Abstract

This pilot research objective is to investigate the rhetorical structure of an introduction section of scientific articles written by tertiary students of social and humanity studies. The research method used is qualitative, which applied purposive sampling in collecting the data. Four journals from Talenta Publisher were selected based on several characteristics, such as socials and humanities discipline, English articles written by undergraduate and post-graduate students, and published in the last two years (2019-2020). The data analysis used an interactive model by applying data collection, condensation, display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The Creating Research Space (CaRS) model used for data analysis is to describe the rhetorical structure of the introduction section in the articles. The results of this research stated that Move 1 Step 2 (making topic generalizations), with a percentage of 31%, is identified as the dominant rhetorical structure. On the other hand, move 2 Step 1c (question-raising) and Move 3 Step 3 (indicating article structure) are not realized in all data. In conclusion, the majority of authors do not follow the standard rhetorical structures of a scientific article. Some of these journals have not applied rhetorical structure, which is an important thing that must be followed, such as Move and Steps, which consists of components: background of the study, research gap, problem statement, and research aim

Abstract

This study investigates the role of writing prompts to create appropriate introduction section in research article. The study analyzes three texts generated from ChatGPT by using three distinct prompts formulated based on the writing prompt model proposed by Kroll Reid, and Chapman. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the resulting texts were analyzed at the macro level to determine the realization of rhetorical moves. The findings indicate that prompt design significantly affects the quality and rhetorical completeness of the Introductions. Prompt 3, which contained more explicit instructions regarding gap identification and research significance, produced a text most closely aligned with all three moves of the CARS model. In contrast, the more general prompts led to partial or less structured realizations of the rhetorical elements. These results suggest that structured and genre-sensitive prompts can effectively guide writers when they seek Artificial Intelligence (like ChatGPT) assistance in writing research article. This study also highlights the pedagogical potential of prompt-based writing as a strategy to support academic writing instruction in higher education especially with the combination of newest technology.

Abstract

This study analyzes the 2024 U.S. presidential election debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris using the Interpersonal Function framework, specifically Exchange Structure (Move) from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The analysis identifies five Move patterns: "K1", "K2^K1", "K1^K2F", "K1^K2F^K1F", and "A1", along with one dynamic move pattern: Challenge and Response to Challenge (CH-RCH). The findings reveal that Donald Trump adopts a more authoritative and responsive stance in the debate, frequently assuming the role of Primary Knower (K1) to assert his knowledge and authority. He is more engaged in responding to challenges (RCH) rather than initiating them, indicating a focus on defending his credibility. In contrast, Kamala Harris actively challenges (CH) Trump's statements, often taking the Secondary Knower (K2) role by questioning or scrutinizing his claims before asserting her own position. However, she also assumes the Primary Knower (K1) role at times to establish her authority. Trump's debate strategy is centered on defending and reinforcing his credibility, while Harris employs a more confrontational approach, challenging Trump's assertions to cast doubt on his statements. This study contributes to the understanding of power dynamics and interactional strategies in political debates through an SFL-based discourse analysis.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the pedagogical approaches used in teaching Mandarin to first-year students of the Mandarin Applied Bachelor Program at Universitas Prima Indonesia. The research method used is descriptive qualitative through classroom observation and interviews with teachers and students. The main focus of this study is to identify the learning methods applied, assess their effectiveness, and understand the challenges faced in the process of mastering the four language skills: listening (听 tīng), speaking (说 shuō), reading (读 dú), and writing (写 xiě). The results of the study indicate that the pedagogical approaches used include Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), scaffolding, direct method, audio-lingual, and grammar translation method. These approaches encourage active student involvement, improve understanding of language concepts, and create a communicative and collaborative learning environment. Several challenges are still found, such as the lack of variation in learning media, less conducive learning time, and differences in student motivation levels. This study suggests the integration of interactive digital media and project-based learning approaches as solutions. The novelty of this study lies in the reflective integration of classical pedagogical approaches with the practical needs of business communication in the global era, as well as the direct mapping between learning time, student sitting position, and level of learning enthusiasm, which have not been widely explored in the local context of Mandarin learning in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Exploration of heroism and queer identity in literature is important for understanding today's values and emotional experiences. While many traditional stories focus on physical strength and bravery, there is a lack of research on how these ideas can be redefined through emotions and vulnerability. This study looks at Madeline Miller's The Song of Achilles, specifically how the story, told from Patroclus's viewpoint, changes the usual ideas of what it means to be a hero. Using a qualitative approach with close reading and textual analysis, the research shows how love and emotional connections are seen as heroic qualities. The main finding is that true heroism includes empathy and selflessness, challenging outdated masculine ideals. In conclusion, the study suggests that Miller’s fresh take encourages readers to adopt a broader view of heroism, highlighting the importance of emotional depth in our understanding of human experience.

Abstract

This study explores the redefinition of heroism and queer identity in Madeline Miller's The Song of Achilles, highlighting its importance in contemporary literature. While previous research focuses on romantic and queer elements, it often overlooks how the novel systematically challenges traditional views of heroism, especially through emotional vulnerability and mentorship. Few analyses examine how Miller critiques conventional ideas of heroism by emphasizing compassion and self-acceptance. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and close reading, this study examines key themes such as love and emotional connections. The findings reveal that true heroism is rooted in these connections rather than physical strength, showing how the bond between Achilles and Patroclus reflects empathy and community. Ultimately, Miller's work encourages a broader understanding of heroism, suggesting it includes the courage to embrace one's identity, enriching discussions in literary studies and beyond.
