Abstract

This paper documents the voluntary conservation practices in Patra Seroja Ecopark Forest by Indonesia’s state-owned oil and gas company, Pertamina Ltd. - Refinery Unit II Dumai, Province of Riau, west coast of Sumatera Island. The company voluntarily allocated, financed, and managed 102 hectares of land in their private area to conserve and protect its in-situ biodiversity and preserve environmental service as a secondary objective. The results of studies and assessments carried out, the management application has fulfilled the Privately Protected Area (PPA) management criteria by IUCN regarding the orientation, biodiversity, management model, and utilization. However, PPA is not recognized legally as an addition to traditionally government-led governance of conservation forests in Indonesia: KSA (Nature Reserve Area), KPA (Nature Conservation Area), TB (Hunting Park) model. Considering the potential width of Privately Protected Area application in Indonesia to support national target achievement on Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and Aichi 11 Target and fostering the voluntary initiatives by private in conserving biodiversity, the state may recognize the practices and initiate the legal instrument for PPA application in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Effective CO2 sequestration (SC) in rehabilitated tropical forest depends heavily on species performance and competition dynamics. This study evaluates SC potential and interspecific competition of native lowland forest tree species in Bedegung Biodiversity Park, South Sumatra, Indonesia―an area rehabilitated since 2014 through collaboration between the South Sumatra Provincial Environmental Service, National Gas Company (PGN), and IPB University. Despite the rehabilitation efforts, early planting did not consider the planting distances (Lij), impacting tree density (Dx) and individual competition index (CIi)―factors directly influencing SC. From 2020 to 2023, monitoring of tree diameter, height, and Lij data collected within a 60 × 20 m permanent plot revealed a decline in Dx from 900 ind ha–1 in 2020 to 725 ind ha–1 in 2023, primarily due increased competition. The site’s average SC reached 69.91 tCO2 ha–1 y–1, lower than mature tropical forests due to stand age. Among all species, Bayur (Pterospermum javanicum) exhibited superior SC performance, sequestering 10.02 ± 6.98 tCO2 ind–1 y–1―well above the mean―and showing increased resilience, indicaed by 1/CIi from 0.62 to 4.38. These results highlight Bayur’s exceptional role in SC under competitive pressure. For enhanced SC outcomes, management interventions such as thinning, fertilization, remove the weeds, and removing dead trees are urgently recommended. Prioritizing species with high SC potential and adaptive performance, like Bayur, is essential for optimizing carbon gains in forest rehabilitation programs.

Abstract

Birds have a fairly wide living habitat, including water-falls. Curup Tenang is a waterfall tourism site which has a wildlife habitat suitable for birds. In The Curup Tenang tourism site, the number of visitors has decreased over years. Birds are one of the wildlife animals that have ecological values, potential tourism, and cultural values. The diversity of birds in this tourist location have not been recorded. Meanwhile, by increasing knowledge and data-bases regarding the diversity of birds in this area can be an addi-tional reference for the development strategy in the Curup Tenang tourism site so that it becomes a distinctive attraction for visitors. This study aimed to determine the diversity of birds that never been recorded before and to conduct a potential support of avitourism activities. The results of this study can be used as a guideline to study the potential of avitourism. The diversity of birds found in Curup Tenang consisted of forty-eight species belong to twenty-seven families, while three of them cited as protected bird species. This study concluded that Curup Tenang contains a high diversity of birds and it has a great potential to be developed into an attraction of tourism.
