Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to explore the social dynamics of Penghayat Kepercayaan followers and elucidate the socio-spiritual transformation of Paguyuban Cahya Sejati in promoting harmony in Cilacap. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations, document analysis, and comprehensive literature reviews. The research findings show: 1) the Penghayat Kepercayaan community in Cilacap experienced a socio-spiritual transformation after receiving official recognition from the state, allowing them more freedom to develop their organization; 2) Paguyuban Cahya Sejati, as part of the MLKI organization in Cilacap, embodies religious moderation through inter-community dialogues, cultural art performances, and participation in community activities. Spiritual teachings such as memayu hayuning sasomo (doing good to others), memayu hayuning bawono (caring for the universe), social character, mutual assistance, and adherence to state regulations represent a sustainable practice of religious moderation. The implications of this research highlight the pivotal role of official recognition in fostering the socio-spiritual development of Penghayat Kepercayaan communities and their constructive contribution to social cohesion. This study enriches our understanding of how formal acknowledgment supports these communities in maintaining religious moderation and positively influencing societal harmony.

Abstract

Abstract Religious moderation is a national program that has been ongoing since Lukman Hakim Syaifudin initiated it. This program is being carried out throughout Indonesia, including on Sabu Island. This island is the outermost island located in East Nusa Tenggara. This study aims to explore the practice of religious moderation among the Sabu tribe. The data for this study was collected through interviews, observations, and a literature review. Research results show that religious moderation among the Sabu tribe has been practised for a very long time. The Sabu community previously mainly consisted of followers of ancestral religions. Then, after the arrival of the Dutch colonisers, there was a conversion of religion. They converted to Christianity, Catholicism, Islam, and Hindu-Buddhism. Although they have changed their religion, their religious rituals are still deeply intertwined with local spirituality (Jingitiu). Similarly, although the followers of Islam are a minority on Sabu Island, practices of harmonious living are evident in daily life. For example, the construction of the An-Nur mosque, the only place of worship for Muslims on the island, received significant support from the Sabu ethnic community during its early development. Similarly, during the Eid al-Adha celebration, the slaughtering of sacrificial animals and the distribution of the meat were also assisted by the non-Muslim community.

Abstract

The relationship between Islam and ancestral religion in the Savu tribe in NTT presents an interesting dynamic to study. Islam, which came later in the 19th century, was able to adapt to the culture of the Savu tribe. This study aims to explore and analyze the relationship between Islam and the ancestral religion of the Savu tribe from the perspective of living Qur'an. This research is a qualitative descriptive study based on field research. Data in this study were obtained through interviews, observations, and literature studies. The results of study indicate that the development of Islam in Savu occurred through marriages between native residents and newcomers from Bugis, Kalimantan, and Java. The newcomers, some of whom were traders in Savu Raijua, spread Islam through economic channels. On this island, there is only one mosque that is the center of Islamic worship and education. The practice of living Qur'an occuring between the Muslim community and the Jingitiu community is through socio-religious activities centered in the Jami An-Nur mosque. For example, during the construction of the mosque, the ancestral religious community transported stones and sand. Similarly, during the Eid al-Adha celebration from year to year, non-Muslim residents of the Savu tribe help Muslims to separate the skin of the sacrificial animal, cut it into meat, and distribute it to residents in the area. This study provides invaluable insight into how the living Qur'an can be used to create social harmony between Islam and ancestral beliefs in a pluralistic and multicultural society such as the Savu tribe. The successful integration of Islamic values into local culture depends on an approach based on tolerance, harmony, and respect for local traditions.
