Abstract

Linguistics, as the scientific study of language, provides a fundamental framework for understanding how learners acquire and develop their linguistic competence. However, many students still face difficulties in achieving adequate mastery of language skills, which can hinder their academic performance. This study aims to examine the influence of language learning strategies on students’ linguistic competence. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing a survey design with a sample of undergraduate students from the English Department. The data were collected through a structured questionnaire based on Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) and a linguistic competence test covering phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. The results of regression analysis indicate that language learning strategies have a significant positive effect on students’ linguistic competence, with metacognitive and cognitive strategies showing the strongest influence. These findings suggest that effective use of language learning strategies enhances students’ understanding of linguistic principles and improves their overall performance in linguistics courses. The study highlights the pedagogical implication that lecturers should integrate strategy-based instruction in the classroom to optimize students’ linguistic development.

Abstract

The use of technology in learning has experienced rapid development with the emergence of social media platforms, especially YouTube. YouTube has become one of the rich resources for learning video content, including in learning English as a foreign language. The main objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of using YouTube videos in English language learning. This research utilizes a qualitative approach. The data collection techniques were observation, interview and content analysis. The collected data were then analyzed qualitatively. The results show that the use of YouTube videos in English learning has significant effectiveness. Students who are given English learning using YouTube videos show greater improvement in English skills than students who are given English learning without using YouTube videos. However, the use of YouTube videos should pay attention to the quality of the video, the suitability of the video to the learning needs of students, and the activeness of students in interacting with the video.

Abstract

Changing work models due to the COVID-19 pandemic have accelerated the adoption of hybrid work systems in Southeast Asia. While this model offers flexibility, major challenges arise in maintaining work-family life balance for employees, as well as managing productivity and well-being in diverse cultural contexts. This study aims to identify the challenges faced by HR managers in managing hybrid work systems in Southeast Asia, and evaluate their impact on employees' work-family life balance. This study used a quantitative approach with an explanatory design. Data was collected through a survey of 300 employees working in hybrid work models in six Southeast Asian countries and in-depth interviews with HR managers. The data analysis techniques used were descriptive and regression analysis. The findings show that HR managers in countries with better infrastructure, such as Singapore, are better able to manage the challenges of hybrid working. Countries such as the Philippines and Vietnam face more difficulties related to technological infrastructure and policies that are less supportive of work-life balance. The research suggests that HR managers adopt more flexible policies, improve training for HR managers, and provide technology that supports remote working. Policies tailored to local needs and attention to employee well-being are key to the success of hybrid working models in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Commodity market volatility has been a significant challenge for monetary policy in many countries, including Indonesia. The increase in commodity prices, especially oil and foodstuffs, has the potential to affect inflation and people's purchasing power. This study aims to analyze the impact of commodity market volatility on monetary policy in Indonesia and understand the policy response taken by Bank Indonesia in dealing with these fluctuations. The methods used in this study include multiple regression analysis to measure the relationship between commodity price volatility and inflation, as well as a Vector Autoregression (VAR) model to evaluate the interest rate policy response. The results show that commodity price volatility has a significant positive impact on inflation in Indonesia, with each increase in price volatility contributing to an increase in inflation. In addition, Bank Indonesia needs to respond proactively through interest rate adjustments to maintain economic stability. This research contributes important insights for policymakers on the importance of monitoring global commodity markets and developing diversification strategies to mitigate negative impacts on the domestic economy.

Abstract

The speech delivered by Indonesia’s Minister of Defense and President-elect, Prabowo Subianto, at the 80th United Nations General Assembly on September 23, 2025, in New York, has drawn significant national and international attention for its emphasis on self-reliance, global justice, and nationalistic values. This study aims to reveal the representation of national identity and the underlying political ideology embedded in the speech through Norman Fairclough’s model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The primary data were obtained from the official video recording of the speech released through government media channels, as well as from a verified transcript. The analysis focuses on three main dimensions text, discourse practice, and social practice to identify how language functions as an ideological instrument in constructing Indonesia’s national image within an international forum. The findings indicate that Prabowo employs linguistic strategies that highlight global solidarity while underscoring national sovereignty, reflecting a moderate nationalism intertwined with the discourse of global justice. In conclusion, the speech serves not only as a form of diplomatic communication but also as a symbolic representation of Indonesia’s national identity within the framework of contemporary geopolitics.

Abstract

This qualitative study examines narrative strategies in modern prose literature that represent religious minorities and marginalized believers across diverse geographical and cultural contexts. Analyzing 28 contemporary narratives published between 1980 and 2024, the study investigates how authors utilize focalization, characterization, temporal structures, symbolism, and linguistic strategies to depict minority religious experiences and challenge dominant discourses. The research employs close reading methodologies and thematic analysis to examine texts representing Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and other minority communities across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Findings reveal that narratives predominantly employ internal focalization through minority characters to provide intimate access to religious consciousness while maintaining a critical sociopolitical perspective. Characterization strategies balance humanization through ordinariness with attention to religious particularity, resisting both exoticization and assimilation. Temporal structures favor linear narratives with historical framing that contextualize contemporary persecution, while fragmented, nonlinear approaches formally enact trauma. Rich symbolic systems, including spatial marginality, border liminality, embodiment, and natural world imagery, convey complex dimensions of minority experience. Linguistic strategies such as code-switching and the integration of religious vocabulary mark an authentic minority voice while educating readers. Beyond representing persecution, narratives extensively depict resistance strategies including clandestine religious practice, cultural production, educational transmission, strategic accommodation, and diaspora formation. The research contributes to the concept of "narrative witnessing," positioning literature as a testimonial practice that preserves threatened voices, educates diverse publics, and cultivates cross-cultural empathy. Findings hold significant implications for literary studies, religious studies, intercultural education, and human rights advocacy in addressing contemporary religious polarization.
