The class X-Titl 2 was selected as experimental group and the class X-Titl 1 was selected as control group. The experimental group was taught by applying Canva while the control group was taught without applying Canva. The instrument used in this research was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test. After the data were calculated, it was found that tobserved was higher than ttable (3.80 >2.00) with the degree of freedom df =58 at the level of significance α =0.05. It meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was successfully rejected. Thus, applying Canva significantly affects students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether playing bingo has a meaningful impact on vocabulary mastery. Experimental research design was the method used in this study. For the academic year 2023–2024, class X students at MAS Alwasliyah 21 Firdaus were the subjects of this study. There were two X grade classrooms. Every class has twenty pupils in it. Thus, there are 40 pupils in total. Class X-2 was chosen as the control group, and Class X-1 as the experimental group. It is known that the t-test was used for data analysis after the data were computed using SPSS. Following the computation of the data, it is known that, at a significance level of α = 0.05, the t count value (11,374) is greater than the t table value (1,68) with degrees of freedom (df = 38). This suggests that the Null Hypothesis (H0) was successfully rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was successfully accepted. Consequently, the usage of bingo games has a big impact on students' knowledge of the material.

Abstract

This study investigates lexical interference among Mandailing speakers when using English, focusing on the causes and strategies to reduce this interference. The research targets native Mandailing speakers in Gunung Tua Padang Bolak who actively use English. The study aims to identify the factors that lead to lexical interference between Mandailing and English and to explore strategies for reducing it. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through observations and interviews with five students, recommended by local authorities for their active use of English. The study reveals that the dominance of the Mandailing language in daily communication is a significant factor causing lexical interference. Students often blend Mandailing terms into their English speech, which leads to errors in pronunciation, structure, and grammar The findings highlight that this interference is exacerbated by limited exposure to English and the strong cultural ties to the Mandailing language. However, strategies such as language immersion, targeted vocabulary expansion, and increased awareness of language use have been effective in reducing this interference. The research emphasizes the importance of understanding the linguistic and cultural dynamics in bilingual settings to improve English language proficiency among Mandailing speakers.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the needs of vocational high school students in learning English grammar, particularly focusing on tenses, to support the development of microlearning-based instructional videos. Using Hutchinson and Waters’ (1987) needs analysis theory, the research involved 30 eleventh-grade Accounting students from a vocational high school in Medan. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings show that students perceive English tenses; Simple Present, Simple Past, and Present Perfect as essential for academic tasks and workplace communication. However, they experience significant difficulties in understanding these grammar rules due to the lack of engaging, contextual, and accessible learning media. Students expressed a strong preference for short, visually-rich videos with relatable examples that they can access independently. These results suggest that instructional materials should integrate microlearning principles to address students’ necessities, lacks, wants, and learning preferences. The study recommends the design of microlearning videos embedded with project-based and problem-based learning models to support 21st-century skills.
