Abstract

The Qur’an is one of the important aspects in fulfilling the required competencies of Islamic Religious Education (PAI). However, little research on Qur’anic literacy has been done, or has never been published. This study was conducted to determine the level of Qur’anic literacy among junior high school students in East Java province. The study took into account 2,267 students, sampled using multistage random sampling. The study showed that in general, the ability to read, copy, and memorize the Qur’an among junior high school students in East Java is of good standards. This proved that the “santri” culture in the communities of East Java has an influence on the above abilities. However, competency in understanding and translating the Qur’an is still low. In fact, the ability to understand or translate the Qur’an is an important indicator of the success of the students’ Islamic religious education, especially with regards to the Islamic Religious Education curriculum in junior high school. In addition, the study also found that Qur’an education conducted by parents and organized by the community contribute to the students Qur’anic literacy.

Abstract

Teachers of Islamic education in Indonesia have some problems. On the one hand, they are required to meet the standards of qualification, competencies, and certification. On the other hand, they have over-working hour due to the imbalance between the number of the teachers and the students. This fact will undoubtedly affect their work quality. The work quality of the teachers can be measured by five kinds of competences: pedagogic, personality, social, professional, and leadership. This research is aimed to measure the five competences of the teachers of Islamic Education in Senior High Schools and Senior Vocational Schools (both SMA and SMK) in Central Java, and it is also to examine the hypothesis that there is no significant difference in teachers’ competences in terms of their status: civil servants (PNS) or not (non-PNS), and certified or not. By using quantitative approach, the research has two important findings. The first, the competency of the Islamic teachers in Central Java is on the medium level which have a score at 2.95 on a scale of 4.00. The pedagogic competence occupies the highest level with 3.25, in contrast the social competence is on the lowest one with 2.9. The second, there is no significant difference in competences between the teachers who are civil servants and those who are not. On the contrary, there is a significant difference in competences between the teachers who are certified and who are not certified yet.

Abstract

As one of the main subjects in senior high school education, Islamic studies play an important role, even though it is not included in the final exam for third-grade students. Similar to the other teachers, the Islamic studies teacher also has challenges on implementing Islamic education based on the 2013 curriculum. Employing descriptive qualitative method, this research focused on describing what challenges that Islamic studies teachers faced during the implementation of the 2013 curriculum. Data was collected from interview and observation. Data reduction was used as data being analyzed. This research was completed in 2015 and it took place in SMAN 1 Salatiga where the 2013 curriculum has been implemented since 2013/2014 and the implementation was one of the pilot projects of the school. This research finds out that individual differences and the complexity of evaluation standard are the main challenges for the teachers. Individual differences do not only apply to students but also teachers. The complexity of evaluation standard is also significant to challenge the teachers on implementing Islamic education based on a whole 2013 curriculum.

Some manuscript researcher of ex-Office of Religious Research and Development Ministry of Religious Affairs have started to make and maintain an online repository about religious manuscripts since 2019. The plentiful manuscript data, which is resulted from research, contain philological description aspect and digital photo file needs to be followed up more than just a research report or catalogue. It also needs to be easily accessible by other scholar and researcher in an open access repository. This online repository, managed by the researcher team, contain almost 450 religious manuscripts from Madura. The other data that will be uploaded are Islamic manuscript found in Bali, manuscript by K.H. Ahmad Rifa’i Kalisalak, Syaikh Mahfudz Termas, and also from K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari. Using descriptive qualitative method, this paper aims to answer and introduce to three aspects, namely: a) the importance of providing an open access of religious manuscript using online repository; b) the content and general description of religious manuscript online repository; and c) the guidelines on how to access and download the manuscript from online repository.

