Abstract

The examination of grieving archetypes in contemporary American novels is crucial for understanding the cultural myths surrounding emotional expression, particularly the stereotype that "men don't cry, women do." This study addresses the gap in literature regarding the portrayal of gendered grief by analysing Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones." This research uses a descriptive analysis method and semiotic approach to investigate how characters' grieving processes reflect and challenge traditional gender norms. The findings indicate that male and female characters exhibit intuitive, instrumental, and blended grief patterns, thus subverting the conventional stereotypes. This study concludes that literary depictions of grief contribute to the broader cultural narrative and influence perceptions of gendered emotional expression, highlighting the need for a more nuanced understanding beyond simplistic stereotypes.

Abstract

This study analyzes James Michener’s Hawai’i to underline how the environment was changed, altered and transformed over time based on differing paradigms of conceptualizing nature and environment. It primarily focuses on how the Native Hawai’ians, American settlers and Chinese immigrants have contrasting ways of perceiving the more-than-human world. The stages of environmental history, as underlined by Worster and Cronon argue how the differing paradigm is intertwined within the cultural contexts and socio-historical circumstances of a particular ethnicity in Hawai’i. Their paradigm manifested through social reproduction resulting from the mode of production, either instrumentalising or respecting the land. Moreover, race, social status and gender also problematize how the environment is conceptualized. From the perspective of environmental history, the environment is positioned as dynamic and changing, contrary to a prior depiction of nature as passive and static. The finding suggests that environmental perspectives in the novel Hawai’i can provide an avenue to reinterpreting human and non-human relationships by considering humanity as part of the natural world.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how deeply ingrained common sense can become as a hegemonic tool of the dominant group, normalizing and naturalizing ideas to the point where they feel like accepted and indisputable realities that can guide actions and thoughts, while also influencing social interactions and identity formation of subaltern groups. This study uses qualitative and descriptive analysis methodologies within the theoretical framework of Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony, it is centered on the novel The Sellout by African-American author Paul Beatty that focuses on the interactions and characters in the novel to see how common sense acts as a hegemonic tool that upholds the beliefs, values, and viewpoints of dominant groups. The researcher discovered around forty-two instances of the concept of "common sense" function in the novel The Sellout. However, the total may surpass this figure based on broader interpretations. The researcher picked nine cases that were most pertinent to the research aims of this article. This study found that the novel The Sellout, when analyzed using qualitative and descriptive methods in the context of Antonio Gramsci's approach, successfully captures the function in which common sense acts as a hegemonic tool for upholding the beliefs, values, and viewpoints of dominant groups and, as a result, can influence social dynamics and personal identities

Abstract

This article applies Claude Levi-Strauss' structuralism to examine how child oppression is symbolically encoded in H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine (1895). Focusing on binary oppositions such as Eloi versus Morlocks and light versus darkness, the study identifies narrative patterns that construct Eloi as infantilized, passive beings and the Morlocks as dominant, adult-like predators. Through the analysis of syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships among key narrative units (mythemes), the novel reveals a mythic structure of vulnerability and domination. By interpreting these structural patterns, this study offers a focused reading of Wells’ portrayal of power, dependency, and systemic exploitation within a speculative future society.

Abstract

This study examines Cho Nam-joo's Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 through the lens of implicature, focusing on how implied meanings function within the narrative. Drawing upon Grice's theory, the analysis identifies instances within the novel where underlying meanings contribute to the reader's understanding of characters, relationships, and social dynamics. The research explores various types of implicatures, including conventional and conversational, to reveal how they shape the reader's interpretation of events and motivations. Examples include instances of indirect communication within the family and broader societal contexts. The analysis extends to the workplace, revealing how implicatures in the novel expose unspoken assumptions and biases. By decoding these implicatures, the research aims to uncover the subtle yet pervasive ways language enriches the narrative. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how literary texts can use implicature to create nuanced meanings and engage readers on multiple levels.
