Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research is aimed at finding out whether or not there is any effect of using pictures in teaching vocabulary on the ability of the second year students of Islamic high school (MA) Muhammadiyah Pekanbaru. This research used one group pre-test and post-test design. In conducting this research, a single group from two classes combined from the second grade was selected to be a sample by using Total Sampling. There are 32 students as the sample. The results of this study shows that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (74.45 > 63.28). After analyzing the data, the writer found that t-test score was -2.924 while t-table score in significance level 5% df = 31 was 2.040. Since the value of the t-test was higher than the t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that “there is a significant effect of using pictures in teaching vocabulary on the ability of the second year students of Islamic high school (MA) Muhammadiyah Pekanbaru. Based on the research findings, writer suggested to use pictures because it can help the students improve their vocabulary ability.Key Words: Effect, Using Pictures, Vocabulary Ability

Abstract

Abstract : This study was aimed at describing the ability of the second year students of SMPN 4 Pekanbaru in using prepositions. The population of this study was all of the second year students of SMPN 4 Pekanbaru in the 2018/2019 academic year. The number of sample was 37 students who were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by administering a test to the students in the form of gap filling type which consisted of 40 items. The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score of the students’ ability in using prepositions is 76.55. It can be concluded that the ability of the second year students of SMPN 4 Pekanbaru in using prepositions was categorized into good level.Key Words : Study, Ability, Prepositions.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study was conducted by using One-Group Pretest-Posttest design to find out whether or not there is a significant effect of using ‘Six Thinking Hats Strategy’ on the ability of the second year students of SMP Telkom Pekanbaru in comprehending recount text. The sample of the research was 31 students of class VIII.b and obtained by using simple random sampling technique. 25 multiple choices of recount text was the instrument of the test. The students’ scores were analyzed by using Microsoft Excel 2010 and Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) 23.0 for windows. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (64.64>52.25). Then, it also showed that t-test was higher than t-table (10.51>2.04) at significance level of 5%. Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using‘Six Thinking Hats Strategy’ on the ability of the second year students of SMP Telkom Pekanbaru in comprehending recount text.Key Words: Effect, Six Thinking Hats, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed to analyze what syntactic errors made by the second grade students of SMK PGRI Pekanbaru in writing descriptive text. The populations were all of the second grade students of the school in the 2018/2019 academic year. The numbers of the samples were 30 students chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using written test. The data were analyzed by applying the rules of Corder (1974 in Barkhuizen, 2005) which consisted of five steps; 1) collection of sample of learner language; 2) identification of errors; 3) description of errors; 4) explanation of errors; and 5) error evaluation. Eight syntactic errors were found as the result of data analysis. They are: pronouns (25.9%), subject-verb agreements (22.7%), verb tenses and forms (14.5%), word orders (9%), articles (8.6%), prepositions (7.1%), plural nouns (6.7%), and passive voices (5.5%). The most frequent error made by the students were pronouns with a total of 66 errors (25.9%) and the least frequent error were passive voices with a total of 14 errors (5.5%). Based on the findings, there are three suggestions; 1) the students are suggested to be more concerned with the mentioned syntax items; 2) the teachers are required to give more attention regarding the students’ ability, to explain the lesson by using simple language, and to use various teaching methods in order to improve students writing abilities; and 3) future study is asked to conduct a research on the analysis of syntactic errors and the cause of the errors due to the limitation the of scope of this study.Key Words: Syntactic Error, Descriptive Text, and Writing Ability

Abstract

Abstract: This present study was aimed to find out wheter there was a correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability of the third year students of SMP Negeri 1 Kunto Darussalam. The population this research was the third year students of SMP Negeri 1 Kunto Darussalam. The sample was chosen by using cluster random sampling and there were IX 2 and IX 4 as the samples. Vocabulary test was used to know the students? vocabulary mastery whilespeaking test was used to know the students? speaking ability in describing place. The obtained data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment?s Formula usingSPSS 23.00 program. The results revealed that the coefficient correlation is 0.729 with a significant of 0.000. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. In conclusion, there was a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking ability of the third year student of SMP Negeri 1Kunto Darussalam. Abstract

