Abstract

Background: The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence, distribution and association of developmental alteration in tooth number with gender, location, and presence of delayed eruption of tooth among children who attended to Student's polyclinic of IIUM Kuantan, Malaysia. Methods: A cross sectional study on total 727 Orthopanthomograms (OPGs) of 3-17 years old children from April 2009 to July 2012. OPGs with presence of alteration number were scrutinized to find out the prevalence, distribution and association. The data was analyzed comparing gender, location and presence of delayed eruption and tested using Chi-square test. Results: Out of 727 OPGs, 71 OPGs showed developmental alteration in tooth number. The prevalence was 98/1000 OPGs within 3 years. Among those 71 OPGs, the gender differences were: males (49.3%) and females (50.7%). Locations were found in maxilla (45.1%), mandible (40.8%) and both (14.0%). The finding of delayed eruption was (7.0%). There were significant differences between alteration in tooth number with location as (p < 0.05) while there were no significant differences with gender and delayed eruption as (p > 0.05). Conclusions: This study showed that hyperdontia was considerably lower than hypodontia. There was association between alteration in tooth number with location, but no association with gender and delayed eruption.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Stunting is one of the growth and development problems that causes a child's body to become shorter or very short in accordance with his/her age and exceeds the Standard Deviation (SD) set by the World Health Organization (WHO), namely < -2 SD. The condition of stunting also inhibits the development of the oral cavity which causes children suffering from stunting to be more susceptible to caries. Caries experienced by children will have a negative impact on a child's daily life and can affect the quality of his/her life. This research aimed to analyze the relationship between caries status of a child with stunting and his quality of life. Methods: The type of research used was a quantitative the descriptive research with correlational research method using correlational survey method with questionnaires conducted in Ciapus Village, Banjaran District, Bandung Regency. Samples were taken using purposive sampling technique with a sample size of 60 people. The time range used in this research was December 2023 – January 2024. The questionnaire used was The Early Childhood Oral Health Questionnaire. The Impact Scale (ECOHIS) was used to measure quality of life and the def-t index was used to measure the child's caries status. Results: The def-t index of stunted children in Ciapus Village was 6.46 which was considered as high in the category. Total percentage of ECOHIS questionnaire answers showed a value of 46.41% and was in the category of quite impactful. The results of the Spearman rank correlation calculation = 0.475, which meant that there was a fairly significant relationship. Conclusion: There is a weak relationship between oral health related quality of life and caries conditions in the oral cavity of stunted children, because poor quality of the child's oral cavity does not have a direct impact on the occurrence of caries.KEYWORDS: stunting, caries, children's quality of life, children's oral healthHubungan Oral Health Related Quality of Life dengan Karies pada Anak Stunting: studi deskriptif ABSTRAKPendahuluan: Stunting adalah salah satu permasalahan tumbuh kembang yang menyebabkan tubuh anak menjadi lebih pendek atau sangat pendek tidak sesuai dengan usia nya dan melewati Standar Deviasi (SD) yang ditetapkan World Health Organization (WHO) yaitu < -2 SD. Abstract

Background: Adolescents are considered good cadres to be able to socialize with this healthy dental behavior. Therefore, designing a dental health education program is necessary to prepare adolescents to socialize with dental health behavior. Purpose: This study evaluates the pilot training for trainers using persuasive communication to socialize dental health behavior. Methods: Thirty-five participants (13-16 years old) are trained by a persuasive communication coach and practice the skills with a simulated client”this one-day training has a two-phase structure; lectures and practicum. The evaluation is done through three out of four-level methods from Kirkpatrick (1959). The data analysis used for the reaction evaluation is descriptive statistics, calculating the average score per category of training support assessment items (curriculum, facilitator, accommodation, and overall score). The learning outcome analysis resulted from an analysis of the pre-post test results using the N-Gain value and paired T-test. Behavior outcomes were also analyzed descriptively by calculating the average score of all participants in every timeline (baseline and two weeks after the training). Results: evaluation of this training revealed that "reaction” has an average total score was 4.02, which shows that the participants were satisfied with the training, "learning” has an N-Gain acquisition of 48.28%, and "behavior” level shows a good outcome as an increased in points from 3.4 to 4.2. Conclusion: The training program produced thirty cadres ready to implement the program in the community.

Abstract

Introduction: Most of the mentally retarded children may not brush their tooth correctly. They need parents or caregivers to help and supervise the tooth brushing process to reduce the accumulation of dental plaque which may lead to oral diseases. This research was aimed to analyse the most effective toothbrush between parents’ toothbrush and regular toothbrush on children with mental retardation. Methods: This research was quasi-experimental with the blind method. Twenty-nine students with mental retardation consisted of boys and girls of YPLB Cipaganti Special Needs School-C (SLB-C) were selected with total sampling. Each individual was divided randomly and being given the parents’ toothbrush and regular toothbrush. Parents were responsible for brushing their children’s teeth during the period of the study. Plaque scoring was performed on the seventh day. The wash-out period was initiated after the seventh day for one week. Each group was given a different toothbrush from their first toothbrush, and the plaque scoring was performed on the first and seventh day. Plaque scoring was assessed using the Greene Vermillion Index. The data obtained were tested with the Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: An average difference of plaque index before and after using parents’ toothbrush was 0.3, and the average difference of plaque index before and after using a regular toothbrush was 0.4. There was no significant difference in plaque index changes between these two toothbrushes (p-value > 0.05). Conclusion: Two types of toothbrushes, which are parents’ toothbrush and regular toothbrush are able to reduce plaque.
