scaffolding, direct method, audio-lingual, and grammar translation method. These approaches encourage active student involvement, improve understanding of language concepts, and create a communicative and collaborative learning environment. Several challenges are still found, such as the lack of variation in learning media, less conducive learning time, and differences in student motivation levels. This study suggests the integration of interactive digital media and project-based learning approaches as solutions. The novelty of this study lies in the reflective integration of classical pedagogical approaches with the practical needs of business communication in the global era, as well as the direct mapping between learning time, student sitting position, and level of learning enthusiasm, which have not been widely explored in the local context of Mandarin learning in Indonesia.

Abstract

The utilization of digital technology is a key factor in enhancing the competitiveness of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the global economic era. This community service research aims to empower MSME actors in Sumber Rejo Village, Batubara Regency, North Sumatra, through the optimization of digital marketing as a means of business communication. The partners consist of 26 MSMEs producing "keripik pisang gosong" (caramelized banana chips) and "emping" (melinjo crackers), who previously relied on conventional marketing methods. The implementation method utilized a participatory approach, including needs identification, technical training (content creation, social media management, and e-commerce registration), and intensive mentoring for 1.5 months. The results show a significant increase in digital literacy and technical skills among participants. A total of 18 MSMEs successfully expanded their market reach outside the region and reported a 15-30% increase in sales. Despite facing challenges such as limited internet access and technological adaptation issues among older participants, the program successfully laid the foundation for digital transformation in rural areas. In conclusion, the sustainable integration of digital marketing strategies and the formation of local digital communities are essential to maintain business consistency. This program recommends infrastructure support from the local government to support the sustainability of the MSME digital economy in Batubara Regency.

Abstract

The rapid growth of digital technology and social media has significantly transformed global communication, including the use of Mandarin. Platforms WeChat, Douyin, and TikTok have accelerated linguistic change and fostered the emergence of Mandarin internet language. This study examines its main linguistic characteristics, formation processes, sociocultural drivers, and implications for academic, social, media, and educational contexts. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected from the three platforms and analyzed through phonological, morphological, semantic, pragmatic, and sociolinguistic perspectives. The findings reveal distinctive features such as pinyin-based abbreviations, numerical homophones, phonological wordplay, morphological innovation, and expressive hyperbole. Digital neologisms are shaped by linguistic mechanisms, meme culture, and social media virality, while their rapid spread is influenced by youth dominance, social competition, globalization, and online community identity. The study concludes that Mandarin internet language represents a natural linguistic evolution rather than degradation, reflecting cultural, technological, and generational changes in contemporary China.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to prove that modification of the interjection ‘Aiya’ [哎呀] at certain intonation signals a different attitude. As a result, this study focuses on the different emotional expressions that the Chinese word aiya might convey. Re-searchers employed recording methods with the PRAAT application. Furthermore, the researcher presented 40 respondents who were Mandarin students to give a direct as-sessment of the original and the manipulated interjection. The perception test is carried out by playing five interjection utterances without telling the respondent which sound is the initial utterance. The first sentence has the results of happy emotional attitudes. When it is raised and lowered to 4 semitones, there is a balanced variation of emotions. However, when it was raised to 8 semitones, the test results show an emotional attitude of disappointment, and when lowered to 8 semitones, showed an emotional attitude of impressed. An increase of one tone point can create a positive impression. Then, if there is a decrease, it will make a negative impression. However, because of the vast variation in everyone's perception, generating these conclusions is still impossible. This is where the suggestion appears for future researchers to continue this research and make this research a reference.
