Abstract

This study employs a sociological approach to analyze Laut Bercerita, a novel by Leila S. Chudori that explores Indonesia’s socio-political struggles during the 1998 Reformation era. The research examines how the novel reflects systemic political oppression, human rights abuses, and the collective resistance of activists against an authoritarian regime. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study focuses on the experiences of Biru Laut, the central character, whose story highlights the sacrifices made by individuals fighting for democracy, freedom of expression, and justice. Despite facing state-sanctioned violence, including torture and enforced disappearances, the novel illustrates the activists’ persistent struggle against oppression. The findings reveal that Laut Bercerita serves as a medium for social critique, exposing state control mechanisms and their impact on individuals and families of the disappeared. Through its vivid depictions, the novel compels readers to acknowledge the human cost of authoritarian governance. Ultimately, the study emphasizes the role of literature in reflecting societal struggles, fostering historical awareness, and advocating for human rights. By intertwining personal and collective suffering, Laut Bercerita underscores the fragility of freedom and the enduring necessity of resisting authoritarianism

Abstract

The research examines Nadin Amizah's album 'Selamat Ulang Tahun' through an expressive approach to literary criticism, focusing on how the artist's personal experiences and emotions are reflected in her songwriting. Born in 2000 in Bandung, Nadin's background as a child of divorced parents who primarily lived with her grandmother significantly influences her musical narratives. The album, consisting of nine songs including 'Bertaut,' 'Kanyaah,' 'Paman Tua,' 'Kereta Ini Melaju Terlalu Cepat,' 'Beranjak Dewasa,' 'Taruh,' 'Cermin,' 'Mendarah,' and 'Sorak Sorai,' explores themes of maternal love, family dynamics, personal growth, and emotional healing. Through detailed analysis of each song's lyrics, the study reveals how Nadin transforms her intimate experiences into universally resonant stories. The research particularly highlights her masterful use of metaphor and imagery to convey complex emotions, as exemplified in songs like 'Bertaut,' which uses the metaphor of intertwined heartbeats to describe the mother-daughter bond, and 'Cermin,' which employs mirror imagery to explore self-reflection and healing. The study concludes that Nadin's ability to weave her personal narrative into accessible, emotionally powerful lyrics contributes significantly to the album's widespread appeal among Indonesian audiences. This analysis demonstrates how the expressive approach to literary criticism can reveal the deep connections between an artist's lived experiences and their creative output, particularly in contemporary popular music.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between literature and society through a sociological lens, focusing on song lyrics as a medium for social critique. The songs Cerita Rakyat by Fiersa Besari, Jesika by Normatif, and Mosi Tidak Percaya by Efek Rumah Kaca serve as primary case studies to explore how socio-political and cultural contexts influence the narratives within these works. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research explores themes such as social inequality, governance, the impact of digital culture, and the pursuit of social justice. For example, Cerita Rakyat critiques the romanticization of poverty and the neglect of marginalized communities, Jesika highlights the commodification of identity in the digital age, and Mosi Tidak Percaya addresses political disappointments and systemic corruption. The analysis reveals how music acts as a mirror of social realities, amplifying pressing issues that are often ignored in political discourse. The results also show that music is not only a form of artistic expression, but also a powerful tool for building social awareness and inspiring action for social change. By integrating literary analysis with social relevance, this study highlights music's vital role in connecting individuals to contemporary issues and providing a platform for dialogue and introspection. Finally, music emerges as a potential for change, inviting listeners to engage and respond to the social challenges that affect their world

Abstract

This study analyzes the moral values both positive and negative depicted through the characters’ actions in the novel “Pukul Setengah Lima” using a pragmatic literary criticism approach. This approach helps researchers interpret the novel’s messages, allowing readers to clearly understand its moral implications. The study employs a qualitative descriptive analysis method, presenting findings through detailed written descriptions. “Pukul Setengah Lima” is a romance novel by the well-known young writer Rintik Sendu. It narrates the love story of a woman and an adult man while exploring various personal and professional conflicts. The novel conveys both commendable moral values that can be applied in real life and negative moral lessons that serve as warnings for readers. Through character analysis, this study identifies negative moral values such as low self-esteem, dishonesty, domestic violence, and betrayal. Conversely, it highlights positive values, including compassion, resilience in facing life’s challenges, and filial piety toward parents. These values are examined through character dialogues and the author's narrative descriptions. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how literature conveys moral teachings through character interactions and storytelling. Expanding on the pragmatic literary criticism approach with specific examples enhances the clarity of the study’s findings.