Abstract

Abstract All religions have a concept of tolerance that applies to both fellow religions and different religions. The Ministry of Religious Affairs proclaimed 2022 as the year of tolerance, which its indicator is religious moderation. The attitude and understanding of religious moderation of religious counselors, religious teachers, and madrasa teachers have not been measured systematically before. This article uses a survey method to measure attitudes and understanding of religious moderation among religious counselors and teachers. About 324 religious counselors and 445 religious studies and madrasa teachers were chosen as the sample using proportional random sampling. The findings show that religious moderation attitude of religious counselors and teachers are in the high category, with an average score of 3.62 and 3.52 (scale 4) respectively. Their understanding of religious moderation has an average score of 0.67 and 0.65 (scale 0-1), which are also classified in high and moderate level. However, the tolerance aspect scored the lowest on both attitude and understanding. Religious tolerance, especially in an interfaith perspective, is still not sufficiently understood by most respondents. Only a few of respondents understand the concept of religious tolerance thoroughly. By comparing the attitudes and understanding of training alumni and nonalumni, implementing religious moderation training has not provided effective results. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the PPMB training system, including its curriculum, method, and implementation because it hasn’t been improving the religious counselors quality optimally.

Abstract

The transformation of digital education in Indonesia has not been seen as a need for future education services towards society 5.0. This study aims to describe, explore and analyze that technology-based education is an urgent new model in organizing the education system. This qualitative study is based on secondary data from literature studies. The research findings are that the integration of digital technology in education is an inevitable reality to build a quality-sustainable education paradigm. This integration is done through the process of transforming educational services from the classroom into a multifaceted digital platform that includes online learning, virtual classrooms, and e-books. This transformation is a consequence of the development of society towards society 5.0; the prevalence of the digital-native generation and global disruptions such as pandemics and environmental crises. Thus, the current social reality requires an adaptive-innovative education system and collaboration among stakeholders. This collaboration ensures the realization of an education system that is aligned with the complexities of the current and future socio-technological landscape, ultimately promoting inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability.

Abstract

This article discussed the lives of the wives of terrorist convicts, including their everyday lives, and the relationship between the wives and their husbands in the terrorist offenders’ families. This theme is important to be examined for the following reasons: Indonesia has experienced a series of bombing actions throughout the country, and the existing studies mainly describe the actors who are mostly men affiliated with radical groups. This article was written based on field research in six places in Indonesia, including Lamongan, Surabaya, Madiun, Bojonegoro (East Java), Surakarta (Central Java), and Yogyakarta. Data were collected using interviews, observations, and documentary studies. The results of this study revealed that the wives of terrorist offenders faced difficulties in their lives, such as economic difficulties as they became the main breadwinners for the family, and they faced stereotyping as the families of terrorist offenders. Furthermore, there were unequal relationships between the wives and the husbands; for instance, most of the wives did not know their husbands' activities related to terrorist actions. This belief is supported by interpretations of Islamic law, which assert that men are leaders with full authority to manage their families and oversee their wives and children.

Abstract

The relationship between Islam and ancestral religion in the Savu tribe in NTT presents an interesting dynamic to study. Islam, which came later in the 19th century, was able to adapt to the culture of the Savu tribe. This study aims to explore and analyze the relationship between Islam and the ancestral religion of the Savu tribe from the perspective of living Qur'an. This research is a qualitative descriptive study based on field research. Data in this study were obtained through interviews, observations, and literature studies. The results of study indicate that the development of Islam in Savu occurred through marriages between native residents and newcomers from Bugis, Kalimantan, and Java. The newcomers, some of whom were traders in Savu Raijua, spread Islam through economic channels. On this island, there is only one mosque that is the center of Islamic worship and education. The practice of living Qur'an occuring between the Muslim community and the Jingitiu community is through socio-religious activities centered in the Jami An-Nur mosque. For example, during the construction of the mosque, the ancestral religious community transported stones and sand. Similarly, during the Eid al-Adha celebration from year to year, non-Muslim residents of the Savu tribe help Muslims to separate the skin of the sacrificial animal, cut it into meat, and distribute it to residents in the area. This study provides invaluable insight into how the living Qur'an can be used to create social harmony between Islam and ancestral beliefs in a pluralistic and multicultural society such as the Savu tribe. The successful integration of Islamic values into local culture depends on an approach based on tolerance, harmony, and respect for local traditions.
