Abstract

This research dealt with the students’ phonemic awareness in mastery English vowels and consonants sounds. The aim was to show activities carried out by the students to pronounce the English vowels and consonants sounds and to read as well as to write the sounds symbol in phonemic transcription. The subject in this research was the second semester students of English Education Study Program of a private university in Medan with total number of 15 students. Descriptive qualitative with observation was designed to implement this research. The subject of this research was observed thoroughly during the learning process. The result showed that the students were aware of phonemic in English sounds. They were able to understand the phonemic concept of English vowels and consonants sounds. They were able to pronounce and differentiate the phonemic transcription of English vowel and consonant sounds.

Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the improvement of English vocabulary mastery among eighth-grade students at Budi Utomo junior high school using the Duolingo application. The research involved 41 students and used descriptive and statistical techniques to analyze data. Qualitative data was collected from interviews, observations, and documentation, while quantitative data was gathered from students' test results, both orientation and post-test. The results showed that students were enthusiastic and active in the learning process, feeling happy and discussing with each other. They easily mastered vocabulary, which influenced their test results. The statistical analysis showed an increase in students' scores from the orientation test to post-test, with a mean score of 48. The number of students achieving the KKM score also increased. In the orientation test, only 4.9% of students achieved the KKM score, but in the post-test cycle I, 87.8% of students achieved it, and in the post-test cycle II, 100% of students achieved or exceeded the KKM score. In conclusion, the Duolingo application significantly assisted students in improving their English vocabulary mastery in a fun and satisfying manner.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether the use of quizizz gave significant effect or not on students’ reading comprehension. The research was designed as a quasi-experimental with quantitative approach. The population of this research was the tenth-grade students of SMK SWASTA PAB 1 Helvetia. The sample was two parallel class namely X-Tbsm 1 which consisted of 30 students as the control class and X-Tbsm 2 which consisted of 30 students as the experimental class. Both classes were given pre-test and post-test. The experimental class was given treatment using Quizizz. Data analysis employed SPSS 29. Pre-test results for the experimental group were 62.67, whereas those for the control group were 60.00. while the experimental class's post-test score was 80.00 and the control classes was 70.33. Calculating the T-test revealed a significant difference. The analysis finding revealed that the sig (2-tailed) value was 0.01< 0.05, indicating that H0 was rejected and Ha was approved. As a result, it was possible to draw the conclusion that Quizizz gave a significant effect on students’ reading comprehension, particularly the descriptive text. Abstract

This research focused and aimed to describe the activities conducted by the students to practice creative writing style integrated with flipped book maker application in writing English short story. Students of English Education Study Program from a private university in Medan was selected purposively as the research participant. There were thirteen students involved as the participants. Illustrative case study which primarily a descriptive study of qualitative approach was designed to conduct this research. Observation was used as the research instrument. The whole activities were observed and noted thoroughly during the classroom interaction and the home assignment. The result of this research showed that the students succeeded to write creatively the English short story. They described and narrated the development of characters, events, and situations in the story. Students also provide and illustrate the story with pictures. As the final result, they converted their short story text into a digital flipped book. By combining digital tools with creative writing style, it can enhance students' engagement, creativity, and overall writing proficiency.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the needs of vocational high school students in learning English grammar, particularly focusing on tenses, to support the development of microlearning-based instructional videos. Using Hutchinson and Waters’ (1987) needs analysis theory, the research involved 30 eleventh-grade Accounting students from a vocational high school in Medan. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. The findings show that students perceive English tenses; Simple Present, Simple Past, and Present Perfect as essential for academic tasks and workplace communication. However, they experience significant difficulties in understanding these grammar rules due to the lack of engaging, contextual, and accessible learning media. Students expressed a strong preference for short, visually-rich videos with relatable examples that they can access independently. These results suggest that instructional materials should integrate microlearning principles to address students’ necessities, lacks, wants, and learning preferences. The study recommends the design of microlearning videos embedded with project-based and problem-based learning models to support 21st-century skills.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh tragedi memilukan yang terjadi di dunia olahraga. Tragedi ini disebut Kanjuruhan yang memakan banyak korban jiwa. Pemberitaan ini tersebar di media sosial salah satunya Instagram orang nomor satu di Indonesia Presiden Joko Widodo, Dasar kajian permasalahan penelitian ini adalah teori ketidaksopanan Culpeper, Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah seleksi, pemfokusan, penyederhanaan, teknik abstraksi dan transformasi. Teknik analisis data menggunakan teknik pemeriksaan analisis isi. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini didasarkan pada 35 komentar yang diposting. Terdapat lima postingan bertema Kanjuruhan dan sepak bola yang diposting di Instagram @Jokowi dan mendapat 37 komentar berisi strategi tidak sopan. Berdasarkan teori dan teknik pengumpulan data, hanya ditemukan 4 strategi ketidaksopanan dalam data: 1) ketidaksopanan botak 3%, 2) ketidaksopanan positif 43%, 3) ketidaksopanan negatif 51% dan 4) kesantunan sarkasme atau mengejek 3%.

