Abstract

One of the significant elements of writing skills is cohesion. Cohesion is a concept that refers to the connection and smooth relationship between elements in a text or discourse. In the context of writing, cohesion is the ability to connect ideas, sentences, or paragraphs so that they form a coherent and easy-to-understand whole. Cohesion plays an important role in ensuring that a text has a logical flow and can be understood well by readers. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate cohesive devices found in graduate students' theses. It is the case that the language that is utilized the most frequently in print, electronic, and internet media is English. Writing in English is becoming an increasingly crucial ability, particularly in the academic sphere, as English continues to prevail as the universal language of choice for scientific research and publications. To comprehensively analyze how cohesive devices are utilized in the thesis text, the present study employs a qualitative descriptive method. Coding was used to analyze the data from the theses written by one graduate students. The categories of text and texture, cohesion, grammatical cohesion, and lexical cohesion were considered during the analysis. Based on the findings of this study, grammatical coherence was examined in eight sentences, while lexical cohesion was examined in four sentences.

Abstract

This research investigates the grammatical construction and common logical problems in argumentative essays produced by Master of English Education students at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. This study utilized a qualitative research framework and content analysis as the design. The data collection involves a detailed syntactical analysis, facilitated by Shang’s syntax tree generator, with the researcher actively engaged in the evaluation and categorization of grammatical and logical elements. The main arguments are identified, and connections to the overarching thesis are established. Systematic coding is applied to categorize findings, encompassing sentence structure, evidence usage, tone, logical connectives, cohesions, counterarguments, and identification of logical fallacies. Findings reveal notable technical errors in sentence construction, especially in constructing complex sentences. Moreover, difficulties in understanding the appropriate genre in argumentative writing and logical errors in expressing opinions and drawing conclusions are identified. This study discovered that students encounter difficulties in maintaining a coherent and logically sound progression of ideas throughout their essays.

Abstract

AbstractThe challenges of accreditation reviews create a sense of stress across academic institutions that can be significantly reduced when strategies are implemented and maintained. Understanding the purpose, value, and benefits of the accreditation process is critical. Two techniques that lead to accreditation success include ongoing program meetings resulting in assigned tasks that address government or commission evaluation standards, and the use of a program matrix. The article includes meeting strategies and a universally adaptable matrix design. Moving from stress to success is possible when the techniques are linked to all standards and subsections, and each task successfully meets accreditation requirements.
