Abstract

This study aims to examine the extent to which native-speakerism (NS) is embedded in the comments responding to a YouTube video entitled “Salah Kursus Bahasa Inggris?- Seleb English” by a YouTuber named Sacha Stevenson. The researchers believe that native-speakerism, an ideology that creates a power imbalance favoring native speakers of English over nonnative speakers of English, is present in the video, in which the content creator scrutinizes Indonesian people’s English accents. However, this paper focuses on the comments responding to the video, since they can show to what extent NS is adopted by EFL speakers/learners in Indonesia. The data was retrieved using YouTube Data API and Python programming language, sorted using Microsoft Excel, and categorized by applying three reading steps into four levels which spans from 0 (no indication of native speakerism) to 3 (strong indication of native speakerism). The findings are presented descriptively and analyzed within the theoretical framework on NS. The results suggest that NS is present in the observed comments on all four levels, which suggests how deeply embedded the NS ideology within the community of Indonesian English language learners and speakers. Suggestions on how to counter this ideology are presented in conclusion.

Abstract

This study examined the translation techniques used in the comic Pyramid Game from English to Bahasa Indonesia. As digital media continues to evolve, digital comics have become an increasingly valuable medium for fostering reading interest and promoting literacy. This study employed a qualitative method to analyze the translation of 15 English sentences from the digital comic into Bahasa Indonesia, selecting sentences from Part 1 to Part 10 based on their linguistic complexity and relevance to the Indonesian context and culture. The findings identified various translation techniques, highlighting their importance in conveying meaning while addressing cultural and linguistic nuances. The study also illustrates how different translation techniques were chosen and applied based on the context of each sentence. This research provides valuable insights for students at Universitas Terbuka and other interested readers, particularly in the field of translation studies, by exploring the diverse strategies applied in translating various materials.

Abstract

Taboo language within the Malay Bangka community acts as a social boundary that regulates behaviors, preventing discomfort or negative outcomes. This study explores the underlying codes and principles behind the use of taboo language in this community, using Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory (1995) to discuss Cognitive and Communicative Principles. The primary data comes from the Bangka Malay community across Bangka and South Bangka Regencies, while secondary sources include various literary works. Data were gathered through listening (simak), interviews (cakap), and document analysis, and were examined using six steps of qualitative analysis. Triangulation was applied to ensure validity, with discussions involving traditional Malay culture experts (Lembaga Adat Melayu). The results of the study suggest that, based on the Cognitive and Communicative Principles, speakers use ostensive stimuli (i.e. particular signals or cues that are deliberately used to indicate that someone is trying to convey information), such as coded phrases like "nanti bengkak kemaluan" (your genital may swell), to guide listeners toward the intended message, ensuring optimal relevance. Additionally, urban myths, often attributed to supernatural forces like ghosts, are employed to reinforce the consequences of disobedience. From the lens of Relevance Theory, these phrases are effective, as they require minimal cognitive effort for listeners to understand and process the speaker’s message.

Abstract

English language skills of students are an important part of the quality of student learning in schools. This is considered important to support student competence as competent human resources in facing global progress. However, the low average English language score index still occurs in several schools, including Sekolah Alam Pangkal Pinang. Based on this, a Workshop on Developing Innovative Learning Models for Teachers and Implementing Innovative Learning Media was held by implementing more creative, innovative, and progressive learning models and methods at Sekolah Alam Pangkal Pinang. This activity was carried out using the service learning method through four stages of implementation, starting from investigation, preparation, action, and reflection. The results of this service implementation were the implementation of innovative learning models and methods by English teachers at Sekolah Alam Pangkal Pinang with improved learning outcomes based on the evaluation results carried out by the service team.

Abstract

On the basis of a detailed study of the applicative phenomenon in the Belitong language done by Darmawan and Kaldina (2022), this paper suggests its symmetrical treatment specifically in terms of NP’s relativization strategies. Through the descriptive-qualitative research method, this paper identifies and describes the most accessible relativization strategies in Belitong as derived from applicative constructions. The data were collected through elicitation, unstructured open-ended interviews, and document analysis of previous literature works on the Belitong language. The data analysis process proceeded by employing qualitative data techniques and a careful linguistic typological approach, RG. The results of this study showed that: (1) A gap strategy is employed in direct relativization, and it accommodates the revaluation of core arguments (S and O), (2) indirect relativization allows the application of the passivization strategy on object properties of applicative constructions. Interestingly, two types of passives are permissible to account for indirect relativization. In type 1, the advancement of an O as the head of RC causes the demotion of the initial S to chômeur, morphologically marked by the prefix de- preceding the verb. However, in the passive type 2, the base subject does not reside in chômeur, yet it becomes the subject of the main clause with no prefix appearing on the verb.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation techniques and overall quality of the Indonesian subtitles in the film Purple Hearts, with the novel of the same title serving as a secondary source. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method using documentation as the data collection technique. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawaing with verification. Out of 125 identified subtitle segments, modulation was the most frequently applied technique (32%), followed by adaptation (17,6%), and literal translation (12%), while reduction was the least used (1,6%). The assessment of translation quality, based on Nababan dkk. (2015), shows that the subtitles are generally of good quality, with 72% accuracy, 76% acceptability, and 68% readability. Overall, the subtitles are considered accurate and natural, though some inconsistencies slightly affect the overall quality. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of audiovisual translation studies and serve as a practical reference for improving subtitle translation quality in Indonesia
