Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out if Prediction Strategy significantly affected students’ achievement in listening comprehension. The design applied in this research was experimental research design. This research was conducted at SMK Teladan Indrapura Batubara. The population of this research was 70 students from the two parallel classes; X TKJ-1 and X TKJ-2. Random sampling technique was employed in taking the sample and 60 students were chosen as the sample. X TKJ-1 was selected as the experimental group and X TKJ-2 was selected as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using Prediction Strategy while the control group was taught by conventional strategy. The instrument used to collect the data was multiple-choice test consisted of 40 items. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. After the data analysis, it was obtained tobserved value was higher than that of ttable (6.13 > 2.00) with the degree of freedom df = 58 at the level of significance α = 0.05. It meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. In conclusion, Prediction Strategy significantly affected students’ achievement in listening comprehension.

This research was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this study was the tenth grade of SMK Swasta PAB 1 Helvetia which has two parallel classes namely X-Titl 1 and X-Titl 2. Each class consisted of 15 students. So, the total number of population was 30 students. Cluster random sampling with Spin the Wheel Technique was employed in selecting the sample. The class X-Titl 2 was selected as experimental group and the class X-Titl 1 was selected as control group. The experimental group was taught by applying Canva while the control group was taught without applying Canva. The instrument used in this research was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test. After the data were calculated, it was found that tobserved was higher than ttable (3.80 >2.00) with the degree of freedom df =58 at the level of significance α =0.05. It meant that Ha was accepted and Ho was successfully rejected. Thus, applying Canva significantly affects students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

Abstract

Mastering tenses is a fundamental aspect of learning English; however, it remains a challenge for many learners. This Community Service Program that was conducted in the ninth-grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 aims to enhance the understanding and application of tenses through the use of an interactive board game. The method employed is a game-based learning approach, where participants actively engage in activities that encourage contextual comprehension of tenses. The program involves students as the primary participants and is conducted in several stages, including socialization, training, implementation, and evaluation. The results indicate that using a board game not only significantly improves students' understanding of tenses but also increases their motivation and engagement in learning. Thus, this method can serve as an effective alternative for teaching tenses in both formal and non-formal educational settings. Keywords: Tenses, Interactive Media, Board Game, English Learning

Abstract

This study examines the discourse structure and interpersonal meaning in selected dialogues from The Old Man and the Sea, with a focus on moves and speech functions. Using a qualitative descriptive method, it applies Halliday’s moves and speech functions analysis to explore how grammatical forms, interrogatives, declaratives, and imperatives, perform pragmatic and interpersonal functions beyond their literal meanings. The analysis reveals a predominance of ‘k’ type moves or information exchange, including k2, k1, k1f, and k2f, over ‘a’ type moves or offers of service, which appear as a1, a1f, and a1. Declarative clauses are the most frequently used, encompassing structures such as RSQ, S, RRSQ, and AS. The findings highlight dynamic exchanges of knowledge and action, showing how dialogue advances the narrative and develops character relationships. Despite their brevity, Hemingway’s dialogues convey complex meanings, reflecting authentic interaction and his minimalist style. The study underscores the dual function of literary dialogue as a vehicle for both storytelling and social interaction.

Abstract

This study employs a descriptive qualitative method based on discourse analysis to examine the speech functions in French President Emmanuel Macron's victory speech, delivered on May 8, 2017. Guided by Halliday's theory of speech function, the research aimed at exploring how interpersonal meaning is realized through language in this significant political address. Data, consisting of the speech transcript was meticulously analyzed to identify patterns in mood and modality. The findings reveal a predominant use of statements, consistently realized through both full declarative clauses and declarative elliptical clauses. This dominance indicates that Macron's primary communicative purpose was to inform, assert, and establish his stance and intentions, delivering clear propositions and outlining future actions rather than engaging in direct questioning or commanding. The strategic combination of full and elliptical declaratives demonstrates Macron's articulation and his skill in structuring language for clarity and impact, ultimately conveying a resolute vision and fostering trust through declared commitments.

Abstract

This study examines the interaction structure in Final Destination 6: Bloodlines through move analysis, focusing on how dialogue reflects themes of fate and death. Centered on Stefani Reyes, a college student haunted by visions of a 1968 tragedy tied to her grandmother’s ability to prevent disaster, the film explores intergenerational trauma and determinism. Using a qualitative descriptive method and Halliday’s theory, the research identifies initiating, responding, and follow-up moves in character interactions. The findings show a dominance of initiating moves particularly statements and questions which highlight the characters’ struggle with a death curse. Responding and follow-up moves enhance emotional tension and interpersonal dynamics. The study concludes that move structure in the film not only drives communication but also deepens its philosophical exploration of fate versus free will.
