Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to discover the reading ability of Science Department students of Teachers Training and Education Faculty-University of Riau. The design of this study is quantitative research. This study used reading TOEFL equivalent as instrument of this research which consist of 50 questions. The sample of this research is Science Department Students in the 2016 academic year, namely Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Math, and there were 266 students involved. The result shows that Physic department student gained the highest average score (73.68) and Math Department Student reached the lowest average score (68.74). This study concluded that the reading ability of Science department students of teacher training and education Faculty University of Riau in the 2016 academic year is in poor level. The implication of this research, it is suggested that the students need to improve their reading ability by doing practicing on comprehending of TOEFL reading materials.Key Words: Ability, Reading, Science Department Student

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed at exploring the correlation between interest in reading English texts and reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMAN Binaan Khusus Kota Dumai. A correlational research design was used in this research. Two classes cosisting of 60 students were chosen by using cluster random sampling. There were two data obtained in this research: the percentage of students' interest in reading English texts and their reading comprehension test score. The questionnaire was used to discover the students' interest in reading English texts while reading comprehension tests were used to acknowledge their reading comprehension score. The results showed that the r-obtained was 0.619 with the significant level at 0.05 which means that there was a correlation between interest in reading English texts and reading comprehension. The value of R square showed that the range percentage between interest in reading English texts and reading comprehension of the students was 38.3%. In other words, it was implied that the higher the students' interest in reading English texts, the higher reading comprehension scores they might get.Key Words: Correlation, Interest in Reading English Texts, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimedto determine the level of anxiety of English students in speaking English. The populations in this study werethe second year English Faculty FKIP Riau University students. Onthe implementation,the researcher used simple random sampling technique (n = 30). The data were collected by distributing a set of questionnaires adapted from FLCAS (Foreign Language Anxiety classroom Anxiety Scale) and designed by Horwitz et al., 1986. Based on the data analysis, it couldbe seen that their anxiety level is in the moderate category, with an average of 2 , 78. Specifically, the data analysis also showedthe level of student anxiety in each of its components, with an average at a moderate level with an average score of 2.80. Abstract

This study aims to find out how these students teachers define the concept of'professional teacher' before PPL, what are their expectations before attending the PPL, whatobstacles they encounter during the PPL, and what lessons they get during the PPL program.This qualitative study involved ten students of English Language Education as participants.They were selected through purposeful random sampling technique. Data were collectedthrough semi-structured interviews, a focused group discussion, and document analysis. Thecollected data is analyzed inductively with the help of the NVivo application. The results of thestudy showed that participants had an initial concept of professional English teachers beforethey embarked on their PPL program. Their concepts are in line with the professional teacherframework as stated in Law No. 14/2005 concerning teachers and lecturers. At the same time,all participants had high expectations for the PPL program in relation to their desire to becomeprofessional teachers. Participants also reported some of the obstacles or challenges they faced during the PPL, such as the difficulty of undergoing the teaching process and feeling too muchburden from non-teaching activities during PPL. However, at the end of the PPL, all of themclaimed to be quite satisfied with the process they had gone through. They claim to have learneda lot from PPL, among them, they have increasingly understood the complexity of the tasks andresponsibilities of a teacher.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the ability of the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP UR in understanding English poetry. The number of sample was 40 students of the fourth semester students of English study program FKIP UR which was decided by using the Cluster Random Sampling technique. The data were collected by administering written test where the students are obliged to write general and detailed meaning based on the given poetry. The students’ scores were scored by three raters and were classified into five levels of ability, which are very poor, poor, mediocre, good and excellent. Based on research findings, it was found out that the ability of fourth semester students was at mediocre level with average score of 60. Besides, it was also found that the students’ ability in the content aspect was higher than the language-structures aspect where the average score of contents is 3,03 while the average score of language-structures is 2,93. This research implies that the fourth semesters of English study program were able to understand English Poetry.Key Words: Study, Ability, Understanding, Poetry Mastery