This study aims to find out how these students teachers define the concept of'professional teacher' before PPL, what are their expectations before attending the PPL, whatobstacles they encounter during the PPL, and what lessons they get during the PPL program.This qualitative study involved ten students of English Language Education as participants.They were selected through purposeful random sampling technique. Data were collectedthrough semi-structured interviews, a focused group discussion, and document analysis. Thecollected data is analyzed inductively with the help of the NVivo application. The results of thestudy showed that participants had an initial concept of professional English teachers beforethey embarked on their PPL program. Their concepts are in line with the professional teacherframework as stated in Law No. 14/2005 concerning teachers and lecturers. At the same time,all participants had high expectations for the PPL program in relation to their desire to becomeprofessional teachers. Participants also reported some of the obstacles or challenges they faced during the PPL, such as the difficulty of undergoing the teaching process and feeling too muchburden from non-teaching activities during PPL. However, at the end of the PPL, all of themclaimed to be quite satisfied with the process they had gone through. They claim to have learneda lot from PPL, among them, they have increasingly understood the complexity of the tasks andresponsibilities of a teacher.

Abstract

Absract: This research aimed to find out if there is a significant effect of using PQ4R strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. This research took place in MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru, which was collected from February to March 2020. The try out class was VIIITQA2 class (19 students) and the sample was VIIIA3 (32 students) chosen by cluster random sampling. This is a pre-experimental research with one group pretest and posttest design. This research used quantitative data and the instrument used to collect the data was a reading test in multiple choice forms. As the result, the mean score of pre-test is 59.03 and post-test is 62.97. In the other words, the mean score of post-test is higher than the mean score of pre-test. The result also showed that the value of t-test (8.907) is higher than t-table (3.365) at the significance level 0.1%. It means that Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using PQ4R strategy on the ability of the second year students of MTs Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru in comprehending recount texts. It is suggested that in understanding recount text is one of alternatives, the teacher needs to focus on the students’ understanding of the sentences on the texts.Key Words: Effect, Reading Comprehension, PQ4R Strategy

Abstract

Abstract: The research was aimed to determine the effect of using 'RIDER' strategy on the ability of the second year students of SMPN 42 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. This pre-experimental research was conducted by using One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. Class VIII.2 was selected as the sample for this research by using cluster random sampling technique. A multiple choice test consisting of 40 items was the instrument of the research. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test. The results showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (74.24>61.84). Then, it also showed that t-test was higher than t-table (4.086>2.062) at a significance level of 5%. Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to find out the significant effect of using the power of two Strategy on the ability of the seventh grade students of SMP Babussalam Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. The selected sample was VII.4 class. The sample was selected by using random sampling technique. This research used pre-experimental research design for one group pre-test post-test and the data were collected by using on written test on descriptive texts. The instrument used in this research was multiple choice test consisted of four options “(A/B/C/D)”. The result of the study showed that the mean score of the pre -test was 63.04 while the result of the post-test was 79.16. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using the power two strategy on the ability of the seventh grade students of SMP Babussalam Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts. It can be stated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In conclusion, teachers are suggested to use the Power of Two as one of the alternative strategies in improving students’ comprehension of descriptive texts.Key Words: Effect, The Power of Two strategy, Comprehending, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out if there is a significant effect of using Collaborative Strategic Reading technique on the ability of the first year students of Madrasah Aliyah Muhammadiyan Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts. The research design was a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was the first year students in academic year 2019/2020. The sample was all the first year students (X IPA and X IPS) which consist of 35 students. The instrument used to collect the data was a reading test. The test consist of 40 items. The obtained data was analyzed by using SPSS version 23.0. The finding of the research showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test (76.00>70.03). The value of the t-test was higher than t-table (15.485>2.042) at 5% of significant level. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. This means that Collaborative Strategic Reading technique was effective for teaching reading comprehension concerning narrative texts. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using Collaborative Strategic Reading technique on the ability of the first year students of Madrasah Aliyah Muhammadiyah Pekanbaru in comprehending narrative texts. In other words, teaching reading comprehension through Collaborative Strategic Reading technique is an effective way to solve the students’ problem on the reading comprehension.Key Words: Effect, Collaborative Strategic Reading technique, Reading Comprehension