Abstract

The study looks at using poetry 5.0 learning with blended language learning (BLL) to boost students' creativity and writing skills. A qualitative approach was taken, using virtual ethnography and classroom research, with data gathered through observations, interviews, and looking at student work. The findings show that BLL-based poetry 5.0 creates a lively and engaging learning space that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and emotional expression. Visual prompts and digital tools, especially Instagram, allowed students to connect personal experiences and get quick feedback from classmates and teachers. This method improved students’ ability to share ideas, think about social issues, and create unique poetry. However, the study encountered some issues like limited face-to-face interaction, which point out areas for teaching improvement. Overall, combining poetry 5.0 with BLL shows promise as a creative teaching method that meets the needs of society 5.0. More research is suggested to look into its use in different educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the psychological depth of Oba Yozo, the protagonist in Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human, through the lens of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. Specifically, it focuses on the concepts of the id, ego, and superego to analyze how these psychological components influence Yozo's behavior, thoughts, and actions throughout the novel. The primary purpose of this research is to understand the underlying psychological dynamics that drive Yozo’s sense of alienation, self-doubt, and his inability to conform to societal expectations. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis approach to examine textual evidence from the novel. Key passages are identified and categorized according to Freud’s model of the psyche, allowing for an in-depth exploration of the protagonist's internal conflict. The findings reveal that Yozo’s behavior is largely driven by the id's impulsive desires and the ego's attempts to mediate between these urges and the moral constraints imposed by the superego. The analysis also demonstrates how Yozo’s inability to achieve balance between these components leads to his profound sense of despair, isolation, and eventual tragic fate. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the psychological complexities of No Longer Human, providing a fresh perspective on the novel’s portrayal of existential struggles and the human condition. By applying Freud’s psychoanalysis, this study sheds light on the ways in which unconscious drives shape literary characters and their interactions with the world around them.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the main character of the novel, Nora, by examining how she describes and reacts to her problems, which are influenced by her mental health, regret, and sadness. The study employs a qualitative descriptive analysis using Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory as a psychological approach to explore the development of the character's psychological state. The data for this research were collected from The Midnight Library by Matt Haig through careful and repeated reading, followed by note-taking of relevant passages. The primary data source consists of quotations from the novel, while secondary sources include theoretical references related to psychology and literature. The researcher analyzes the selected quotations in relation to Freud's theory of literary psychology. The findings reveal three defense mechanisms that significantly affect the protagonist’s personality: displacement, repression, and projection. Additionally, the study identifies three levels of consciousness—id, ego, and superego—experienced by Nora throughout the narrative. Therefore, the research highlights that practicing self-acceptance and confronting personal issues can have a profound impact on one’s life, influencing how individuals respond to challenges, go through daily life, and embrace personal growth. This can ultimately lead to a more meaningful and fulfilling future.

Abstract

In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts, teacher feedback plays a pivotal role in facilitating students' writing development. However, limited longitudinal research has explored how sustained feedback practices influence student improvement over time. This study aims to investigate the impact of teacher feedback on students' writing performance in EFL classrooms, focusing on the progression of writing skills across an academic year. Employing a longitudinal research design, this study followed 60 EFL students from a secondary school in Indonesia over two semesters. Data were collected through students' writing samples, teacher feedback forms, and semi-structured interviews. A mixed-method approach was used: quantitative data were analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA to assess changes in writing scores, while qualitative data from interviews were coded thematically to explore students' perceptions of feedback. Findings indicated a statistically significant improvement in students' writing performance over time, particularly in coherence, vocabulary usage, and grammatical accuracy. Students reported that timely, specific, and formative feedback contributed positively to their writing development. Furthermore, teacher feedback that was dialogic in nature (i.e., allowing for student response and reflection) had a more substantial impact compared to solely corrective feedback.

Abstract

This study uses a Conversation Analysis (CA) framework with a sociopragmatic orientation to investigate how individuals construct, negotiate, and reframe social identities through pragmatic strategies in everyday conversation. Unlike previous studies, which treat identity as a background variable, this research treats it as an emergent, interactional accomplishment. Drawing on naturally occurring conversations from various contexts: peer, familial, romantic, collegial, and institutional, the current study identifies consistent patterns in using pragmatic resources, such as stance-taking, humour, mitigation, epistemic markers, and politeness strategies. The study's unique theoretical contribution lies in articulating three interrelated models: (1) Relational-Pragmatic Identity Construction (RPIC) Theory, which explains how pragmatic strategies constitute identity in context-sensitive relational terms; (2) Contextual Identity Indexicality (CII) Hypothesis, which theorises that pragmatic features act as indexicals that signal fluid, situational identities; and (3) Epistemic Identity Alignment Model (EIAM), which conceptualises identity negotiation as involving shifts in epistemic stance within asymmetrical interactions. Together, these frameworks advance the understanding of identity as a performative and context-dependent process embedded in the micro-sequential structures of conversation. The findings extend existing theories by demonstrating that pragmatic resources function not merely to manage face, but also as primary mechanisms of identity construction across relational contexts