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out the reading ability of the second year students of SMPN 6 Tambusai. The population of this research is the second year students of SMPN 6 Tambusai. The number of sample is 30 students selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument to collect the data was multiple choice test items with 30 questions. . Each text consist of 6 questions which cover the components of reading and the components of descriptive that is finding main ideas, finding restatements, finding meaning of difficult words, finding references, finding factual informations, and finding social functions. The data were analyzed by classifying them into five levels of mastery, such as excellent, good, avarage, poor, and very poor. Based on the findings this research, it was found that the students’ reading ability of the first year students of SMPN 6 Tambusai was in good level with the mean score was 62.05. The implication of this research is that the second year students of SMPN 6 Tambusai have a good ability in reading descriptive text.Key Words: Students’ ability, Reading, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this research is to identify the frequent translation techniques used by the translator in "Incredibles 2" movie. This research was a content analysis method as the research design. The data used in this research are the hard file subtitles from the "Incredibles 2" movie in both English and Indonesian subtitles. The researcher identifies half of the subtitles movie and uses translation techniques from Molina and Albir (2002). The researcher used four translation techniques from Molina and Albir (2002) for identifying the subtitles. They are amplification technique, borrowing technique, literal translation technique, and reduction technique. The data obtained by identified the subtitle, classified each data according to the translation technique, and calculated the percentage. The researcher found 459 data from 1147 data. The result shows that the frequent translation technique is literal translation technique with 181 data represent 39.43%. The other three translation techniques are amplification techniques with 45 data represents 9.80%, borrowing techniques with 107 data represents 23.31%, and reduction technique with 126 data represents 27.45%.Key Words: Translation Techniques, Subtitles, Content Analysis, Movie

Abstract

Abstract: This research concerned with the student’s knowledge on the polysyllabic adjective word stress placements of English Education Study Program Students. This research was a descriptive with quantitative approach. The research was conducted on English Study Program of Universitas Riau. The selected sample was Class of B English Study Program which consist of 34 students. The sample is selected by using cluster random sampling technique. Thirty-four students involved in this study were given the instrument of stressing test. The data were collected by using WhatsApp and Google Drive. The collected data were analyzed by three raters and the result were calculated by using Microsoft Excel. The results of this study shows that the ability of the Second-year Students of English Study Program on polysyllabic adjective words stress placements was categorized Very Good level with 86,79 of the total average score. Furthermore, the test result among 3 syllables and 4 syllables polysyllabic adjective words shows that the second-year students of English Study Program made many incorrect stress placements in 4 syllables words.Key Words: Stress, Polysyllabic Adjective words

Abstract

Abstract: This research investigates the types of code-switching between Indonesian and English and vice versa in Indonesian television advertisements. The limitation of this research was on the use of code switching cosmetic product which occurred in Indonesian Television advertisements. The technique used to collect the data was Documentary technique means reading, studying, and analyzing all the data. This research was conducted by using content analysis methodology, with the code-switching being identified, noted, analyzed and finally categorized into the framework developed by Hoffman who proposed the types of code-switching: intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching and tag switching. A data of 30 cosmetic advertisements are used in analyzing code-switching. The advertisements are gotten from some kinds of cosmetic brands, such as Emina, Fair and Lovely, Fit Me, Garnier, Emina, Lakme 9to5, Loreal Paris, Marina, Maybelline Poise, Pons, Purbasari, Vaseline, and Wardah. The result showed that the most frequently used code-switching form in Indonesian television advertisements was intra-sentential switching (83,33%), followed by inter-sentential switching (11,11%), and tag switching (5,56%).Key Words: Code-Switching, Types, Sociolinguistic.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the quality of summative test that wasconducted by the teacher at the eleventh grade of SMA Nurul Pekanbaru and wasconstructed as descriptive quantitative research. The sample consisted of 53 students inthe second semester of the academic year 2020/2021 and was selected by using totalsampling with the lottery method. Furthermore, the instrument of English final test thatconstructed in the form of 40 multiple choice questions was firstly identified andgrouped based on the classification of each domain of cognitive dimension according toBloom’s taxonomy revision that contained two levels namely HOTS (High OrderThinking Skills) and LOTS (Low Order Thinking Skills). Then, all students’ answerswere analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 25for windows to analyze the validity and reliability of the test. The result showed that thetest questions just obtained 50% of applying (C3), 27.5% of understanding (C2), and22.5% of remembering (C1) of LOTS levels whereas HOTS levels (analyzing,evaluating, and creating) weren’t even found. Furthermore, its reliability quotient wasjust 0.729 (lower than 1.00) with 3 (8%) items categorized as invalid questions, and thevalid items of 37 (92%) questions were predominantly classified in low interpretation.This research clearly showed that the test didn’t fulfill the qualification of a good test.Key Words: Validity, Reliability, Cognitive, Educational Taxonomies, Summative Test
