Abstract

This academic paper explores the influence of Basic Design Fundamentals (BDF) education on the creative process of fashion design students in Surabaya, Indonesia. BDF education, rooted in the principles of design, serves as a foundational element in various design disciplines, including fashion. The study employs a mixed-method research approach, combining quantitative Likert scale assessments and qualitative interviews with ten students from the University of Surabaya's fashion design program. The research reveals that BDF education significantly enhances the creative abilities of fashion design students in Surabaya. The majority of participants strongly agree that BDF education positively impacted their creative process, resulting in more visually appealing and well-structured designs. Moreover, BDF education empowers students to strike a balance between creative intuition and systematic thinking, fostering innovative design solutions. However, some participants suggest the need for a more direct application of BDF principles to fashion design projects to bridge the gap between theory and practice effectively. Overall, this study underscores the vital role of BDF education in nurturing creativity and problem-solving skills among fashion design students in Surabaya. The findings offer valuable insights for curriculum development, emphasizing the potential benefits of integrating theoretical design principles with practical applications, thereby enhancing the quality and competitiveness of fashion design graduates. Future research may explore the broader applicability of these findings across diverse cultural and educational contexts.

Abstract

It is a challenge for the designer and user in compromising a perfect fit of fashion. This study addresses the awareness of users and development of two different methods for the fitting of a fashion product. The first one, it is an individual anthropometric measurement, whereas the second one is assisted anthropometric measurement. Based on the Focused Group Discussion (FGD), it showed that the virtual fashion technology was perceived as something new and prospective in the future fashion industry. Through the virtual prototyping using CLO3D, it was found that the result had relatively the same as the manual measurement. The virtual one has reduced measurement and lead time significantly. In other words, the virtual measurement is deemed to be a time-saving process, promoting “fitting the product to the user” principle. This study supports a good communication bridge between users and designers through the 3D virtual clothing process, and also contributes to Indonesian anthropometry updates.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze and compare the persuasive communication strategies used by Sejauh Mata Memandang and Stella McCartney on the Instagram platform. Through a qualitative approach, this research found that the two brands have different approaches in applying the AIDA model. Stella McCartney tends to use a more direct and transactional approach with an emphasis on calls to action (CTAs) to drive sales, while Sejauh Mata Memandang focuses more on building brand awareness and emotional connections with the audience through visually rich content with cultural elements and in-depth storytelling. This difference reflects the different target audiences and marketing objectives of the two brands. The implication of these findings is that fashion brands can adopt a variety of persuasive communication strategies on Instagram, depending on their marketing objectives and target audience. Brands with a global target audience and direct sales objectives can take a more transactional approach, while brands with local target audiences and long-term goals can focus on brand building and emotional connections. Further research is needed to explore the relative effectiveness of these different strategies in achieving brand marketing objectives.