Abstract

Penguasaan kosakata siswa di SMK PAB Helvetia 1 masih rendah. Hal ini terlihat dari skor penguasaan kosakata siswa pada penelitian pendahuluan. Ada siswa yang mendapat nilai di bawah 70 sebagai kriteria ketuntasan minimal. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut, peneliti mengimplementasikan aplikasi Quizlet sebagai penunjang pembelajaran. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan aplikasi Quizlet terhadap penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa di SMK PAB 1 Helvetia tahun ajaran 2023/2024. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah desain eksperimen semu. Dalam penelitian ini yang menjadi populasi adalah siswa kelas X (TP 1 dan 2) SMK PAB 1 Helvetia Medan. Sampel penelitian ini adalah dua kelas, terdiri dari 32 siswa pada kelas eksperimen dan 33 siswa pada kelas kontrol. Perlakuan dilakukan dalam 3 kali pertemuan dengan masing-masing kelas berlangsung selama 4 x 45 menit. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan instrumen berupa soal pilihan ganda yang telah diujicobakan sebelum diberikan sebagai instrumen penelitian. Instrumen diberikan pada saat pre-test dan post-test. Setelah memberikan pre-test dan post-test, peneliti menganalisis data menggunakan SPSS untuk menghitung independen sample t-test. Berdasarkan analisis data yang dihitung dengan menggunakan SPSS diperoleh Sig = 0,000 dan a = 0,05. Artinya Ha diterima karena Sig.< a = 0,000< 0,05. Oleh karena itu, terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan aplikasi Quizlet terhadap penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas X di SMK PAB 1 Helvetia.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengenalan dan pemanfaatan penggunaan aplikasi ini bertujuan untuk mengenalkan Haiku Deck sebagai aplikasi presentasi berbasis kecerdasan buatan (AI) bagi mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Sebagaimana diketahui bersama bahwa perkembangan zaman terus bergeser maju dan kecerdasan buatan sangat erat kaitannya dengan kreatifitas mahasiswa dalam belajar dan menyajikan hasil pemikirannya dalam sebuah presentasi.  Haiku Deck merupakan platform inovatif yang memanfaatkan teknologi AI untuk membantu pengguna dalam membuat presentasi yang menarik dan efektif. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan dengan melibatkan mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Metode kegiatan yang digunakan adalah pelatihan berkelompok dimana mahasiswa menyiapkan materi menarik dengan menggunakan aplikasi Haiku Deck Zuru dalam membuat sajian presentasi yang menarik. Hasil kegiatan pengenalan dan pemanfaatan aplikasi ini diharapkan dapat memberikan wawasan tentang efektivitas pemanfaatan aplikasi Haiku Deck sebagai alat bantu presentasi berbasis AI dalam konteks pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Implikasi praktis dari penelitian ini dapat menjadi dasar untuk pengembangan metode pembelajaran yang lebih inovatif dan efisien dalam meningkatkan keterampilan presentasi mahasiswa. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga dapat memberikan kontribusi terhadap literatur penggunaan teknologi AI dalam pendidikan dan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine whether the online film posters as a teaching medium significantly affected students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. This research was conducted using a quasi experimental research with pre-test and post-test design. The population was 60 students of the tenth grade senior high school of MAS Muhammadiyah 13 Sei Rampah, Medan. There were two parallel classes as the population, namely Class X IPA and X IPS. Each class consisted of 30 students. The sample in this research was taken using the cluster sampling technique to decide the experimental and control groups. X IPA was the experimental group and X IPS was the control group. The experimental group consisted of 30 students was taught using online film posters and the control group consisted of 30 students was taught without using any media. There were five meetings during the research. The first and the fifth meetings were administered as pre-test and post-test while the other three meetings were administered as the treatment sessions.The instrument used to collect the data was a writing test. The students of both groups were assigned to write a descriptive text to be administered as the research data. It was obtained that the mean score of experimental group in pre-test was 74.86 and 79.93 in post-test while the mean score of control group in pre-test was 73.66 and 69.9 in post-test respectively. These statistical data were then analyzed using t-test formula. The result of t-test calculation showed the value of t-observed was 3.20 and the value of t-table was 2.00 in level of significance of 0.05 and df=58. This meant that t-observed was higher than t-table (3.20 > 2.00). Based on the finding, then alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null alternative (Ho) was rejected. Thus, it was concluded that online film posters significantly affected students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

Spelling bee game can be considered as a method to teach vocabulary mastery for junior high school using a game. The students not only memorize the words abut also can spell and pronounce them correctly. There are problems faced by the students particularly the seventh grade students of this research location such as the difficulty to understand the form of English words and to pronounce them. The objective of this research was to solve those problems in order to increase the students' mastery of vocabulary by applying spelling bee game. The research method used was a classroom action research by fulfilling planning, acting, observing, and reflecting in each cycle. It was accomplished in two cycles since the determined achievement was not obtained in the first cycle. The subject involved was 35 students of grade seventh. Qualitative data were gathered by administering interview, observation, and questionnaire while quantitative data were obtained from students' vocabulary mean score. The qualitative data analysis from questionnaire showed that there was increasing of positive responses (23.97%) while observation and interview showed that the students were more motivated in engaging the teaching-learning process through spelling bee game. The quantitative data analysis showed that there was increasing on students' vocabulary mastery seen from the increasing of mean score from 25.07% in orientation test to 88.57% in post-test cycle II. There were 31 students in post-test cycle II passed the criteria. Thus, the criteria of success were achieved. It can be concluded that using spelling bee game can be an alternative method to increase the vocabulary mastery in an enjoyable and fun atmosphere.
