Abstract

This study aims to explore the challenges of primary school teachers in teaching online English to young learners in the pandemic era and teachers’ views toward teaching online English. The teachers also provide the solutions to overcome the problems. This is a qualitative research that employs a case study as the approach. The data are obtained through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 20 English teachers of primary schools. The results show many challenges emerged from three sides: instructional activity, time management, and student assessment. Challenges of instructional activity cover students’ motivation, English levels of student proficiency, communication, cooperative learning, and teaching writing. Time management challenges include having a limited amount of time and providing feedback. Meanwhile, student assessments assess students’ attitudes and cognitive skills. This study suggests the administrators and authorities of education policymakers evaluate the guidelines to enhance the quality of online teaching, especially for elementary schools.

Abstract

This study investigates the types of directive speech acts employed by English teachers in online classroom interaction with their students. In addition, the study details the frequency with which teachers in the third grade of SD IT Widya Cendekia use directive speech acts in the context of online learning and classroom interactions. As a descriptive research method, this analysis was designed. The information gleaned from the English class video recording through the Microsoft team application as a learning tool. According to Yule's theory of directive speech act, video recordings were used to capture data for analysis. The study employed Miles and Huberman (1994) qualitative approach to data analysis. According to the findings of this study of teachers' use of directive speech acts in online learning contexts, only 7 of 62 directive utterances were classified as commands, nine as requests, two as suggestions, two as invites, and one as a warning. Besides, the request kind of directive is employed by English teachers in online classroom interactions at a significantly higher frequency than any other form of directive speech acts.

Abstract

This present study investigates gender representation in an EFL textbook in Senior High Schools by using multimodal critical discourse analysis. The data is collected from the unit contents of the English Textbook by Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia 2017, which is used for senior high school and vocational high school. The study uses qualitative with Fairclough's three-dimensional framework to analyze the data collected. The focus variables include the frequency of gender representation and women's and men's social and domestic roles. The finding revealed that the EFL textbook was biased, imbalanced, and unequal for the position of male and female; for the frequency of gender representation in pictorial, males dominated around 25.6%, and females were only 11.6%. Then for gender representation in the passage text, the male was dominated by 46.3% and female was 34.3%. Next, for gender representation in conversation text, the male-dominated was 51.8%, and the female was 38.8%. The last one is gender representation in exercise text, the male-dominated by 31.33%, and the female was 40.97%. For the category of gender's social and domestic role, it revealed that males tend to do a social role associated with higher education and knowledge. At the same time, female is related to the traditional view in society that is associated with social status and hype only. Therefore, the result showed that the gender representation in this textbook was not represented equally.

Abstract

Using Critical Discourse Analysis as an analysis tool, this study explores gender representation in the national EFL textbook “Bright: An English” for Eighth Grade Junior High School students, a book utilized in Al-Ikhlas Lambuya Junior High School’s learning and teaching process. Fairclough's three-dimensional framework was used to examine the data in this study. The study aims to see how gender roles are communicated and how gender equity is reflected in the textbook. To uncover the power imbalance or disparity between males and females, characteristics such as male and female visual representation, male and female characters, male and female social, domestic duties, male and female semantic roles, and activities were investigated. The research revealed a gender bias in favour of men in particular functions and activities, such as becoming an 'athlete,' engaging in social events, and participating in sports. On the other hand, female dominance is evident in that female students outnumber male students significantly. Nevertheless, the study discovered some equality in terms of pictorial representation, some activities, and roles. Although conventional roles and behaviours are associated with female and male genders in this book, all genders are equally portrayed in terms of social position, power, and domination. Furthermore, no ideology such as anti-feminism or masculinity is discussed in this text.

Abstract

The study analyzed the multimodality of the EFL textbook for elementary school students. A qualitative descriptive study has been employed to carry out this study. The source of the data is the textbook, namely Get Smart Plus. The data was visual and verbal elements within the textbook, including any text and images that explain each other. The study used the multimodal framework proposed by Krees Van Leuween’s visual grammar and Halliday’s transitivity system to analyze the data. The finding shows that the visual elements of the textbook contain representation, composition, and relational patterns. In addition, the dominant process in the textbook is the verbal mode of communication (42%). However, the material process based on the analysis of Halliday’s theory was not represented in the book. The visual and verbal elements relate to each other and can potentially support students’ learning and understanding of the content. Therefore, the textbook can be a multimodal resource for students’ English learning. This study hopes to benefit textbook developers and designers by improving the use of visual and verbal elements of the textbook to support students’ cognitive development. Further research can be conducted on the impact of textbook multimodality on students’ learning achievement to contribute more to the study of discourse. Abstract

This study aims to discover the switching and mixing code types and their functions that are dominantly used in student online discussions. This research was designed in descriptive-qualitative method by using video recordings and interviews from Pragmatics class of postgraduate degree students as the data sources. The obtained data were then analyzed using Miles and Huberman model of analysis by involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students frequently switched and mixed codes during the discussions. In this case, ode mixing was dominantly occurred compared to code switching. There were 78 occurrences of code changes in total, with the proportions of 44 mixings and 34 switchings. Dealing with the types, insertion code mixing was found to be the mostly used in the discussions whereas intersentenential switching becomes the least. The phenomena of code switching and mixing in the classroom discussions has various functions, i.e.: for communication strategy, for delivering the meaning, for making clarification of the information, for defining specific terms, and for increasing understanding. This study also reflects the students' positive attitudes toward using switching and mixing codes in classroom discussion activities. It is recommended for further research to ensure the appropriate strategies for the teachers in switching and mixing codes for both offline and online classes.

Abstract

Abstract. The real challenge in 5.0 society requires meeting the needs of future generations who can use foreign languages and master technology. This study investigated the need for specific learning sources or materials for vocational students specifically majoring in Informatics Engineering in vocabulary learning. Since vocabulary is a fundamental language aspect of using English in reciprocal communications, this study is a type of survey research that uses quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques. The instruments used to obtain the data were developed referring to the principal notion of a need assessment proposed by Hutchinson and Waters, validated by a language expert, and served through a questionnaire. The setting of this study involved 48 students of Vocational Students of Informatics Engineering at a private vocational school in Jakarta, Indonesia. The results showed that students of Informatics Engineering at vocational schools must be able to communicate in English, both written and spoken, using the specific term related to their department. Besides studying ESP to work, some students planned to continue to higher education with expertise in linear education. Therefore, they need to learn vocabulary with the integration of technology as they are supposed to deal with it in their field of work in informatics engineering to join the 5.0 society with the advancement of augmented reality-based media. Keywords: Technology, Augmented Reality, Vocabulary, English for Specific Purposes, Vocational School
